Nakamura link rubbished but O'Neill remains tight lipped on Sneijder and Alves

Thursday, 07 June 07, 02:26 AM · Comments (23)

Today, Martin O'Neill is rubbishing the link started yesterday by someone that he was showing an interest in Celtic midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura. I can't find the source of the rumour but I can see it published on the official web site.

The manager is 'fed up with it', so maybe the official site will stop fuelling the fire by publishing these rumours.

Publishing them and having them on the official web site only goes to confirming the link, for some people. Just my opinion

Anyway, back to the rumours, because we can. Martin O'Neill is denying any interest in Shunsuke Nakamura but he's not denying the interest in Bruno Alves, that I think you'll find we were first with last week or Wesley Sneijder.

Spurs are also thought to be showing interest in the Dutch midfielder and are likely to be lodging a bid in the next few days.

Now, just because he's not saying anything it doesn't mean that he's in for them either but when you start denying some rumours and not others it kind of suggests that Celtic have been on the phone and had a conversation with their former manager.

So, Nakamura is off but Alves and Sneijder look like they are both on, which for me would make a good start to the summer. If we hear anything we'll let you know soon. Expect an increased bid for Reo-Coker later today.

I'm glad that by the looks of things villa are going to sign Ro-coker. Tottenham are apparently going in for Sneijder as well, but to be honest i would far rather play for villa. better stadium, trining ground, manager and above all fans. i don't know much about alves.

the totscum thing is probably no more than lazy journalism, how many midfielders do totscum need?

I'm gald we're not in for Nakamura. A couple of Celtic fans I know say he drifts in and out of the game, sometimes you rarely see the guy. Then he'll score from a free kick.
I don't think we need that type of player at the Villa, we don't have the strengh in depth (yet) to carry a player just for his set play capability.

I hate to say it, but if a London club come in for Sneijder I think he'd go. They don;t always look at the clubs capabilities, rather the bright lights of London and all that goes with it. Shame 'cause I think he'd be a real asset.

From what i've seen of Sneijder, I would like to see him in a Villa shirt next season. My concern would be that he may choose Spurs, not because they are more attractive than Villa, but because they have a dutch manager! However, if he is a player MON is in for, then he needs to show him the fabulous new training ground, and share the vision of the club and the obvious direction it is going in. One thing's for sure, if anyone can convince him that Villa is the right place for him, it is MON. It might also be a good idea to remind him that Villa are one of the few english clubs that have won the european cup! :D

Clearly at the moment Spurs have more pull then Villa, so I wouldnt hold any hope of winning that battle, although at least we are going for that calibre of player...... If we were battling Newcastle or West Ham, i would expect victory but Spurs at the moment I doubt we would win

Its just spurs scare stories - they have bigger fish to fry. Sneijder will come with a £12m price tag and Jol needs (er, wants - doesnt need) to buy a striker [Bent @ £14m], a desperate need for a left winger having missed out on Nani and another defender, especially if Chimbonda goes. They already have Lennon, Huddlestone, Zakora, Jenas, Malbranque, Tainio and Ghaly (ok, he may be off) so they are not short of Talent in the middle.

Good that Nakamura isn't coming. Journalists were even reporting we were only signing to tap into the Asian market. Such as Man Utd. did with Park Ji-Sung.
Apparently Porto don't want to sell Alves after losing Anderson to United.

Spurs are in a good position to beat us to players at the moment, although our vision is top class. Although Spurs have serially under-achieved, although if they get players like Sneijder they probably won't for much longer.

That's a good reason why we need to be getting players like Sneijder. Might be good to try and break the bank and the wage structure in order to sign players of their calibre.

Don't underestimate the pull of MON, the new training facilities and genral feel around the place. I should imagine that most players will want to go somewhere where they beleive they will be part of a club with ambition and a setup that is most likely to acheive success. Current table position doesn't necessarily do it and, if I'm not mistaken, Ajax are in the champions league next season so if europe is his dream then he would probably stay there or move to another club who are in the champions league. Come on Sneijder you'll be welcomed with open arms.

Spurs are turning into the new Chelsea in terms of them not being able to come up with their own ideas when it comes to transfers. Chelsea did it with Utd. Utd wanted to sign Cech, Robben, Essien and Drogba before Chelsea copied them and signed all four players. Now its happening with Spurs they copied Utd with their pursuit of Nani but unsuccessful and now they want to scupper our attempts to sign Sneijder. This is something that really annoys me but I suppose that we have to accept that it part and parcel of football. With have been chasing the guy all summer but may not get him because Spurs have entered the race at the last minute. We all fear that we might lose out to Spurs but there are many factors that might actually persuade Sneijder to choose Villa over Spurs. Ghosthunter made a good point that we have a better manager, stadium, training facilities and most importantly fans than they do plus our owner/chairman is in a different league to there's.They may have European football this year but they certainly wont have it the following season when we pinch their spot so in the long run it may be a better move for Sneijder if he moves to Villa. Hopefully the imminent signing of Reo-Coker will persuade the young Dutchman to relocate to Brum and with a few more additions such as D Bent, Boruc, Curtis Davies, McShane and Matt Taylor he could be tasting immediate success with us.

First of all hello everyone that posts hear. I have been reading this site for a few weeks and i think its quality, but this is my first post. I think Sneider is ace and the thought of him playing next season especially with Reo-Coker, Carew, Barry, young and co. I still have a feeling in my bones that Mr Owen will be showing his face at VP soon especially now they have sined Viduka and with rumours about Anelka etc.

(Someone mentioned they had a picture of the new kit earlier were can i see it i've been searching for it all night and can only find the one that was posted on this site the other week.)

Apparently Spurs are winning the race to sign Sneijder. every time villa go to sign a player, other teams come and snatch them from us. its as if other teams are afraid that we'll become a super team. Spurs are villa's new rivals not the middelsborough's and man city's. basically we need to spend big to compete with our rivals looking to break the top four. villa already have the advantage because we are bigger club than the likes of newcastle, tottenham and everton.

Nick 123 are you insane or just deluded? far rather play for Villa? far rather live in London, play with Berbs and Keane and european football. "to be honest" preceding the most ludicrous statement ive read in YEARS hahahaha. Frank Arnesen had a real long look at Sneijder 2 years ago incidentally Jimmy D. if Villa want to get in Spurs' position, nevermind the top 4 then major rebuilding will have to be done (like when we signed a boat load of young English talent on the cheap)Ashley Youngs a real gem but was more than Robbo, Lennon and Carrick combined! Villa are a side I have a lot of time for, especially now they have O'Neill, but some of whats being written on here is crazy.
