New badge and new shirt, what do you think now?

Wednesday, 09 May 07, 02:55 AM · Comments (106)

This is either going to get me a lot of stick or a surprisingly large number of people agreeing with me. I suspect it will be the first, only because Aston Villa fans love the banter.

The new Aston Villa badge was released last week and it came in for quite a bit of stick, pretty much on every forum and in every pub on Wednesday night.

The thing is it's not going to change and despite the majority of people not wanting AVFC on the badge it's staying. Most would actually have Aston Villa and not surprisingly a fair chunk will have AVFC; but with the level of acceptance increasing, quite literally as each day goes by, that's hardly surprising.

They could have made the badge yellow and triangular and it would have been accepted eventually because that's what was always going to happen with the new badge.

I personally don't like the AVFC or the star and I've made it clear why not, but the club are sticking with what they've got and by golly, I don't really care. We all make mistakes and I personally think this is a huge marketing error mistake, but they've got to learn; after all they are new to football and Aston Villa.

I think it's a mistake mainly for not listening to the majority and judging by the forums it's is the majority that would prefer to see Aston Villa in the badge somewhere. Let's not forget though if you take away all the spin and the bluster it's one man that owns the club and one man that can do whatever he likes; regardless of how it is fleshed out.

So, to the questions we sent in to Phil Mepham. We've still not got answers; are you surprised?

Anyway, we're stuck with it now and all we've got to look forward to is the new shirt. The new shirt is by Nike and simply for that reason I suspect we're going to see record sales and from what we're told it will be released just in time for the US tour, although we'll get that confirmed by Richard FitzGerald soon.

To the new shirt and the new design. We've had a few sent in but the one we like best is below; what do you think? Again, let us know below or try and find the forum which is live on the site. to registered visitors and might one day be launched.

NO no no!

Great work on the design for the most part, but the badge should be over the left, erm, breast, or want of a better word. Never looks as good in the middle.

What a lovely Jersey by nike. I wonder if 32 Red will remain our sponsors next season. Wasn't there talk of it being cancelled.
I would prefer a sponsor such as Singapore Airlines/ Coca-Cola/ Pepsi Cola/ SoYah!

Its quite a nice design but itt doesnt look like an Aston Villa shirt, it looks like Scunthorpes!!! we should stick to Claret body Blue Sleeves and none of that horrible piping

Both the badge and the Nike tick should be over on the left. The badge is looking good, kind of got a Eurpoean feel about it IMO.

Steve B Wrote: | 15.33BST | May 9, 2007

I have to admit, I like all of it. Yeah, the badge maybe should be on the left, but I prefer it what we have had of late. I hope Nike and the Villa board see it.
Having seen the badge on this shirt, it has kinda grown on me now. Not the best design, but as many have said, you can't please evryone, and the club will always do what they want. As long as MO'N gets cash, top quality players and we do push for Europe, who will complain?! :D

I have no problem with the new badge, but I think it would look most effective on a very simple claret shirt with blue sleeves and a round neck. I too thought Fitzgerald has said that he felt 32Red an inappropriate sponsor for Villa.

Damian
Damian Wrote: | 18.58BST | May 9, 2007

At Andrew6

Completely agree and I did question buying this seasons shirt for my son, but seeing as he is only three years old I went ahead anyway, but I understand your sentiments ... it's almost as if the club are endorsing gambling.

However, the deal is only for one more season and I think the new board will have a little more sense and probably own't do something like this again ...

Hi Damian,

Thanks for that....I'm glad its not just me being fussy. My kids are 6,8,10 and 12 and all Villa Mad.Theyve had to stick to the training tops this year...I like all the emphasis on our tradition(unlike Small Heath etc)..lets rememeber then that AVFC was originally a Church team....GET RID OF THE GAMBLING SPONSOR...please!!

DD
DD Wrote: | 19.33BST | May 9, 2007

I like it - but maybe without the white piping?

The badge looks good, and looks just fine central, the 32 red logo is a definite improvement, the current one is one of the worst/ugliest in the prem.

Naj114
Naj114 Wrote: | 19.40BST | May 9, 2007

Hi guys,

I did the above shirt design. Just goofing around on Photohop. Really excited about Villa's future and that we now have Nike onboard. I centered it the badge after looking at the 82' top. The 32 Red logo is the new one on their website, though not sure if it will be adopted for Villa's kit..? I too think it is bad to have a gambling sponser, especially for kids.

If you guys have any suggestions on how i can alter the design, fell free. ;)

YokohamaVila
YokohamaVila Wrote: | 19.41BST | May 9, 2007

It looks OK, but here's an interesting point. Online gambling is illegal in most states in The US so will the club have to remove it from the shirts when they tour this summer? I'm sure the chairman has considered this.

Nick123
Nick123 Wrote: | 20.57BST | May 9, 2007

The shirt is really cool. the only thing i would change to it is that the blue bit on the sleeve to be scrapped and make it claret, and make the white coller and cuffs blue. that different 32red logo should of been on the old kit. the whole thing is really eye catching and it would definatley sell well. the new badge works with the kit really well. this would be a serious conteder if i was to choose the new kit!

KenVillan
KenVillan Wrote: | 21.08BST | May 9, 2007

You can please some of the people all of the time, or all of the people some of the time, a very fitting statement for the new badge, I'm pleased all of the time with the new design, perhaps I'm easily pleased.

That shirt is a nice design, if it's anything like that, I'll be pleased again, but whatever it looks like, I'll be buying it.

This badge debate is becoming way too serious now, and we've had a good debate, it's done and dusted, so let's get on with looking to the future, the bright future, I'm sure we'll all be pleased with that ;)

If the new villa kit actually turns out to be like this design I will be relatively pleased. Finally like the new crest and I'm pleased to see a v-neck rather than collar. However our shirt is badly let down by the presence of 32 red, it has to go as it is unattractive and sends out the wrong message- we are a family club!

I was possibly more excited than most upon learning Villa's new kits were to be made by Nike, as I am a massive AVFC supporter living in Hamilton Ontario Canada. As such, certain clubs' merchandise, such as Villa's, can be hard to come by. Having the Nike swoosh on the chest will guarantee all future kits far easier to find in local shops. That aside, on to my real point. While I do enjoy the 'possible' new shirt displayed above, I would much rather see them use a look similar to what I've attempted to put together here: (LINK) My apologies for the lack of quality in the image, however I was forced to use Microsoft Paint to create the conceopt (I no longer have a properly functioning PC with a Photoshop program on it). I will quit my rambling now and leave with the hopes of other Villans out there enjoying the ideas behind what I've done. Comments anyone?
