New contracts in the offing for Young and Gabby

Tuesday, 17 June 08, 06:23 AM · Comments (21)

With silly season well and truly in full swing and anticipation levels reaching fever pitch, it's understandable that we're all looking at who is possibly coming in and maybe not taking much interest in the players currently sunning themselves on the beach, who currently play for Aston Villa.

However, it's believed that at least two of the players that made an impact last season are more than keen to tie themselves down to the club for a little longer, with an eye or two on contract extensions.

Gabby Agbonlahor and Ashley Young, a little bird tells me, would both like new contracts and basically both players believe they should be getting paid more, in light of the impact both have made.

Both of the them have contracts until 2011 but recent comments from Martin O'Neill have prompted the players, or should that be players agents, to seek extensions and probably quite a nice weekly pay rise.

Now, we're all aware that a contract isn't really worth that much these days apart from to the player, but we're also aware that in the modern game it's as much about keeping the players happy - especially if they believe they can earn more elsewhere.

Now, this is as much speculation as opinion, but I'd hazard a guess that Martin O'Neill is a little gutted about Barry wanting to leave and that he'll probably be doing everything in his power to keep these two happy - after all, both are on the fringes of the England squad so it's natural for them to be paid at the same level as others they're now mixing with.

So, it is a rumour and a bit of opinion from me, but don't be surprised to see hew contracts in the very near future for these two. It will be pitched as a reward but it's more about keeping them happy and committed, as both have instigated it.

Get Ashey Signed up for as long as possible, i feel gabby has not proved himself yet, last season he didnt perform and he missed lots of sitters, but i still feel we need to spend big this summer get the cheque book out' Lerner", he really is one

young is prob more worthy of a pay rise but if we are to hav the ambition, unfortunatley higher wage demands is part an parcel of this. i think the current lot may monitor the barry transfer saga an see wot leverage they can get wit a new deal

Gabby works hard and creats space for others. Gabby deserves a lot more credit despite his sometimes bad attitude

sign them up before liverpool get gareth to try gerrards dirty tricks and saying hed love to pla with them at liverpool. I think the FA/FIFA should do more so a contract is alot more strict. as at the moment as you said the only person its worth anything to is the player and his agent

I'd sign them up with as long as you can .... pay them some good money and make sure you've got a crazy buy out on each player liek they do in Spain. Looking at the way things go these days - I'd make sure no player that's got a future is aload to go into last or last two years of contract

Ashley Young deserves all the plaudits he is getting and we should reqad him accordingly - Gabby on the other hand is just fast - once his pace starts to dissapear he will be found out!!

its simple play well for one season get a bit, play well the following season get a bit more, dangle that carrot in front of all the players at villa park and as long as your fair and do what you say your going to do as a manager every one will be happy.

MON will need to start gritting his teeth and preparing to spend some of Randy's money soon. If as i suspect he tries to keep wages and purchase costs in the 'peanuts' league we'll end up going down the pan like Leicester did just before he bailed out and like the Celtic did after he made his excuses and left (only to be rescued by the great Gordon Strachen). Come on martin it's not youre money relax, spend Randy's money and prove to us all that you really are as good a manager as the media portray you as and actually win something of meaning and not the odd Mickey Mouse Cup.

The thought of playing City and the Scousers so early is a worrying prospect already. They are both clubs who spent big last year and look like they will be doing the same again. We on the other hand have a manager who to me doeas not seem to want to push on and compete with these clubs. He's selling the family jewels and then shoppiong in Aldi for replacements. We can only hope that at some point he at least starts to buy as many players as he lets go. Come on Martin stop being such a chump and talk to Randy. Alternativley Randy should tell MON to get ambitious or get out the door.
