New French keeper on the way?

Friday, 06 July 07, 11:19 AM · Comments (73)

According to the official website for Le Havre, Aston Villa are about to sign goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, or to be more precise that he'll be coming over next week.

Le Harve currently play football in Ligue 2 in France and Mandanda also represents the French at U21 level. The indications are becoming very clear that Martin O'Neill is building for the future and not just bringing in players to do the job for a season or two.

This isn't speculation, it's the real thing according to the official website of Le Harve. While he doesn't occupy the number one shirt you've got to have some ability to represent your country at any level.

Current Aston Villa keeper Thomas Sorensen, despite rumours that he may be on his way to Spain, is still convinced he is the number one for Villa so this may come as a shock to him.

Never heard of him but he's good enough for me. Now, that's faith for you.

Jusst read this on the UEFA under 21 website:
Born in Kinshasa in DR Congo, Mandanda joined the Le Havre academy in 2000 and, having worked his way through the club's youth teams, became a regular for the Ligue 2 team this season. A brave and agile goalkeeper, Mandanda has won eight caps for the U21s, although only one of those came in qualifying – a 2-0 win against Cyprus in the final Group 4 fixture – as Jérémy Gavanon made the No1 spot his own. He remains highly thought of, with France's goalkeeping coach Franck Raviot saying: "He always looks to be as efficient as possible."

Sounds good, in fact the words 'canny bastard' spring to mind.

What does everyone else think?

He must be good if MON is buying him, he is very highly regarded in France and a hot prospect who is being chased by many top foreign clubs and EPL clubs- so thats good ;D :)

You may find he'll be the reserve keeper with a more expeirienced player coming aswell. I feel Sorensan and Taylor may be playing football else where next season

Looks like MON is building for the future which sounds good to me. I still think Sorenson can still do a good job for us and maybe with a bit of pressure from these up and coming youngsters he might start to perform better a bit more often. Sorenson on his day i believe can perform as good as any goal keeper in the premiership.

My question is do you think we have sold all let go all of the players that are going now? Or if not who do you think will go or who do you want to leave? I would like to say goodbye to Djemba-Djemba, Sorenson, and Delaney.

I dont think he will be our number 1 next season, i hope not anyway, sorenson must be better. I think though that he will be backup with 2 keepers coming in and tommy and taylor both going out!

I like the sound of getting this young keeper but haven't been able to find any footage of him at the moment to have a look. Like someone else said, trust MON and he must be good if he is so highly rated in France and indeed U21 international.
Incidentally, there is a compilation of Craig Gordon (my personal first choice)somewhere on you tube and I must say that he looks very good...some great saves on the footage.
The main reason for my post though is John Utaka. I put a post on here a few days ago when i saw the rumour of him coming to Villa for £9.5m on football rumours.com. Nobody really commented at the time apart from one or two "never heard of hims" and doubts about that particular website's content.
I notice now though that quite a few poeple mention him as a desirable target. Also a few of you reckon that if we are to buy another striker, we should be looking at someone similar to Carew rather than a nippy little fella like Bellamy (and those we already have).
Take a look at the following link and although £9.5m is a lot of dough, he's another young talented international and would surely be a hit at VP.

to AV33, I used John Utaka as a possible signing i would like to come to VP earlier, and that was because i watched the footage on you tube after you had mentioned him the other day. I had'nt heard of him but was really impressed with his pace, power and finishing. I also had heard that Portsmouth were interested and Harry Redknapp was singing his praises, so i hope the rumour you have seen has some truth in it.

As for unknown keepers, i had'nt heard of Peter Schmiecal untill after he had signed for Manure and it was'nt long before we all knew who he was.

This story is now on the villa website. However, although the headline claims that MON has confirmed that he will be coming for a week's trial, the article itself confuses me. I find this bit particularly confusing:

"Some reports have suggested the O'Neill told www.avfc.co.uk: "He'll come in for a couple of days so we can have a look at him and we'll see what happens after that."

They don't actually say whether MON actually told avfc.co.uk anything, just that "Some reports have suggested" it.

Whether its true or not, the website is not doing a very good job of reporting Villa-related news at the moment.

AV33 Wrote: | 00.34BST | Jul 7, 2007

I agree with you Martin O Neill_New villa that Scott Carson is a good young keeper but remember the penalties at the u21 tournament? He didn't get anywhere near them.
One of the things that got me on side with the Craig Gordon video was his double save from the penalty spot about half way through...quality.
Why is nobody posting tonight? Thought I might get a few comments on the Utaka thing. I know it's a keeper thread at the moment but just thought it needed mentioning because having two Carews in the squad would be great and this kid looks really strong.

I've just watched the Utaka thing on youtube and whilst he looks ok, how short are our memories, buying players on the strength of video footage, bosko balaban anyone? Now having lived in France for 18 months and watching quite a bit of football over there, trust me the french league is not as good as people think it is, at the time cisse was a god over there and we all saw the impact he had in the prem.

Although I will now recommend a player you saw a bit of and his name is kim kallstrom, for those who haven't heard of him he's a left footed midfielder and yes I know we already have young and barry but I honestly believe we could pick him up very cheaply and he could help ashley young so much. If you need proof check this out LINK

A young side, built for the future. This season could be the one where so many teams are pressing so-called eatablishment (top 4) that it's actually wide open. Alot of teams will be taking points off the top of the table. I expect to see a good scrap for the Euro places, with MON bringing in youngsters who can also deliver the goods now I expect us to be right in that fight.
The football-rumours.com site now has the suggestion that we are to announce Wesley S & Lahm early next week. This week's press conference for NRC was apparently delayed in the hope that the above would also be confirmed then. Here's hoping. God! I can't wait!!

Collymore? Ginola? Baros? the list goes on Sh*t lot of good they did us? look how much chelsea spent on Shevchenko? we'll build and build and eventually we'll be big enough to attract some big names and even then MON will spend wisely have faith in him !

So yes we do have to build and be careful about who we buy but we also do need to invest now just to keep up with these teams.

the france goalie has only played 1 full season in france league 2 so if i was o neill i would buy him and loan him out 2 a championship team all season.the reason for this would be that id keep sorenson until his contract runs out because we are not going to get much for him and sign another goalkeeper so next summer when sorenson leaves the french kid will be ready to challange for first choice having had a season of first team football in england

this is only my suggestion im sure some will disagree

Who gives a damn whether we fans have heard of him or not. O'Neill employs and manages a capable and driven scouting team who have apparently been asked to forget their families and hobbies and give their 100% energy to rooting out the best young players in Europe. If this guy is one of them, so be it. I think a little more faith in our management is required...

If you got to 32 Red's website, they have a different emblem from the one on last season's jerseys. This could be used on the new Villa shirt? Only a cosmetic issue but would be good to have a nice looking jersey again. The old Asics/Muller one can only endure so much!
As for on the field, id love to see SWP and a good striker(defoe would be great). Someone on another board made the point that we brought in three attacking players in januray- maloney, carew young and so we should concentrate on the back. I agree we really need to strenghten the backline but we couldnt finish teams off last season so we need the firepower now more than ever. I think the likes of Agbonlahor and Maloney are good squad players but not good enough to make a significant difference over a season. SWP on the right and Ashley Young on the left could certainly make a difference. Think defoe could be a solid buy. I thought bellmay would have been good too.
Just had a look at Villa-Inter Milan penalties from 1994 on youtube. Phil King, what a hero! Up The Villa, hopefully good times are on the way to us.

My final word on this matter Martin O Neill_New villa is that yes it did come across a bit like you were moaning and no i'm actually not one of those fans that is always moaning, in fact I know i'm new on here but see if theres anywhere that i have moaned about anything. I've been there in the shit times in 2nd division as it was called then going to nearly all the games, but thats that really none of us need to say oh I was there when this or that was happening.

I think the point that i was trying to make and obviously not very well is that we all have different opinions and its good sometimes to air them, especially if you are frustrated for whatever reason, but at the end of the day we are all villa fans who have the best interests of the club at heart and we all want them to go forward and win things, but realistically this aint going to happen overnight.

Anyway UP THE VILLA!!!!

Just had a look over today's rumours and news concerning players linked with Villa. I thought I'd put my findings on here to discuss as there are some interesting things about today.
Ryan Babel's agent has said that Liverpool have made a £10m bid but haven't spoken to the player yet...looks like that could be the end of that one then !
WBA have accepted a £5.3m bid from Wigan for Jason Koumas and Preston excused David Nugent from training today so that he could resume talks with Pompey.
Malouda is having his medical at Chelsea today and should be joining the team's U.S tour in a few days. Could this pave the way for the release of SWP to Villa?
Tribal football say that MON is interested in bringing Ziad Jaziri to the club from French side Troyes. He is a 29 year old Tunisian striker who scored and also got sent off in the last World Cup !
There is more talk of Luke Young becoming our new right back and plenty about a 16 year old called Harry Forrester from Watford. Harry is an attacking midfielder and apparently very hot property for the future. Watford fans are said to be gutted at the thought of losing another major talent from the youth set up, like they lost Chris Eagles To ManUre and Ashley Young to us !
One report just 15 mins old from News Now is that Brede Hangeland wants to join his Norwegian International team mate John Carew at AV. Brede is a centre back, currently at FC Copenhagen and is available for £3m.
Hope this gives everyone something to ponder and I look forward to reading any posts concerning this.
I don't know how true any of the rumours are, I'm just passing on what I've read today in an effort to get some conversations going on here.
My personal thoughts, for what they are worth (!) are that part of me is pleased that Nugent and Koumas look to be plying their trade away from VP next season. I just think that we should be aiming a bit higher in order to get to where we want to be(ie. Babel, Wesley etc) if indeed this is possible at present.
I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts.

True true jammer we all villa fans stick togther thru and thru in the good the bad and the ugly :P anyways just been reading that we mite be going for luke young again this rumour came out about 2months ago aswell but has came out again today so im not sure how true it is heres the story about it anyway... Aston Villa are said to be closing in on a swoop for Charton right-back Luke Young ahead of the new season.
Villa boss Martin O'Neill got the transfer ball rolling last week when he signed Nigel Reo-Coker from West Ham United for £8.5million and now he is turning his attentions to other targets.
O'Neill is keen to sign a new right-back and has been keeping tabs on Young for some time. The player looks set to quit The Valley for a return to the Premiership and Villa are said to be favourites to wrap up a deal.

Addicks boss Alan Pardew has already lost Darren Bent to Tottenham and although he will do all he can to keep hold of Young, chances are he will have to let him go if a big offer comes in.

Villa still have plenty of cash to spend and are ready to make an offer for Young after Phil Bardsley returned to Manchester United following his loan spell last season.

Here's another one for you regarding the new kit. I spent ages last night reading a massive thread on VillaTalk where I believe it all came from. I thought i'd tell you how I interpreted it all after reading hundreds of comments:
Apparently the new home kit is being stored at a warehouse at Hams Hall near Coleshill. After Nose employees had kicked and spat at one of the shirts, an employee took a photo of it draped across a palette and sent it to the blogger (i won't put his name).
The blogger posted the photo on the site and while some people immediately believed it to be the real thing, others slated the guy big time...even calling him a prick ! They said that it was a photoshop job and hundreds of comments followed. Their main arguements were the collar looking different to the "teaser pic" on the OS and the graininess of the image around the badges and sponsor. I must admit I thought the same of that first image.
From the look of it, the blogger then spent most of the day trying to explain that he had nothing to gain by mugging everyone off,etc and his reputation should be trusted. He admitted that the pic was poor quality and said he would try to get another pic as one or two other employees had taken pics on their phones which may have been of better quality.
Soon after (not long enough to perform a Photoshop masterpiece), he put a second pic on the site which was much more convincing. This seemed to silence most of the doubters and most people seemed happy that this was the real top.
I must admit that the blogger was very convincing regarding the authenticity of the source and didn't waver all day. People then started to apologise for doubting him etc.
Apparently, this second image is the one that News Now took up and when the General was asked about it, he didn't deny that the top had been leaked. I don't know what to believe but I can tell you that the second image posted (with the creases on the body) is the one people should judge.
Just wanted to know what you guys think. If I knew how to post the image here, I would because I downloaded it for my desktop. Look forward to your comments...

I kind of understand where you're coming from regarding fakes but in order to copy something, you first need a design.
Hope you don't mind me saying friend, but you've been real negative the last few days. Are you on the blob? No offence ! lol

Going back to the luke young thing, I for 1 wouldn't mind us signing him, I know he's not goingto set the world on fire but he does have experience of the prem and is a very steady player which is exactly what you need at the back. Along with this I like to see MON bringing in a young right back as cover gradually bringing them through and giving them experience over time. Been trying to think of a youngster for this role, heard good things about onuoha from man city, any other ideas??

Yeh jammer he is a good player onuoha. glen johnson is one id like to see he would get on well with the lads there also lauren who i think we would have a chance with maybe as pompey got quite a lot of defenders but i dont think he would be M.O.N sort of player

Glen johnson would be a bit of a risk, but he is still young and with something to prove and probably the type of player who would respond to MON, not a bad shout.

Hope I got the type right for your name this time...soz mate.
Thanks for your reply old boy, I think it might be your wording but one or two of your posts appeared a bit negative and i think Jammer had a bit of a pop at you a few days ago about t.
I know you don't mean any harm and it seems to me that you're just as eager as the rest of us for something to happen and theres no crime in that.
Just thought you were being a bit doom and gloom unnecessarily and I apologise to you if you think i'm out of order by noting it.
Best of luck friend...no hard feelings eh ! Hopefully we'll all be creaming our pants soon with some news.
I'm gonna put some you tube links on shortly, for you all to have a butchers !

Forget it guys. As each day goes by you miss out on another player. This hope you seem to have that a few players will arrive at once in nonsense. You even think the likes of Sneijder and Drenthe would sign for you without European football. The squad you have now will be fighting relegation and thats a fact. A few injuries and you're F****d. Man City and West Ham are now ready to spend big and can offer a lot more than Villa as can the clubs in Europe you're fighting for the left overs with Wigan, Derby etc. Your decline in the last ten years will be complete when you go down this year.

Well most of the talk in the last few days has been about SWP, who i think is a good player but we can do better. I was thinking of Rafael van der Vaart, Hamburg have had a poor season no european football for them next season. He can play anywhere in midfield, and i bet his wages wouldnt be as high as SWP...

Nice one lads, keep it coming !
Heres the You Tube links that I talked about earlier.
Nice one Martin O Neill_New villa, I'm you're greatest fan now you've calmed down a bit ! Lol
My two bob's worth first on what i've seen if you please... !
Couldn't find anything on Brede Hangeland, mainly because he's a centre half and I'm yet to come across a "top ten best defensive headers from all over the planet" compilation on You Tube !
Also the French U21 keeper seems to be shy of the telly considering he's so feckin good ! (not negative MON_NV)
By the way, could that be your new name to save on button pressing ? (Hope you know what i mean mate...keep getting the underscore in the wrong place !)
There's some stuff on Wesley Sneidjer, Craig Gordon, Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Phillip Lahm and Ryan Babel.
All I could find on Ziad Jaziri was a goal he scored for Tunisia v Suadi Arabia in (i think) the last World Cup. Also, a video where he nutmegs J J Okocha in spectacular style but you cant judge him on 30 seconds of video ! I can vaguely remember him catching my attention (from the world cup) but thought we'd be in for better.
I watched the Craig Gordon video again and I'm convinced this bloke will be a world star...go get him MON! (check the reaction stuff, penalty save etc.)
Finally, i know a lot of the Ryan Babel footage shows him attacking from the left but apparently he is naturally right footed and can play striker as well...hi jack Rafa NOW !! Some say he's the next Tierry Henry !

I posted the links i said i would a while ago now but unfortunately wasn't logged in at the time and post was sent to admin etc. I'm logged in now but haven't got the info at present to re-type it all again. I'll have to wait until admin puts it on.
Is that the problem with the frequency of the posts? Are the organisers of the site on holiday?
