News Friday: Odense, Younes Kaboul, a Czech youngster and bids rejected from Blackburn

Friday, 18 July 08, 07:36 AM · Comments (39)

It's been a bit more lively than yesterday with a few bits of news.

Craig Gardner is fit for tomorrow's trip to Odense and MON has taken Elliot Parish, Nathan Baker, Zoltan Stieber, Marc Albrighton and Nathan Delfouneso with him to bulk out the paper-thin squad we've got.

Rumours today: Younes Kaboul and Marek Suchy. Having been linked with over a hundred players I think the media are finally finding it difficult to actually find someone new to link us with.

Younes Kaboul has only been mentioned on a Spurs fansite so I'm not sure if there's much or any truth in this. We're after full-backs but the Frenchman's versatility of playing in defence and midfield might make him a good squad player. I'm not sure on his attitude though and he's upset a few Spurs fans with Barry-esque comments in the past. I'd be keen to know what Spurs fans think of him.

Marek Suchy is a 20-year-old Czech defender playing for Slavia Prague. Like Kaboul, he can also play in midfield. This might have more truth to is as he said, when asked about interest from Everton and Rangers, "no, also other clubs from the Premier League - Newcastle and Aston Villa."

I don't follow much Czech football so I can't say I know much about him other than he is young, 6ft 1" and has played 66 games for Slavia Prague.

Onto the next bid of news, both involving Blackburn. Their Chairman has confirmed that they've rejected bids for Bentley and Friedel. He also said that Friedel has told him that he wants to leave Blackburn.

It looks as though Spurs put in a bid recently for Bentley which was less than the bid they rejected from us, but not by a lot. These valuations vary from source to source, but it's anything from £10m and £9m to £15m and £12m.

Bentley and Fridel are both good players but Blackburn want £17m for Bentley and I'm not sure if he's worth it. I think the rumour is about £2.5m for Friedel and I'm not sure, at 37, he's worth that much either. But that's the crazy world of football for you! Blackburn finished one place behind us and I can see why they don't want to sell their best players unless the price is right.

I read a quotations from someone at Blackburn that one of the bids for Bentley came in while Hughes was still managing.

The quotation comes from Blackburn's Chairman, John Williams: We've had bids from two clubs for David Bentley; one when Mark Hughes was manager, and the other very recently. They have both been rejected."

Not looking good for tomorow, i'm working in Stockholm at the moment and ive got a ticket for the match (Stockholm-Odense £20 flight)Odense are a strong team and been playing now in the danish league 2 months, so they are a lot fitter than us..! I really think it is shocking that MON talks about europe being this great avenue for villa to pursue, but he still has'nt bought a right back..!! And with Zat playing his normal style of crap defending, i think we will leak goals... When really we should be looking at getting a draw with an away goal..

I think that might've been ours, as rumour was we bid a while back. And Ince said that Spurs hadn't bid last week.

I think the Kaboul thing is just North London talk trying to claw some money back for a flop.

The young lad from Slavia is a very good prospect and if true should be followed through. He's highly thought of in these parts of Europe. I'm in Czech Rep Sat so will speak to some people and report back.

I'm all for the youth getting a chance but MON has not done a good job in getting in numbers like the season before. I just hope the European campaign doesn't end at the first hurdle.

I'm for Bentley but not at the figures mentioned he's good but not that good. In regards the Blackburn keeper its going to be who offers him a 2 year deal. At 37 I'll be amazed if either Villa or Man City do .... A 1 year with an option to extend maybe.

well, 3 mill for both Brads, and having our keeper position sorted for the next five years (one or two with Friedel at the sticks and then at least 3 more with Guzan) is a bargain. Especially when Carson's going for 4-10 mill.

C'mon Luke. Stop all the 'not sure if he's worth this and not sure if he's worth that'. Ellis has gone. We are now trying to play with the big boys, we should pay whatever the hell Blackburn want for bentley to send out the message that 'Villa are back and we're going places'. AND we should also pay Bentley whatever he wants in salary. If we seriously want to be a big club again we need to start thinking and acting big and not losing out on players we need because we weren't prepared to pay the asking price. Those days are gone!

Bentley definitely worth £17m I reckon. If that's what they want, just give it to them.

Friedel and Bentley should cost between £16m - £20m for the pair. I say pay it. Friedel in goal for next two seasons and specialist goalkeeper coach for Guzan as well. He has been excellent last few seasons. Bentley will get better and better. Put an offer in that can't be refused.

Friedel will be class. Goalkeeping conundrum solved with £3.5m outlay. MON has played a blinder there. I don't care if he's 37. He was outstanding last season. £2.5m for someone who will be worth anything upto 20 points next season is a steal. To find a striker to provide that sort of points return, you can kiss goodbye to £20m. Thank god theres no more Carson or Sorenson to worry about. He'll marshall our defence, which inturn will give our midfield assurance and structure. Suchy sound alright. Get him in too!

i think villa should forget about kaboul and the other geeza and go for a german defender that plays for schalke: Heiko Westermann and also for another couple of midfielders and a striker. also villa should get a backup leftback to fatfred.

See Carson has just joined WBA - I take it MON didn't think much of him? I think the Albion have done some good business in the summer and the Dutch Right back was a coup - MON unless you start working things out re numbers - We will be falling behind!

To be honest our squad is paper thin! We need players and we need players now! If bentley is a realistic option then we need to sign him ASAP! MON should be able to appreciate blackburns situation with their asking price as we are in a similar situation with liverpool and barry!! we can't have one set of rules for how we negotiate and another with how we want to be negotiated with! pay them 17.5 for good measure! and then maybe next time we do business with them it will be alot smoother!!

Just saw an e-mail from Villa shop that was funny .... Buy a team kit and get a chance to be in the Villa squad picture - We must be so desperate for numbers - MON I don't have to buy a top to be a squad player if you need!

I can get a flight from Poland to Dennmark tonight!

Ron
Ron Wrote: | 19.37BST | Jul 18, 2008

I agree with the combination offer. If good enough i can't see Blackburn refusing,Ince will have money to buy players that he might have lined up.
But i do think Bentley is holding out to see if we get in Europe first, if we don't then we can kiss good buy to him signing.
If thats the case wev'e got to look at Millner, Lennon or Wright-Philips.

Villa to win 1-0 2moro

Friedel would be a superb addition to our first team numbers! Absolutley superb! People may disagree with me but we'd get 3 good years out of him if he came! He's consistent, experienced, a good shot-stopper, very good with penalties and 1-1 situations! And also has a mature football brain! Which is ideal! And the best thing about him? He isn't scott carson, whom has just signed for the baggies for £3.25million! Not £10mill!

As for bentley, he'd walk straight in to the starting XI and i think we should pay the £17mill thats been quoted/reported!

And finally, as for the game tomorrow, i'd settle for a draw bringing them back to B6, i think the squad is too unfit and wafer-thin to win very comfortably! And i would expect us to have some sort of reinforcment by the time we get them back to B6! So i wouldnt expect too much from the lads! But definately we should do 'em in the home leg!

How can anyone reasonably interpret Williams's statement to mean that Spurs have recently bid for Bentley? Yet this is the quotation that has formed the basis on which everyone is reporting that Spurs have made such a bid.

I have a bad feeling about tomorrows game, I'm sorry that I'm pessimistic but this is just the sort of fixture we will slip up on. Just looking at the paper thin squad is enough. We need signings, we're supposed to have the money now aren't we? Or are we going to have to wait til Barry p*sses off? Friedel I dunno, plenty of experience a good short term signing, Bentley an attitude as long as your arm apparently will he upset the apple cart? So many questions who'd wanna be a manager?

If Carson is worth 3.25mil, Friedel for around 2mil is fair. Seriously though this is getting ridiculous, we are playing our first game on saturday, tommorrow and we still havnt addressed our squad issues. We have signed two squad players and one that is injured. Still no right back. Unprofessional start to the new season. MON has spent most of his time talking about Barry and commenting at the euros, rather than preparing for our assault on the top 4 for this coming season. He is a great manager, but if we had a decent sized squad last season we would have automatically qualified. Why the hell are we doing this again? We all know we had a shorter time frame to bring in players, and we are yet to sign any players that will take us forward, bar Davies when he is fit. Sidwell is a valuable squad member in my opinion,as i feel NRC should start before him, that is ofcourse if we sign an attacking MF. They are both too similar to start together, like someone said before, " when asking for a sandwich, one rarely asks for cheese and cheese".....Sorry if i seem to be loosing patience but im sure there are others who feel the same. I dont expect MON to have made all of the signings already, just to have filled a couple of holes that we clearly have

Villain from Texas Wrote: | 21.57BST | Jul 18, 2008

According to MON, we're not pursuing Bentley any more:

“I will tell you we put an offer in for Bentley which we thought was fair but it was rejected,” added O’Neill.
“This was a long time ago and we’ve not pursued that since so we’re moving on.
“We’ve got other people we would be very keen to bring to the football club, all pretty decent players.”

bentley has agreed terms at villa, to be finialised after game, but we must win 1st otherwise we will lose him to spurs!

villa will get defeated tom, due to the lack of spending by mon, sorry guys but he is a joke, and i am just being honest that i have a very very bad feelin about tom, i can see us going down 3 nil. the guys are lacking confidence!! do you blame them? after all the promises by the club about new signings?

i have come to terms that we will just finsh mid table, i know that wat i have said will hurt many people on here and trust me i am feeling it too. but if we fuck up tom then we will say goodbye to bentley!!! then it will be milner.

We should be going all out for wright-phillips who in my view is a better player with a much better attitude than Bentley. Two American keepers should be a perfect match with Friedel giving us a good year while Guzan adjusts, when next season they can swap over. Have to say as much as I like o'niell as a manager his transfer dealings seem less impressive. Surely with the state of the squad and our early start we needed players in sooner than this. Surely we have money and perhaps this year we should of just paid what it took to get his first choice and quality signings so that we can really push on and achieve things so that next year we can attract players even easier.

I like Michael Johnson but he's already cup-tied for UEFA cup. A bit of a short term view but still think MON would look elsewhere first
