Nigel Reo-Coker doesn't want to stay at Aston Villa, according to pals and the Mirror

Saturday, 04 October 08, 02:13 AM · Comments (70)

First off, it's in the Mirror; the same paper that Bill Howell works for so you can take this with whatever you want, I'll take it with a pinch of salt. The thing is, it really wouldn't surprise me.

Despite Reo-Coker so far having a great season and for me having bags of talent and most definitely one that is going to get better, he's been played out of position and with his form as of late, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some interest and he's been tapped up.

Like yesterday, I've not actually seen the copy and suspect it's more than what the BBC gossip pages have listed, but it's now in the public domain, so I'm going to comment on it.

Aston Villa's London-born midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker has told pals he has no intention of signing a new deal with the Midlands club and is considering a return to the next summer.

Like I've said above, it wouldn't surprise me if he wanted off and it wouldn't surprise me if he has been tapped up but he really is onto a good thing at Villa and if there is any shred of truth in this then I'd be quite unhappy to see him leave.

He's a very good player and he's only 24 years old - everything is possible but I'd really not like to see him go. Still, it's only a rumour, so take it whichever way you want.

I'll tell you what I'd like to hear though; Reo-Coker coming out and saying he has no idea where this paper-talk has come from and that he's more than happy to commit his career to Aston Villa and that he's loving it at the club.

Only words I know, that in the modern game mean nothing, but I'd still like to hear them.

Sounds like absolute rubbish to me but we're going to hear a few more rumours like this in the coming year as certain sectors try to unsettle our team.

Damian I couldn't disagree more. I'm amazed he's making the starting line up this season to be honest. He still needs an age on the ball and constantly gets dispossessed as a result of that. I sit in Trinity Road and have seen a lot of ocassions so far this season where he's been taking stick from the bench and has been arguing with people on it. Obviously still has a massive chip on his shoulder and doesn't even vice captain anymore, so something's not right. Weak link I say, and never worth the money we paid for him. Nigel Mediocre I say - send him back to the nuckle dragging racists.

No loss will leave us the ability to play milner and young in their favourite and best positions. NRC has been upstaged by petrov this year and salou looks to be a bright star for the not to distant future, MON should strike a deal for a world class striker and use HARWOOD and NRC as part of it

I will say he has been better this season, but thats not saying much..! I also think it would be a better midfield with Petrov and Barry, with Milner and young on the wings + sidwell as cover. Saying that who would he go to in London..?? Spurs being the team i can think of wanting him..! Ha.

The better we do in the league the more of this type of gutter press we will be subjected to. "Told by pals" no respectable journalist would put their name to such a story.

Whats the difference between spurs and a triangle?

i think its because he was over looked for the captaincy so a bit of sour grapes perhaps. he is not our best midfeilder so can easily be replaced.
to put it in a nutshell if he shows no loyalty then piss off...simple!!!

NRC is our unsung hero who has shone this season. Very hard worker and wins a lot of balls. Would hate to see him leave this early.

However I dont think there is any truth in this article. DeGough is right lets just forget it.

NRC has worked his tits off this season....granted he does sulk and winge quite a bit but he gets on with it, i know oneill has some mad practices when it comes to players playing well out of position but i think NRC realises that there are other team members willing to play whenever, wherever.....

So if villa finish top 4 he would go to spurs? Only chelsea and Arsenal could really buy him / attract him. Can't see it being Arsenal so it must be chelsea, 2 days before we play them, its mind games, typical of the london based media. When we break the top 4 we will have to get used to this type of unsettling media coverage.UTV

NRC has been one of our best players this season and I would be a bit disappointed if this story is true. However dont agree with him losing vice cataincy - Barry was captain vs QPR as NRC and Laursen didn't play.

The Mirror seems to be enjoying having a go at Villa lateley, maybe Bill Howell is getting his own back for the stick he's had. Firstly they tell us we can't afford Barry's wages and now this. They reported on 3rd October that NRC was to sign a new improved deal. Wish they'd make their minds up!

He's good but not irreplaceable. While it smacks of gutter press, there is usually no smoke without fire and I can imagine Reo-Coker wanting to play for Arsenal. Sidwell, Gardner, Milner, Osbourne will all be pleased. I guess MoN will have it out with him and if he says he wants to go, he will go. Don't think we'd get more than £11m for him.

Absolutely nothing in this at all, he's committed to Villa and he won't dignify crap like this with a reply. His form has been great this season and he is one of the best ball winners in the league.

Although some on this blog never give him a chance he could play in any team in the top of the prem and be valued. I don't know what a player has to do to win o er some fans - this man has made such a big difference to our team - if nothing else just look out for how many times he wins the ball for us & how that helps our attacking style of play. Seemingly some people only notice the not so reliable distribution of the ball - there's a lot more gooing on out there.

I really hope he doesn't go anywhere but he just appears like one of those people. I bet he grew up wishing he was 6 inches taller, and he just seems like he thinks he deserves more of everything than he gets, ie; respect without commanding it etc. Yes he is a valuable player to any team but it wouldn't surprise me to learn that his team ethics fall a bit short of everyone else's in the squad. My betting is that he got his hopes up about being the new Villa Captain and when that didn't materialise that's when he started to think about leaving.

I can’t believe what I’m hearing from some of you so called Villa fans!!!
Claiming Reo Coker is mediocre or comparing him to Gavin McCann, saying he’d be no loss and easily replaced.
To you, I say, wake up, stop sniffing glue, don’t get drunk so early in the day and actually watch a Villa game this season. Reo has been immense; his work-rate alone puts nearly every other player in the Premiership to shame!
His running down the right, willingness to take on a full back and little bursts of pace have been a particular highlight of a so far great season. Most players will give 100% some great players give 110%, Reo gives 150% every match and never disappears on the pitch.
This is a natural leader, captain of Wimbledon in his teens, captain of West Ham in his early 20’s and still only 23/24... Vice captain of Villa last 2 years and I say future captain of Villa in 2/3 years and for many years after.
So all you mediocre and so called Villa fans...
F**K OFF! YOU CAN BE EASILY RERPLACED, HE CAN NOT!!!

These rumours and leaks are typical of the way that NRC and his agent work. We've seen it all before.

As a previous poster has stated, there is no smoke without fire. Long spells as captain for the England U21's and West Ham have done nothing but inflated his ego beyond his ability. We really did give him the captaincy when he was too young.

Anyway, I'm sure many West Ham fans would like to be where Villa are at the moment. NRC should realize what he's got...but these rumours are true, well true to form anyway. Deluded buy still thinks that he's good enough for one of the big 4.

I think he has improved massively since the middle of last season, but I don't think there is a team as good as us in the premier league where he would get a game in his favoured position.

However thinking about it perhaps there is water to the Jenas rumour - Spurs could really do with a player of NRC's bite and tenacity judging from their performance against us.

Just a thought.

I think NRC could would consider leaving but only to a team who are in the Top 4 or on a par with us. Chelsea, United & Liverpool wouldnt be interested. That leaves Arsenal, who were interested before so it is possible, they do sometimes get bossed by more physical teams. Although NRC wouldnt exactly fit in well with their passing game he would toughen up their midfield and not get bullied.

If you think a player is rubbish, but Martin O'Neil keeps playing him then maybe you should question who is more likely to be right. The man who has taken Villa from the threat of relegation to the fringe of Champions League form, or you...some bloke who watches from the stands. If you think it's you, then you're unlikely to listen to sensible discussion. If you agree it's Martin O'Neil, then how about looking for what he clearly sees in the player and give him the benefit of the doubt in future.

Ashley described how positive the Villa dressing room is, what a welcoming place it is, how everybody gets along and how new players feel part of the set up within a few days. Almost as if to prove the point Zat Knight walked in unexpected and got a warm welcome from both of them.

NRC isn't going anywhere, he's not disrupted, he's a very good player in a very good team that's going places.

But what about us. One stupid unattributed comment in the paper and look at the debate that follows. The villa team are loyal and committed to the cause We can't even stay loyal after one unfounded cheap article in the more unreliable section of the media.
