Nike or Reebok in line for Aston Villa kit deal

Sunday, 21 January 07, 03:13 AM · Comments (27)

Aston Villa very close to confirming who will manufacture the new kit with Nike and Reebok the two companies topping the list.

It is thought that the new kit could come in to play as early as next season although Hummel do have a deal in place for next year and it would take a financial package to sweeten the blow for the Danish company.

There seems to be a train of thought that a company like Nike or Reebok will put the shirts in shops that Hummel wont or cant. I think if Hummel were going to make money out of having Villa shirts all over the land then they would. I don't think a new manufacturer is going to make a whole lot of difference to shirt sales.

If the club want to sell more shirts, just like they want to sell more tickets for the matches at Villa Park, then I'm afraid the only thing that is going to do that is a successful team. All these things the new board are doing are nice but you won't get a full Villa Park because of the Holte Hotel or free coach travel to away games.

As it stands I really don't care about the kit as long as it's claret and blue but it appears that it is important to a few supporters.

Edited: Dutch to Danish.

Hummel is Danish. Not that that's very important though...

Hummel is a Danish company, not a Dutch one...

The kit manufacturer is important in terms of the club's image. Hummel simply doesn't have the cachet of, say, Nike, Puma or Adidas, the latter of which now owns the Reebok brand. Hummel is in the same league as Lonsdale, Diadora and Joma. It's an also-ran -- something Villa under Lerner don't want to be any more.

But it's much more than that. Supporters want replica kits of a decent quality, and the club wants the much greater distribution reach that multinationals can provide. I live outside the UK and have never seen a Hummel shirt on sale.

The likes of Nike and Reebok can also offer a much larger range of casual wear, where there's lots of money to be made.

Hummel is a danish company, not dutch. I think its cool we have a kit sponsor who doesnt sponsor every team in the world, and it has made aston villa a known club here in Denmark because of it.
Would like to have "le coq" back though..:-)

I wouldn't mind having a kit from either to be honest, really speaking the Hummel kit isn't exactly the most inspiring in the world, and call me superstitious but some of our best times were when we had the old Reebok kit.
Though i'm surprised, I distinctly remeber reading an article on this site when Coventry had signed Puma as their kit manufacturer and whoever wrote it was complaining about the fact that even Puma could manage to get a decent kit manufacturer and we could only get Hummel.....

This is the sort of thing we need; ditch the sub-standard and go with the quality, something that wouln't have happened under Deadly.

When we got the Hummel deal it sort of described what had happened to Villa and I think Nike or Reebok does exactly the same.

Up the Villa!

hummel is not an also ran it is in a different niche to puma jog and the rest, look at their other stuff and it's pricey, funky and well designed. if anything we are punching above our weight with them.

the english don't get it.

Brands mean everything to kids and young adults, perhaps your getting to old to understand. Any discerning young person knows the difference between Lonsdale and Nike or Joma and Adidas. Sometimes wearing the claret and blue shirt with pride is not quite enough. Its needs a brand name to really carry it off. Particularly when you’re forking out around £35 for a shirt. It's also a well know fact that the over 40's will buy less shirts than the 10 to 40 age bracket. So I presume Damien your around 55 years old LOL!

i would buy a nike villa shirt, but not a hummel one. i think it would make a big difference.

I seem to be in the minority that loves Hummel kits. I think the kit this season is brilliant. All my firends, whether Villans or not, love it as well.

What people seem to forget is if we have a Nike kit, it's exactly the same as every other nike kit in the league apart from with colours. Like a paint-by-numbers kit. I prefer something a bit distinctive.

Cheers for the comments Lloyd W but I'm nowhere near 55!

My point is it doesn't bother me who the kit is made by and while I like Nike it won't make a difference to me buying the kit or wearing it with pride.

Nike or Hummel or adidas or Reebok ... it just doesn't bother me but I can see why others would prefer it ..

Come on then Damien, so your older than 55? So your ???

Maybe Hummel isn't a bad brand, but what does Nike or Reebok say about you as a club? Your associated with the 'best' brands and usually only the best clubs are.

I actually agree the current kit is pretty good. When talking about shirt sales it's not just your team shirt but the apparel that goes with it and our package doesn’t quite cut it!

I havent bought a villa shirt since they decided to put 'COWS' on the front, and party because I was sick of buying inferior quality/crap goods.

No disrepect Hummell but when your product is on the rack next to a Nike/Addidas product you can physically see and feel the differences. And to be fair i will run to JJB as soon as nike are making our kit and part with my cash no probs........I think alot of others will as well.

Nike or adidas kits are the only ones that you'll see in non-specialty stores here in the US. You don't see Villa shirts in any stores at all really, but having nike would probably change that.

i beleive signing a deal with nike would boost all interest in aston villa club completely. for a start being younger myself i am able to say that all of my friends are adement that they want to buy the villa shirt next season if it is nike. plus having the nike brand aston villa begin to be associated with bigger clubs such as manchester united and arsenal.

When I first heard about the Nike rumors back in February I thought it's a nice thought but it isn't going to happen. To be up there with big teams who would wear the Nike tick on there shirt like us is almost unbelievable, but as time went on the Nike deal became more of a fact than fiction and I found myself really interested in the idea of buying a Villa shirt.

I never was disheartened by the idea of having a billionaire chairman at Villa, for a kid my age it's a dream come true to have a chairman with money who is willing to spend big money on players and sponsorship.

I think the Nike deal would enlarge Aston Villa and make them more noticeable, but the fact that it will bring Villa into another light of winning, is something we cannot see.

when i heard that villa had signed a deal with nike, i was really surprised. even signing back with reebok would have been a big deal. can't wait til i get a nike shirt next season. if its good for barcelona its good enough for villa,:). next season is gna turn us around from mid table to top 6. iv been loyal since i was 10.

PS. hope theres a star next to the badge. we hav won the european cup so it should be recognised.

Well, my only beef with Hummel is that their large away shirt is like, extra-huge! My GF got me the away shirt for my birthday last year and it is massive. I mean, I'm not exactly small either, but the neck is bloody massive. To top it all off, the previous season yellow away shirt was fine in a large...weird.

Looking forward to a Nike shirt, just hope that it isn't too bland and boring, as per many Nike team shirts.
