Nine points: Liverpool, Blackburn then Newcastle

Thursday, 14 June 07, 04:18 AM · Comments (33)

I'm predicting nine points only because if I did anything else it wouldn't be right and if there is ever a time to have a little optimism it's about now, right before Randy Lerner dips into his savings to spend a little cash.

That and we started last season well and with a few new players, they're going to want to impress and make an impact and the opener is against Liverpool at home.

The full fixture list, including pre-season can be seen here but some notable dates are November 10th and April 19th against Birmingham City. Blackburn and Newcastle are then both away games before coming back to face Fulham; probably another three points which would make twelve from twelve. Pre-season optimism is great, isn't it?

Maybe on April 19th we will be in a position to relegate them. Wouldn't that be nice! Lastly, don't be surprised if the opening fixture is televised.

I can see us relegating Blues on April 19th too.
Hoping they only manage 15 points next season!
6 of which will not be against Villa. Probably just Liverpool..as usual.
I think 7 points out of 9 for those first 3 games, draw Liverpool and win at Blackburn and the Geordies.

I sense a win against liverpool

They are notoriously slow starters
Full House full of optimism
new signings, so expectancy/excitement

and if we win imagine how that sets up our season,I am really really happy with that fixture ;D

Was just thinking Liverpool couldn't have asked for a better fixture list. An easy away game first means we can have the Bubble Boys and Chavs at home in the next two games. I think you mean you'll have 6 points from 9.

nice to see a Liverpool fan with some optimism also ;)

U guys been sniffing glue again?... Liverpool are streets ahead of us and there is no way they will lose so early, and i predict the geordies will finish much stronger wil Big Sam and will end up somewhere in the top 6. Blackburn are good under Hughes and should never be underestimated... We couldnt have wished for a worse start imo, but it will be a chance fo M'ON to show he is anything like we thought he would be, because so far im disapointed.

3 points at the most im afraid, comming from Blackburn if anywhere.

I think I agree a tad more with Razor, 6 from 9. Liverpool are strong, but then it depends on who they and who we buy.

But as Damo says, good to see optimism!

We couldn't have asked for a better fixture list, with the first difficult match only on 29th March 2008, ManUtd away !!! ;D
BRING IT ON, CAN'T WAIT !

Bearvill Wrote: | 15.49BST | Jun 14, 2007

If it was Man U or Chelsea at home I wouldn't have been optimistic

But Liverpool just dont strike me with fear especially at home, look at last season FFS they were shite at our place if we had more balls we would have won

I'm sure the scousers would amit that they are slow starters as well, it will be good to test our new team out against them and if we win it will set us up ace for the season

Rather Liverpool then Wigan ;D

Razor
Razor Wrote: | 15.54BST | Jun 14, 2007

If you roll us at home then fair do's, but the Reds will be sharp come the start of the season. We will have had a full and proper pre-season, with competitive games in Asia against fellow Prem teams. Liverpool will have no excuses to start the season slowly. Now, I just need to know where are you sticking us away fans, are they extra shite seats now?

at Razor

you wont be behind the goal any more. all away fans are getting the doug ellis stand. or as villa fans like to refer to it; the witton lane stand

You wont get anything against Liverpool - FACT.
Newcastle will get at least a point - FACT.

I can see no more than 4 points out of the first nine...not nine. Dont let hope cloud our judgement lads - simple fact is LFC and now NUFC are streets ahead of AVFC.

Another battle to finish top half of the table coming up for Martin 'O' Neill's army.

I'm predicting 7 points for Villa. Newcastle are shit and always will be (don't know why they are such a big club????) and blackburn i feel won't have the calibre of quality to beat us. Liverpool will be a difficult game, but again they are not as good as people make them out to be. there good in europe, but no where near being title contenders, for one they need a top quality striker not cheap additions. the problem with bnitez is that he signs shit loads of players and hopes for the best, who ever does well stays, who does crap goes.

luke Wrote: | 17.01BST | Jun 14, 2007

NUFC aren't streets ahead and they've signed no-one to prove it. Barton will be good, but Parker was. They could do with getting rid of Owen and getting a decent striker in. I think the problem teams like Liverpool, the Mags and us face is a lack of decent strikers around to sign. Or in Liverpool's case, getting them to fit in with Benitez's tactics. Bellamy and Crouch are both good players but haven't done as well as Benitez had hoped.

Getting rid of Titus Bramble strengthened Newcastle's defence while weakening relegation rival's Wigan's at the same time. Genius move by Allardyce!

toon ..... typical geordie, can only talk about number of fans not actual football.

Newcastle cant be considered a big club, no trophy in 50 years that isnt the sign of a big club sorry.

concentrate on actually winning matches and playing well rather than just showing off about how many fans you have, and this is only due to the fact theres only one club in the city.

Listen to urself guys... Ur talking about Liverpool and Newcastle not being big clubs because they havnt won/arent title contenders... well what are we then?, have AVFC fans become so deluded that we actually tell ourselves that we are bigger than these clubs... that would be like Bolton stating they are bigger than us... after all they usually finish higher.
How big a club are, is not measured by present success. Its measured by global brand, number of fans and history. We are a pretty decent side in that compartment, but to be honest we are not near Newcastle never mind Liverpool FFS!!! Im really sad to see the supporters of my club make such fools of themeselves. :(

Really tough start! I can see us earning a point against the Scouse but losing at Ewood and a point against the Toon.

I'm not too bothered that we've got Liverpool on the first day of the season. It will give us an early chance to test ourselves against one of the top 4 and we will get a good idea of how good are much changed squad actually is. Liverpool never have it easy against us at Villa Park and I expect us to take the game to them and it wouldn't surprise me if we beat them. I also expect us to win away to Rovers on day two and I wouldn't be too worried about the trip up to St. James' the following weekend as I don't expect the toon to be as fantastic as everyone is predicting.
Can't wait for the derby matches again this season and I'm not talking about playing county. Wouldn't that be just perfect if on April 19th we completed the double over the blues while also relegating them at the same time. But maybe I don't want them to get relegated as I want to have the pleasure of beating them twice every season!!!

vilians... i happy for most of youse to underestimated fortress Ewood... with an away trip to the Riverside as our first game we'll be six points ahead of you come Thursday 16th... that's of course if the game isn't posponed due to our involvement in Intertoto / UEFA (that's Europe, just in case some of you had forgotten!) PS - this is only friendly banter... please do not take offence... PPS... Bluenoses are scum and will get relegated

I'm glad you all think Blackburn will be such a walk over. As a fan I've passed caring about how all other teams see us as an esy win (despite us finishing higher than most of them over tha past two seasons).

It's all stupid speculation anyway because we still have loads of transfers to endure yet, The teams may look enntirely different come matchday.

Nick123 - Bentley , Pedersen, Silver boot McCarthy, Friedel, Nelsen, Samba shall I go on? In fact the only player from Villa I would take is Gareth Barry, and I still wouldn't swap for Warnock.

Why the hell are you noobs going on a bout NUFC being bigger than the villa?????? the only reason they get as many fans as they do is because they are the only team in Newcastle and the city unlike Birmingham dosent have a shared fan-base.You ppl really get on my tits, its pre season and we have a right to be optomistic or whats the point in buying a season ticket every year.I suggest you think about you commitment to the club and if in doubt maybe you should f off up north

I HATE BLUES:... So Liverpool would be twice our size if they didnt have Everton and the Fox would have caught the rabbit if he didnt have to pi**. Ur talking nonsense and u can take ur ifs back to the kindergarden, fact is that clubs such as Newcastle, Liverpool, Manchester, Chelsea and Arsenal are bigger clubs than us. live with, i do... No sense in telling urself lies, just to keep ur day going. But dont lose faith, clubs such as Spurs and Everton are not bigger than us and Chelsea wasnt bigger than us before they got Abramovich, so miracles can still happen, i just dont think we will see them with Lerner and M'ON... Bring on somebody with some REAL cash pls.

No body seems to have mentioned the end of the season. Our final 5 games. Dercy away, Bummingham Titty at home, Everton away, Wigan at home and West Ham away. If we are fighting for Europe that is a good run-in, except for Everton away. If we get anything there, not unheard of, it could give us a boost after the inevitable home win over Small Heath and see of the hopes of a rival for Europe. Also we don't seem to have a hard run of games, for example meeting Man Utd, Chelsea and another difficult fixture away over a short peace of time.

The Lord has spoken and not only has he delivered Randy & co, his son, St Martin and now we seem to have balanced fixture list with a nice run in.

Here endeth the lesson.

Praise the Lord.

Karlcool...Iam aware that certain teams are much bigger than villa, and yes if Everton didnt exist you cant deny Liverpool would benifit from this in 1 way or another, but i never mentioned any other team in my post other than NUFC.After reading your other comment you seem to determine the size of the club on its fan-base, which if you read my post it does explain why certain teams can attract the number of fans they can i.e only club in the city.As for your kindergarden comment , im sure you meant kindergarten. ;D
