No move for Jermain Defoe and the punt

Saturday, 19 January 08, 04:38 AM · Comments (28)

Jermain Defoe isn't coming to Aston Villa. Well, that's the impression I've got from the comments made by Martin O'Neill recently.

It's a pity Defoe wasn't at Bodymoor having a look around and it's a pity that terms were not discussed, but I suppose Martin O'Neill can't say those things happened otherwise we'd see Spurs telling their supporters that Aston Villa have permission to talk to the player.

Seeing as we don't have permission, if Martin O'Neill was to confirm anything he'd be in trouble. In fact, if he was interested in Defoe, he'd make point of not been at the training ground on the day that the player came up to see a couple of mates.

But, O'Neill hasn't even spoken to the player. "It is simply untrue, absolutely and utterly untrue - it couldn't be any fairer than that," O'Neill told Sky Sports News.

"I think that sort of statement, if you're talking about a player at a football club - where the two haven't talked to each other, is grossly unfair."

Well - no Jermain Defoe then, and most of us would have liked him too. Never mind, to the punt.

I'm keeping it simple today and it's one £10 bet on Blackburn, Portsmouth, Manchester United, Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle. If it wins it pays £200.45 - not much considering the number of matches!

That's it for me, unless somebody doesn't sign, then I'll not be here not telling you who hasn't signed.

He's a player I would have loved to see here. SO, I am a bit disappointed that it has been rubbished, but then again who's to say we still can't sign him this month? As for transfer rumors at the moment... I have no doubt that we will sign some players, but I have absolutely no idea who we are going to sign right now.

I don't think this Defoe transfer is over yet!

MON whenever confronted about transfer targets is always very defensive, loves to keep his cards close to his chest. Just because he hasn't been round the training ground doesn't mean that he won't in future! I expect O'Neill to make a bid for Defoe in the coming days.

After all, you can't have players round your training ground until you have been given official permission to do so which involves agree a fee. Hopefully that fee will be agreed soon, then the negotiations with the player can begin.

MON denied that Defoe had been to the training ground, NOT that he wasn't interested.

He might be one for the summer. We'd get him for £5m less too.

How can you say MON is clueless when we are sitting 6th in the league ? He's very astute about who he brings and sells.

This is getting somewhat ridiculous, are we seriously going to try and run out the season with this size squad?

I think every1 shud calm down over these transfer rumours. I'm just as eager as every1 else to see some new faces at villa park but i think we all should have unwavering if almost blind faith in MON, in just a season and a half look how he has transformed the place, we're sitting sixth in the table(tied fourth in my eyes), and evidently his previous signings are now coming good and helping us achieve that(okay, except petrov, but he is improving).

One other thing I've noticed is that quite a few of our youngsters are being loaned out to smaller clubs, and personally I think that surely this is a sign og good things to come. UTV!

its jus getin frustratin cos there doesnt seem to be a whisker of what we're upto an im gutted that we didnt even have a go for diarra. i mean if pompey cud sign him, then we shuda bin in for him, cos he is versatile and he would improve our squad.
just gotta keep bein patient.....................

Funny, the biggest news in our camp is that we are have not been in talks with a player. MON has to make some signings in this window though, simply because of our squad size. If he doesn't then he's simply lost his mind, which I'm sure he hasn't ;D

Not to bothered about defoe not coming, although i would of welcomed and enjoyed watching him play for villa. we do have up and coming quality and a nice mix of players that love and play 4 one another which is exactly what a team/club needs to win games.martin will bring in players im sure, but the right players and also players who are available. marlon harewood seems to bee a miss with the villa crowd, personally apart from giving the pen away v spurs he hasnt looked to bad,but most have got there way as he hasnt been picked a great deal anyway. as 4 defoe being made captain,i found that very strange!! could it be because its his last game in a spurs shirt??

Surely Taglor must be on holiday?! It's times like this that the the grim reaper crawls out from his burning hell like existence and critises everthing about the club.

There is no doubt we need more players but MON is very careful about who he goes for and how much he pays. This might mean we don't make a single signing in January. Remember at the end of the last transfer window a lot, me included, were disapointed with the lack of 'decent' activity yet we are 6th and level on points with 4th. I'd rather that than being 9th or 10th haven't purchased a number of supposedly quality players.

I was a little disapointed when MON sold Davis but, judging by his performances, it looks like he was right. The point is, he knows what and who he wants and it seems to be working. One thing is for sure, it's true when he says we are where we deserve to be. I doubt there are any Villa fans that are not happy with 6th (and more importantly level on points with 4th!!) at this stage of the season. If we manage to qualify for UEFA it will have been a fantastic improvement over two seasons and for the first time in years I beleive we might just do it!!

maybe a shot at darren bent is now worth a try, would have liked to see defo but thats obviously not going to happen, have faith in MON`s transfer policy it has worked so far, i think doyle is now more likely tho maybe giles barnes and crespo from sevilla, that would count as a successful transfer window

i'm confuused. have we actually got any money to spend ? the Mercury says that Crespo is within budget at 7m infering that Bosingwa is out of budget at 15m. we're at the point where it's unlikely that 7m players are going to improve the squad...ergo , spend big or settle for mediocrity , i think it's time the owner amd mon decided which it is to be !!

Woodinho Wrote: | 00.13GMT | Jan 21, 2008

Just read an article saying MON is concerned that even if we qualify for europe he dosen't think we have a big enough squad for it... I'M SORRY, ARE WE NOT SLAP BANG IN THE MIDDLE OF A TRANSFER WINDOW!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Whats going on over there at VP? You can't moan about something that is TOTALLY AVOIDABLE!!!! This is the best opportunity Aston Villa Football Club have had for automatic european qualification for years... and if we dont buck our ideas up UNAVOIDABLE injuries to key players, UNAVOIDABLE suspesions and AVOIDABLE transfer market inactivity are gonna screw up our chance!!!

Just get some quality in. These players on his shopping list should be sussed out before the transfer window as in if the club would sell them or not, that way we could of had some new quality scoring our second goal in our 2-0 win at Liverpool. Think MON is great but he turns me grey in the transfer window

Woodinho Wrote: | 15.10GMT | Jan 21, 2008

Cheers Villa_Rules... I too am not having a go at MON, i think he's doing a great job, suppose it's just frustration that we are again, most likely to leave it to the last minute to buy anyone... and again we are playing games (I mean the early - through to mid Jan fixtures) with the new blood still not in place.

Who wants a wager that should we lose at Anfield we hear the "Squad is thin on the ground" statement!

There is a few sites suggesting that we are after the two teenagers from Palace, Bostock and Moses. Everywere is suggesting that bostock is a no go, cos hes a Palace fan and also the likes of Barca and Chelsea are sniffing around, but Moses could be a done deal, and he has got a good repuatation!

UTV!
