Official: Barry should lead the team

Friday, 22 June 07, 02:28 AM · Comments (8)

On the back of something Doc wrote yesterday I started a quick question asking who should get the armband next season. If I'm honest, I am surprised with the voting, if not the actual outcome.

I've watched Barry for years and I've never seen him as a captain but 79.7% of you lot think he should be.

Of the voters in the quick question, 11.2% thought it should got to Reo-Coker if he signs and I was one of those that voted for him. When I look at Reo-Coker and Barry, it's like I'm looking at Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, to use maybe not the best example of players.

What I actually mean is Scholes is quiet and Keane was vocal. I've just always assumed that you wanted your captain to be vocal and while I'm sure Barry does communicate I don't think he's vocal enough; just my opinion.

Anyway, Reo-Coker hasn't yet signed so there is nothing to worry about, but rest assured Martin O'Neill will do things his own way and if he wants a more vocal captain, Barry will lose it; but it will be for the best of the team and for that you can count on Barry.

With no doubt Barry should be the captain, hes been around the club for a long time now and since hes been given the armband his football has steped up to a whole new level, the players know him very well and he is a crowd favourite, im not saying reo-coker will be a bad captain its just that i rekon the armband should go to a player that has vast experiance to the club and also can be an incredible inspiration to both the players and the fans and Barry has all these qualities Reo-coker is definatley a captain for the future though

Beckham captained England and lead by example. He's not the most vocal of players but he had the respect of his England team mates. It also brought out some of the best football in Beckham too. I see Barry's captaincy in similar terms. I wouldn't want Barry to be nudged aside as captain just because we brought in someone who's a louder character. Firstly I think a player should be in the team a season or two to earn the right to be the captain, and secondly, if the captaincy was took away from Barry after only 1 season it may well have a detrimental effect on his confidence and play.

How can you say Barry isnt a captain?!?!? Do you know anything about football, obviously not as you think Ridgewell is good enough to play for England.

This is a strange topic to be discussing and I'm thinking it is meant to be slightly tongue in cheek whilst we await for a signing to happen. In the words of McEnroe 'you cannot be serious??!!'
