O'Neill makes approach for Asier Riesgo, or does he?

Monday, 21 July 08, 06:55 AM · Comments (25)

Spanish media are reporting that we've made an approach for Spanish goalkeeper Asier Riesgo, currently plying his trade for Real Sociedad.

My Spanish isn't great and the Google Translate function also doesn't appear to be spectacular when it comes to Spanish but from what I've gathered no prices have been quoted and it's all coming from 'sources' close to the player, although it does look like there could be some official comment.

This is also the 123rd goalkeeper link this summer so take it as you want to take it but it's not that often, or is it, that the Spanish media start mentioning club names in England unless something has happened.

It will also go some way to wiping out my comments earlier that we don't seem to have any scouts working overseas, but until something happens, it's just a rumour and as such, it's treated as such and filed under the speculation section.

Anyway, that's about it for today, unless the club announce the signings of a few players that are going to actually take part in our pre-season. I'm off for a pint or three.

So what does this mean... that we're not getting Friedel/Green anymore? Or that Guzan isn't coming?

Very confusing.

vivavilla!: Guzan will come regardless, subject to a work permit. We still need another keeper, and that will be Friedel, Green, or someone else.

Another keeper? what keeper havent we been linked with ? can this one play at right back because if we dont get a right back soon i would say our chances of challenging top four would be a joke, and more like keeping out of the bottom four would be our challenge next season.

I know it's Tribal Football, and you need to take it with a rather large pinch of salt, but we are being linked to Danny Simpson at Manure who does in fact play right back! Hooray!

I may be wrong but I don't think we cna play anyone who signs this week on Saturday.

I think the names for the Intertoto had to be in by last Friday - no names can be added to it now.

Don't shoot me if this is wrong - this is just what I think based on very old rules.

Of course O'Neill has scouts working overseas, but, as many other managers would say, uk based players dont need as much time to adapt and so perform to their potential quicker. Personally, i'd rather have a strong english spine to the time, all having played in the premiership already with a couple of top class foreign internationals. No point spending money on players that are no better than those in the UK, this is part of the reason the England team is in the state it is.

I speak Spanish. The article says that Asier Riesgo has an significant offer to consider from Villa. BTW Riesgo is not such a good name for a goalkeeper - it means risky!!! Rather like Calamity James..

Must have read the same article, i can't see any references to a fee in spanish article (but my spanish is only to a basic level).

Villain from Texas: so we'll take this unknown instead of them? Smacks of O'Neill cheaping out again if you ask me.

Cheers Damian for clearing that up & for the email.

Lets hope the ruling is wrong? But im skeptical.

vivavilla!:

I don't know which of these keepers will sign, much less whether this particular rumor regarding Riesgo has any truth. You're reading too much into MON's motives from a rumor.

Chaps don't forget we have a goal keeping coach who is spanish & so i would have thought has contact within the spanish league. This story makes sence to me.

To the guy who joked that O'Neill was planning on playing two goalkeepers in matches this season I think you might be on to something...

If we do sign this guy maybe it means Taylor is leaving?
Plus, jumping on the band wagon, when are the right-sided outfield players arriving?
