For the record, this is the longest ever post title on the blog and as such I think it needs something to get the banter flowing because all we've got at the moment is the World Cup 2010 qualifying that really isn't as interesting and as normal, I'm not doing it in the same order as I title it.
First off is Gabby scoring the winner for England U21's yesterday against the Welsh. It was Carew like in so much that Carew scored a similar goal against Sunderland the other day - maybe having an experienced player alongside Gabby is actually going to teach him something. I didn't watch the game but when I saw the highlights and the goal went in, I jumped - it wont' be long until he is picked for the full squad.
Talking of the full squad, Ashley Young is probably wondering what the hell he has to do to get into it. He's just picked up the player of the month award in a month that Capello spent a lot of time watching football picking the best players.
Well, according to Barclays he has been the best player for two of the last three months and Capello still hasn't seen the light so I guess it's just a case of having to get y9our head down and having to wait for it.
Talking about getting your head down, James Milner has said he's happy at Villa, sitting on the bench, as long as the club are winning. Well, so would I be if I was on the money he was on.
I'm not his biggest fan yet, although that can change and for all the money we paid for him I'd quite like someone with a little more desire to play football. Call me old fashioned if you want but isn't football about playing the game and not happily sitting on the bench?
I’d be delighted if we won every game with me sat on the bench. What’s important is being part of a massive club doing well on a number of fronts." - James Milner
Moving on again and with another nice link - old fashioned football views - what is going on with fan expectations? I saw a post over on Vital Villa this week about fan expectations for this season and most of the people that voted would take top four over an FA Cup win. Am I the only one that wonders what has happened to our supporters if that is actually the case?
Football isn't about finishing top four, it's about winning things and I'd happily have taken the Carling Cup this season over finishing in 4th place and I'd happily take the FA Cup too.
But that I guess is where the debate begins. When Lerner came in and his monkey said said the target is Champions League in five seasons it was bought; hook, line and sinker. When I first heard that, a little bit of my passion for Aston Villa died.
When you hear someone telling you that the target is to still be a loser in five season time you've got to be quite desperate for change, but are we really changing? What I mean is, if those poll results are true of all Aston Villa fans then what is the point in going forward?
Under Ellis we played in Europe five or six times in the 90's and if that is what everyone wants, why were so many so baffled with his leadership? It appears he did what the majority wanted.
This is not knocking anyone but if the majority just want top four then we'll get top four and we'll not move forward from that. We've got to want to win the league and demand it of our owner and not happily accept anything else.
I know it takes time and I know we're moving in the right direction and I'm happy with where we find ourselves as of right now, but I believe top four is possible this season (if we spend in January) and I'm going to want a revision to our 'five year plan' this summer - maybe even a new one.
Right, sorry for the long one this morning but I didn't post yesterday as it was mostly all the same garbage from the club site. They'll be more tomorrow though!
In years gone by yes aiming for 4th was not good enough, but the way the PL is just getting to 4th is hard enough. As others have said, if we get into the Top 4 we will be able to attract a much higher quality of player and that will push us on. A FA or CC win would not really do that. More people around the world would take notice of us finishing in the Top 4 ahead of one of the Big 4 than us winning either of those cups.
Yes id rather win something for the day out and memorys but for the Villa cause it would probably be better for us to break into the Top 4.
Spurs won the carling cup last season. Did anyone care? No. It got them into Europe (Where they have two strikers btw, Campbell and Bent, hahaha) but they haven't kicked on and improved their position.
Last year was strange because only one of the four finalists from the cup competitions was from the 'Big 4', usually 3 or 4 of the finalists are from the 'Big 4' because they have the squad etc to deal with more than one competition (Chelsea finished 2 points of the winners of the league and were runners-up in two cup competitions).
Top 4 IS 3rd placed loser but if you get yourself up there and challenging you increase your profile, reputation. Some players will go to a club for mega-bucks others because they can see that the club is challenging and getting better.
Now which one is Spurs and which one is Villa?
Winning the Carling cup will look like F*** all if they are playing championship football next season.

I'm not having a pop, just pointing something out. Two summers ago e few were saying we can't go after player x because we don't have european football .. now we have some are saying it's because we don't have Chmapions League - what next - we don't have automatic qualification. Man City got that Brazilian without Champions League and they were so so close to getting the goody Brazilian too...
Look at what O'Neill has just come out and said too - there is no five year plan!
I'm probably just old fashioned - I want us to be competing for hte league and yes I know it's not easy .. but if you're only working to top four then whats the point .. there surely must be a bigger plan than the garbage we get fed
A top 4 finish is all about the money you earn playing champions league football - nothing else. I would rather win the FA cup myself than finish fourth but the real money isnt earnt winning cup competitions.
Damien - don't get me started on Ellis! When did Villa qualify for the champions league under him? That man took what he could out of the club and never put 1 penny of his own money into it. That idiot sacked the Tony Barton, who won the european cup, and replaced him with the manager of Shrewsbury Town!!! Can you imagine Man Ure sacking Ferguson and giving the job to Paul Simpson?
Milner was only saying that he isn't going to moan about not playing at the moment. As long as Villa keep winning he can understand that he must wait his time. Damien, I think you are misreading what was said.
I agree with Haines regarding Gabby. The kid has talent as his goal and man of the match performance for U21s shows. At Villa he knows he will play because the only real alternative is Harewood and MON has shown he doesn't see him as a first team regular. Look how well NRC and Petrov are playing because they know Milner and Sidwell are waiting to take their chances when they come. Competition up front is non-existant.
Ashley Young is my favourite player. He should be in the England squad and probably the team - no question. However, he wasn't Villa's best player last month let alone the league.
Its about progression.
If we achieve top 4 within 5 years we have progressed.
And also, with the extra revenue and profile of the champions league, will have a better chance of further progression.
Our aim is to CONTINUALLY progress, and a carling cup win is not a sign of progression, though as most fans would be happy to win it, our real target is to be a continuously competetive in the league.
milner is not a fool he knows the team is playing well . he also knows he will have 2 wait until some one has a bad day at the park. to me this is all good. for some one like milner to have 2 stay on the bench means we r starting to get depth in the squad the results and r current position in the leage shows that. but i think when he does get in he will take sum shifting so that means other players then have 2 up there anti all in all good 4 the club
heve to agree with keith on this one damian i too would like to win a bit of silverware but thats not the best we could or should hope to achieve we all want the league and evolution not revolution is the key to long term success for the club not to buy the league and achieve anything after that ...progression is the key to long term success
the future is bright utv
if portsmouth never won the fa cup last season then id love the fa cup this season, but because they did, its took the shine off the competition for a good few years so id prefer top 4 this season, because unlike winning the fa cup, it will mean we are better than one of the so called top 4.
Was just watching the dutch french match on some weird foreign channel.......
After 77 minutes Freddie Bouma came on a sub - I cant believe it - i thought he wasn't back for a few months yet. Absolutely delighted - he'll march right back into our first 11...
Barry off at the half.
And pretty definate Bouma did not just come on as sub...
unless the dutch are making clones - Bouma played tonight for the last 15 minutes...
i'll just have to take my foot out of my mouth......i have come to realise that it was a repeat of a euro championship match........i should have recognised something when Platini scored the first
i think most villa fans say top 4 because in todays day and age...that is a MUCH bigger achievement than it was, say in 1992...
purely because of the grip the "top 4" have nowadays, they didnt have that back in the 90's dont forget...
so i think its just a case of how much times have changed, back then, we'd have loved to win a cup every year, and now, we want to break that "vice grip" of the top 4 and firmly establish ourselves as one of the sky 4.
although, personally, id take a 5th place finish with a cup win every single year.
young shud be in the next squad, judgin the first half performance. shockin
Everything Keefvilla wrote was bang on! Topman
(*my snickers fell on the laptop )
Anything will do 'why does everyone think we can choose? I'd take anything personately! ITS A PLATFORM TO BUILD ON
We have'nt won jack for years! Getting to 4th would be some achievement because hand on heart people do you really believe we can win the fa cup! We've got no chance this year, believe that.
We have much of a chance of winning uefa ' if we keep grindin in out more and certain players doing more training instead of playing 3 girls?
We all no what ashley does late on the night! Does he get any sleep! Seriously though we should focus on having a very good european run this year? We derserve something.
Unless we buy quality in jan/summer the Chumps league has to much quality and ex for our current squad? Im fearing us getting Standard liege after we get past this mini league? Its all good to be a villa fan just don't get carried away and be realistic
Finish 4th and next year and the players will come ''Mention Chumps league to these overpaid superstars and they we come flocking to V.P? But will we pay the wages...........
Barry will be off, I wont be crying
me either goldie....
fyi mate damians just opend a topic on mr barry in the forum if you'd like to comment there also
did anone see gabbys finish tonight? WORLD CLASS.
absolutely identicle to what ronaldo scored against us last year...and is it being replayed everywhere like scumbags did?
errrrr no. its a disgrace. thats what kind of grip the sky 4 have. if gabby was a man utd player we'd have all seen the goal 20 million times already. pisses me off.
anyway keep it up gab
Rarely that I disagree with you Damian, but on this one I do. The whole concept of the "Big 4" has become so massively entrenched in English football that most fans, most media and most observers as well as the bookies judge it unthinkable that another side can break in. Nobody really gave a toss that Spurs won the Carling Cup or Portsmouth the FA Cup - those tournaments have been devalued by the Big 4's growing disinterest in them. No - the only way to make a real statement, the only way to throw down the gauntlet is to finish fourth. Now....we won't do that in my view this season, but if we invest more money in January on some serious goal-scorng talent, then 09-10 is fair game....
Anyway, if we progress far enough in the UEFA Cup, we may well win the Inter Jelly Tot cup...then we'll have won some silverware, eh?
Fluck the FA Cup, Fluck the Carling Cup, Fluck winning the UEFA Cup...Achieving top 4 in the English Prem is the 5 year plan. That's what we all bought into when MON took over. Anyone that says anything else is a bloody spineless toad. That's the Holy Grail as far as MON and Villa are concerned........
Get a bloody spine you mindless numpties.....Anything else is failure....
Obviously a top 4 finish would be great, it wont happen this season as we do have the quality of squad to sustain the season.I will be happy with a top 6 finish, anything less than that will be disappointing. A decent UEFA run would be good but i don't think we'll progress out the group,i've not been very convinced with our preformances in Europe this season, especially away when Lotex should have buried us in the first half. Gabby is so hit and miss i can never see him as a England regular, he's not going to get in front of Rooney,Heskey,Walcott and Defoe. Milner, we should have signed Wright-Phillips, who is a far superior player than Milner. Ashley Young will have to bide his time, He will get into the England squad but will struggle to get into the team, NOW if he was playing for Arsenal or Chelsea he would have been in the last two England squads.
I went to the u21s game Friday which was a bit of a laugh! Gabby had a couple of chances seeing one smash off the bar. He did play well but showed signs of 'lazyness'. Although scoring such a cool goal, making it look very easy, was great!
But what I really enjoyed was James Milner! He played well and he too had a couple of chances to score. Down the right hand side he made a lot of space and push forward very well. He also made a couple of crunching tackles!
I'd settle for a 5th this season with a chance of winning the FA cup. Getting to the final would be nice! Hopefully someone else will play manchester utd this time!!
Following on from the likes of Tom Hanks, Amy Winehouse & David Cameron etc another celebrity has jumped onto the bandwagon and declared their love for Aston Villa.
Kris Marshall, actor in BT adverts is the latest celebrity supporter. Will this glory hunting never end?
Top 4 for me please. although I'd sacrifice it for the UEFA cup. Doesn't that get you CL footy anyway?
why slate milner because he said he loves life at the villa and not rocking the boat by claiming he wants first team football.
if he had damian you would have called him all the big time charlies and slated him in another way.
why not post a constructive post on a player? and not all doom and gloom.
any move forward this season will do for me because if we keep improving then it can only be a matter of time before silverware comes to villa park.
why not both? top 4 and a cup preferably the uefa! as for milner's comment's,for me both good and bad.good for MON to have players with that attitude but sounds to me like he is happy to sit and get paid for doing nothing.I mean whats the point of being part of a massive club doing well if your not contributing to that success
i think we could have got a much better player for the 12 mill we spent on milner but i guess we will have to wait and see if he proves worth the money.
UTV!!
sorry guys i know i dont comment a lot and i know this is off topic but can anyone find me the togo vs swaziland african world cup qualifier highlights SALIFOU SCORED AND I NEED TO SEE THE GOAL
ps. i think id take the top 4 finish for reasons that above comments have already mentioned
we have no chance of winning the fa cup as we will lose to man utd in the third round
One thing I should point out is that fourth place will not neccessarily get us Champs League football.
Our lack of experience in the competition in the last few years will only give us a liable hard game in the final qualifying round that will be tough to win.
Don't get me wrong it would be brilliant to at least have the chance of making it, but with our current squad a game against the likes of Villarreal, Valencia or Juventus wouldn't be easy.
For this reason I would much rather prefer ideally Uefa Cup success or if not FA Cup success.
Still get European football, the fans are happy that trophies are being won and the club is still moving forward.
Maybe in three years when we do have a team that I would fancy to qualify for the Champs League then my opinion will change!
I like a trophy more than 4th place if i'm honest...
Just the day out at wembley, constantly watching other teams in finals and fans going mental when they win! I want THAT!!
"Look at what O'Neill has just come out and said too - there is no five year plan!
I'm probably just old fashioned - I want us to be competing for hte league and yes I know it's not easy .. but if you're only working to top four then whats the point .. there surely must be a bigger plan than the garbage we get fed"
Damian, dear boy, you’re at it again.
If it’s just to stir up controversy and get people responding, OK, I’ll let it go. But I sense that you’re really upset. In which case you need to step back, take a deep breath and think about the consequences of your words.
We’re doing well yet you’re trashing the club and the people who manage it. Good progress is made but it’s never enough for you. The problem is this: some time during this season we will falter – every team does. That’s when you will need to use the authority you have created with this site to lift the troops, sustain morale, keep the faith. But you’re squandering your ability to lead with this petty nitpicking. Stop it!!
Several posters have commented on the difference between the footballing priorities of the ‘90s and now and they are correct. Top 4 is now the goal; it’s much more significant than winning domestic cups.
Haines is spot on about competition for places. As soon as we get another class striker watch gabby lift his game (instead of his dick). It’s done wonders for the midfield.
churchil we do need a top class striker but MON will prob bring in the likes of Doyle so im not getting my hopes up anymore about who we are going to sign. By the way Gabby will never make it as an full international. He doesn't have the technique or work rate required. Defoe however seems to flying at the moment. Why we didn't sign him is beyond me.
The winner of the FA Cup should get Champions league, and may be the winner of the League Cup, thats the only way to keep them relevant, and stop the top 4 thing being so important.
The trouble is that now getting in the top 4 is like winning the league. You could even argue that finishing top 4 is more important than winning the premiership.
You have to be in champions league to play the big teams and attract the big players / keep your own big players.
churchil
i'm far from being upset, but like i've said in my post, maybe i'm old fashioned
i even said in my post that i think top four is achievable this season and if we don't get it i think we'll get it next because we are absolutely getting better and working towards something but last summer and the summer before and just after lerner took over all the talk was off this five year plan - christ, krulak used to use it all the time to put people at ease and as soon as i questioned it last season everyone reverted to it - well, it turns out now that o'neill isn't aware of it
i do however firmly believe that o'neill has a plan but what we don't know and only maybe o'neill knows is how much we've achieved of it
whats wrong with both? personally i'd rather win something than finish 4th - mostly because if you're winning top four should become a byproduct of that success
i'm also not saying its not important that we dont get top four - it's vital to kick on but isn't the game about winning?
Damian
Yes, It’s about winning. No question. But it’s not black and white. It’s about the perception of winning which is, realistically, about doing better than you did before.
Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal might all improve their playing standard 100% and all four spend £500 million in January, yet only one can win the title. Every team in the premiership can play as well as Chelsea yet, indisputably, three will be relegated. Most supporters understand this and if the only thing their team has achieved is an improvement then it might well be perceived as “success”.
Villa fans, generally, know we’re succeeding. They know we’re envied throughout the land for both our manager and our owner. But this success breeds expectations. And high expectation that is not quickly met breeds impatience and dissatisfaction. This is when you, Damian, and your excellent site will needed and tested.
Be resolute. Keep your powder dry and your eye fixed on the ultimate goal which is to win the Premiership. I tell you truly – if O’Neill and Lerner can’t do it for Villa then I doubt anyone can. Rejoice in our good fortune; it’s a good time to be a Villan.
The thing that we have to ask ourselves is do we want to do things the way Tottenham have, just to win the Carling Cup?
They have spent mega-bucks on some players who only wished to use them as a stepping stone to bigger things, while bringing in a load of players for fair fees and on fair wages who hardly play?
I'm sure success will come our way if we are patient and I for one would rather O'Neill did things the way he is now instead of trying to rush it.
Tottenham have tries to rush it by spending money in every window, their fans have got expectant and now look where they are.
churchil
i'm glad you replied, because there was something else i wanted to add, which i'll do in a minute ...
but i agree, it's not as simple as black and white, however show me something you think is black and white and unless it is black and white there is a very strong chance that it isn't
but to draw your attention to the 'only one team winning the title' thing. i just want aston villa to be one of those teams that have a chance. all the supporters of those four teams you mentioned believe, at the start of the season that they have a chance of winning the league. when i was a kid i also believed we had a chance and i think we're in a wonderful position right now to kick on and take it to that level
but having a non-executive director who is here specifically for pr and him spinning it and so many buying in to it is, i think, disrespectful
but, to what i wanted to say in response to your initial comment about the 'authority of this site'. that authority, if there even is any, comes from individual opinion and this site isn't going to tow any line. we're not going to suck up to krulak or anybody from the club and if i have an opinion that lerner is only here for the money and what he can get out of the club and that the pr machine he brought with him is all bullshit, thats my opinion. but go into the forum - opinions are varied and we dont all agree
when we had o'leary i was slagging him off for two seasons before the majority started to lay off me but almost every week when people started to see what i was posting on the pitch, those numbers grew ...
when i started the petition to have ellis, ansell and taylor removed the night after we were humiliated by birmingham city it took several weeks and the help of all the other aston villa sites (this blog wasn't around then) for it to gain numbers and exposure
if there is any authority in this site then it's because we dont follow the party line and that others tend to agree but are maybe not so vocal
Damian
I absolutely agree that we need to be one of those teams that are considered to have a chance of the title. At the moment that is limited to the top four and unfortunately it will continue to be that way for the obvious reason. Only four clubs go into CL and the extra revenue and ‘player incentive’ that generates will always set that four apart. The “top 4” is never going to be the “top5”.
This is what the fuss is about and, to be fair, clubs, fans and players know that the real achievement is to be in that top drawer as opposed to winning domestic cups.
I wasn’t aware of your involvement in the “Ellis era” so, if you were influential in the outcome then, belatedly, I offer my compliments. This must also mean that your site here must carry some weight and authority and to me it’s fairly obvious that it does. That’s why I’m disappointed sometimes. There may well come a time when you will need to spend that position and power to get something done at the club. If you spend it now on these minor issues how much will be left in the bank? I’m not asking you to suck up to anyone – just to be prudent about how you dispose of your capital.
Enough complaining. I can see you love the club and are devoted to its success. If I can find my way to the forum maybe I’ll give it a go (I think I tried a while ago and found it confusing. It’s a function of old age I’m afraid.). There hasn’t been as many posts here as there were a month or two ago – are they all at the forum?
Elbowing our way into the top 4 and displacing one of the incumbents is a Herculean task. The fascinating thing for me is watching how O’Neil and his assistants go about their business and achieve their ends. O’Neill’s performance as manager is as compelling as the matches themselves. Or is it just me?
I’ve just re-read my previous post. That sentence should read: “...your excellent site will BE needed...”
Lets petition for Barry out Damian. He has been useless so far this season, Milner or Sidwell in for him in a heart beat. Gabby is one of the most frustrating players ever to put on the Villa shirt. That goal vs Wales was fantastic, like his first match this season vs Man C, but when will he learn that he has to work for it. We need someone to push Gabby, maybe Heskey would be a beneficial addition for several reasons, but to let him start week in and week out means he will again get complacent, rather like Barry really.
What's a league for? Why do we play in a league? To win it of course! Or, failing that, to finish as high as possible in the league. The cups are just window dressing. There is only ONE champion each year. THAT must be our aim.
im starting to think o'dreary was right, reading this post makes me think we are fickle.
get behind the villa and stop talking claptrap about a team that are doing the best in a decade
Does anyone fancy Sidwell for a start on saturday? Hes scored for the reserves tonight. Prob be on the bench, but worth a punt t some point. I also believe its time for Milners first start and please do us a favour and drop Reo-coker!
churchil
it wasn't this site that started the petition to get ellis and ansell out, it was me all by myself the day after we lost to birmingham city. it was with the help of sites likes holteenders, villa talk, heroes and villans and football 365 that got it exposure and ultimately what got me started in this blog - from the petition, jonathan fear got a few others involved and vfc was formed and the rest is history.
but if the site carries weight, it's because of the people that visit it and contribute. i'm just a facilitator in funnelling that communication
and deep down we all believe villa are about to break into the top 4 but because of the years of promises we're damaged goods. lerner doesn't have as many chances as he would have done if we didn't have ellis for so many years and i just think rather than talk about 5 year plans they shouldn't say anything and simply let the results speak for themselves ..
askpaul68
ofcourse we're fickle, but that is our right. the thing o'leary did wrong was say it out loud. it's something a manager should never say to the supporters of the club he is managing ...
ronvilla
i think he'll be on the bench
To be fair the goal of every premiership team is to get a top 4 finish and play in the champions league, as it is the be all and end of high class football, I'd take that anyday over the achievements of Spurs and Portsmouth in the cups last year.....

I'd love a top 4 finish this season but not because I think it is an achievement in its own right but it does mean we will be able to attract the type of player that we struggle to get now.
Damian, i think your comment about Milner is very much black and white and you have read to little into it.
of course the lad is desperate to play, you see it every time he comes off the bench, why would he want to cause a fuss early doors in his villa career by 'moaning' about being on the bench?
it would be a rash move when under Martin oneil and i should imagine that MON has already spoken to him regards his lack of starting berth.
Once again i will also mention whilst ranting!
Gabbys problem is not he's been starved of playing next to a top class forward like big John, his issue seems to lie in the fact that there is no real competetion for his place.
im not being funny, bit if you were playing for a good premier side, scoring a goal every two games or so on average this season so far, and you look over to the bench and see Marlon Harewood. what would you do?
Now don't get me wrong, i love Marlon he is the epitomy of a hard working player, unfotunately you just dont see the end result from him enough times.
Anyway as i said if you were Gabby, at the minute you could afford to be lazy and keep your place.
If MON bought a world class striker, he would not just get one, he would get two! Gabbys game would be pushed to the next level then.
