Petrov a flop: Don't make me laugh

Wednesday, 29 November 06, 10:40 AM · Comments (2)

I've taken time out from posting on here as I seemed to spend all my time doing it but I felt obliged to set the record straight today. What exactly is Jamie1967 thinking by suggesting Petrov is a flop?

First off, I'm not unimpressed with Petrov. Every player takes time to settle in at a new club and he's got to find his feet. He's getting closer and I have no doubt that in the second half of the season we'll start to see the reasons why Martin O'Neill brought him in.

However, I don't expect us to see the best of Petrov until next season when we'll have a few more players, can play a consistent formation and hopefully have a more consistent starting eleven.

To top it all off and I think I speak for most Aston Villa supporters when I say this, I have absolutely every confidence in Martin O'Neill.

I don't want to start a war but Jamie1967 also has to remember that moving from the Scottish Premier League to the English Premiership is like Petrov moving up a division.

Celtic are a great side and a very strong side but week in week out they're playing teams that probably wouldn't last in the Championship.

If Celtic were playing in the Premiership I doubt Petrov would have left but let's be serious, any footballer who wants to kick on to the next level if given the opportunity would leave Scotland for England every day of the week.

I don't like to think the SPL is below the Premiership but sadly it's true.

The Premiership isn't a great division these days- I was at QPR v Sunderland last night and that was a great game of attacking football with some slick passing moves. It was better than half the stuff on Match of the Day last Saturday...

To an extent, I agree with Matthew - but let's also be honest: in the home games against both Boro and City, Petrov has looked a player struggling for both form and confidence. The difference might have been made by a few inches: I suspect that if his great free kick had crossed the line in first half injury time last night, he would have attacked the second half with all guns blazing. As it was he looked pretty forlorn to me, and certainly not the playmaker we know he can be. I'm not sure I wouldn't give the lad a rest and reward Davo for a couple of good outings from the bench.
