PMP: Aston Villa go third, James Milner surprises even me and come on Spurs

Sunday, 08 February 09, 05:05 AM · Comments (108)

It was an exceptionally good result yesterday that showed quite a few people that we mean business this season and that we are capable of it. Us going third because Chelsea failed to score at home against Hull, was just the icing on the cake.

The Papers

Geoff Sweet, News of the World: "James Milner's name has been a little overshadowed in Villa’s surge towards the Champions League but he looks ready to beam off the billboards now. Yesterday he took charge of a seventh consecutive away Premier League victory and scarcely put a foot wrong."

Jonathan Northcroft, The Sunday Times: "The second goal — via Gabriel Agbonlahor — was not scored until the fourth official was raising his board to signal stoppage time, but Villa’s victory should have been sealed much earlier, not least when James Milner pulled his shot wide of the far post from just four yards out. This was his only blemish.

His play was clever, skilful, penetrative and enhanced by physical commitment and good positioning — a textbook exposition of the modern wide role. In the first half, Milner scored in eye-opening style. Gareth Barry tapped him a short corner and from the edge of the box, at an angle from which he wasn’t expected to shoot, he arrowed the ball between keeper Paul Robinson and Morten Gamst Pedersen on the far post."

Guy Hodgson, The Independent: "Maybe the question needs to change. Instead of wondering whether Aston Villa are good enough to break into the top four the query should be who is going to stop them? This was their seventh successive away victory – a club record – and such is their momentum, Arsenal might not catch them and Chelsea, who were overtaken yesterday, have every reason to be anxious."

Player Ratings

You don't have to be a genius to figure out who the man of the match was and not only did he score, but he as good as saved us from conceding a goal too and with 27 successful passes and only 5 unsuccessful ones, it's not difficult to see why he won the accolade.

So, not to disappoint, here are the payer ratings and opinion, from GonzoAvfc this week.

The Brad: 7 – nothing to do was ready if needed
Carlos Cuellar: 6.5 – did okay while he made few good tackles
Curtis Davies: 7.5 – simply solid
Zat Knight: 8 – again solid, bit more to do than Davies though
Luke Young: 7.5 – solid good runs up the pitch and good balls to Webcam
Jimmy Milner 8.5 MOTM – cracking game. great on the ball, good passing and crossing. good goal.
Stiliyan Petrov: 7 – never really in the game didn’t do anything wrong though
Gareth Barry: 7.5 – lead the team well some clever passes
Webcam Ashley: 7 - would have been more if not for diving, few good crosses got back well
FAF Agbonlahor: 8 - good game, great goal, was a danger throughout should have scored more
Emile Heskey: 7.5 – won the ball up field good lay offs, lead defenders away from goal

You can't really disagree with what GonzoAvfc is scoring and saying here, so I won't.

Final Analysis

End of the day, the league table doesn't lie and we are third, clear of Chelsea and a long way clear of Arsenal who may struggle today.

We are exactly where we deserve to be and based on the performance yesterday, against a team that were in a good little run, we may even surprise a few more by the end of this season.

I've really got nothing to add that I didn't write yesterday and if I'm honest, it's because my head hurts and all I want to go do is drink some coffee and have some cheese on toast.

Damian, this is the second day in a row you've slid a cheeky food advertisment into the blog. Yesterday after reading I went downstairs and made myself a bacon sandwich. Now you have me craving cheese on toast.. but i'm at work till 6 so i'm going to have to go without...

Very happy with the result yesterday and glad Milner is pulling off some good performances. Just hoping this little England outing doesn't result in any injuries for us.

I think we are starting to make other teams feel quite nervous as we can attack from all angles. I'd just like us to be a bit more ruthless in front of goal. The fact we are creating so many chances in games is just brilliant.

I hope MON focuses purely on the league and tells the lads not to worry too much about the other competitions. I think this would be good reverse psychology because it will allow them to relax (mentally) more in cup games, and yield dividends.

I really hope the hammers get a result against Man.U and the spuds get one over Arsenal. What a perfect week-end.

Good afternoon everyone, how happy are the Villa fans today!?

I just thought i'd come on and give Mr. Luke Young some well deserved credit. What a signing, MON really did well on this one. And its earned him and England call. Playing out of position as well, for me he has made a real difference and could prove to be our star buy.

Anyone agree?

I don't think that matters. If we make champions League Barry won't leave, he has been quoted as saying he wants to do it with us and if were there he wont be leaving.

Were also right in the mix this year and I doubt a move is crossing his mind whatsoever, so no messing up of his head this year when the fat man comes sniffing around playing tap tap tappy.

Yesterday I saw reasonable premiership defenders twisting, turning and falling over as a player ran at them.

Who was that player?
Ash? Gabby? Milner?

No, you're right, ALL THREE OF THEM.
No wonder teams don't fancy playing us.

Sorry to be smug but I said that you could not judge Milner on his crossing until we had a target man in the team, also changing back to 4 4 2 has helped him a lot to, and Damian I know your a fan of 4 5 1 but I'm sure you can't argue that playing 442 lets us dominate opposition much more effectively.

Fair play, Damo, giving credit where credit's due. Really nice seeing the lad come on, justifying MON's faith and perhaps even the price tag. And he's so young, full of commitment and hard work to boot. Such an easy player to cheer for.

I'm still terribly nervous about it all, but how much fun is this? The England call-ups are worrisome, too, but so well deserved. With Luke Young even getting back into the frame, it's easy to see why MON is God.

That Barry story is junk, just recycling the question which has obviously remained open. Nothing has brought it up but a journo trying to be clever.

Also, I though Gardner did quite well, all things considered. I'm not his biggest fan, but he was given a tough job, acquitted himself well, and had a couple really nice little passages of play that showed me what others see in him.

Such a wonderful ride, with Acorns on our shirts, the future England nucleus in claret and blue, and Arsenal and Chelski where they belong...

Come on you Villa boys!!!!!

I agree.
We've looked a lot more of a threat and the midfield is much more effective
I bet Sidwell is gutted.
I can't see how he fits in at all now, except as a replacement for Barry?

Great result yesterday, im amazed at how well Heskey has fitted in already, he looks like he has been playing with Gabby for much longer than a few weeks. Definatly looks worth the £3.5mn especially in todays transfer climate.

What does FAF Agbonlahor mean? Is that his new nickname? If so what does it stand for.

Ash Young had a quiet first half yesterday, and in other games we would have struggled because of that but yesterday we didnt because Milner was creating on the other side. Young started to look more dangerous in the second half. Imagine what we can do when both players are playing at their best.

Overall great performance, 7 straight away wins is some record and like others I cant quite believe how well we are doing, although given MON's record its not that suprising. It is a great time to be a Villa fan and I think we definatly deserve it after a few bad years in the recent past.

And with Arsenal looking to be holding on for a point the gap could be 7 or 8 points by the end of the day, that is a very nice cushion to have and we are also 11 points clear of Everton who look to be playing very well. Great times indeed!

when i watched the game yesterday, i said to the person with me that we were playing with two up front .. he said to me that we weren't.

i've watched the first half again today and if you watch it again you'll see heskey was always dropping back whenever blackbrun had the ball - in essence offering up another man in midfield

when we went forward with any midfielder he was always up .. so playing the role of a striker told to come back and help out. whereas Gabby really only dropped back a little from his strikers position

formations are always going to be tough to call, but i'd say for most part (in the first half anyway, as i've watched that again) we were playing 5 in midfield

if you click here:

you'll see what i mean with the gabby v emile chalkboard from yesterday - as in passes made. emile is much deeper than gabby

That's a fair point and I think I commented how Heskey plays too deep for my liking. I don't think he's effective in midfield at all, but as you suggest, he's probably under orders to just make a nuisance of himself in the middle. Seems pointless to me, as he doesn't have the pace for when we break??????

But what the hell do I know? We're winning and that's all that counts :D
Not sure if I read it on here or some other forum, but I don't see the concern about our up coming fixtures.
In fact, after having seen the remaining games, I'm even more confident of top 4, especially having seen Arse have very little to offer (I know they were down to 10 men). We'd have thrashed Spurs today, even with 10 men, imo.

We can all laugh at the Arsenal fans, although how could Modric miss that chance at the end?!

I know this is mean, but am I the only person who wants to see Villa make the Champions League and then sell Barry to whoever misses out on the Champions League (in a perfect world Liverpool)! At this point I think Martin O'Neill would find the perfect replacement for him!

What a fantastic game for Villa yesterday. And how about Big Sam's comments.
"They were the first team since I've been here that was better than us. They were good with the ball and even better without it. We didn't deserve anything from the game."
That says it all about a performance at a place like Ewood Park. Absolute class from the Claret and Blue! ManU, Liverpool that object getting larger in your rear-view mirrors is the claret-and-blue army!

Yes, that's mean mate, imo.
If we get CL, Barry won't go anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I slated him blind at the time and haven't forgiven him for going to the press (I think he was misguided by his agent though).

MON has said "give me this season and you can go if we don't make it to the CL".

Im going to sign the praises of those who don't often get it. Curtis, Knight - what a partnership it's becoming. Immense!. L.Young, solid, love this player, totally understated but effective. Gardner, don't usually like him but tidy on the right and nearly created a goal.

Petrov was immense also, great distribution. In conlcusion. Immense!

Rafa has lost it. He's trying to unsettle Barry again, knowing that his form is one (of many) reasons why Villa are breathing so closely down their necks....

He can't get his grubby little Spanish waiter mitts on him until the summer anyway, and by then he might not have the same incentive as last year.

GB:"Hello, who's that, oh Rafa sorry I thought it was Manuel from Fawlty Towers"
RB:"Bally, eetz meee, Rafa Benitwez. I wanna you come play Championez leagues for Litterpool".
GB:"Ah Rafa, sorry, I thought you'd realised after Villa finished above you in the league that you could go shove your offer up that tight little Spanish squeaky bum of yours!. Actually while your here, my Boss was wondering if Stevie wanted to come play for a beter team this year?"

My guess is "I told you Blackburn were shit, didn't I?" :D

Totally agree, but i dont think we can win it i would love it but i cant see anybody stopping Man u, but i really dont think 2nd is a dream any more i really believe that Liverpool are the worse team in the top 6 take away Gerrard and Tores and compare there squad with the other teams, there shit...

Quick point... 3rd is good enough for direct qualification to group stages - rules have changed for next year. :P

Barry pissed everyone off in the summer but if we fail to finish in the top 4 he can go with my blessing, he is a top player and he deserves to try the champions league, havin said that we will finish in the top 4 and if that is true there is no chance he will leave not in a million years.

Well put. Barry's played really well and has built bridges in the best way, really.

Rafa will be looking to unsettle because of our threat to them. MON - I think - has only really revealed the professionalism of himself and Barry and hinted at the respect and affinity between them.

I suspect that MON will say "you are free to go" and Barry might well say "thanks, but I'd like to stay". That outcome would be great but this was an important year and Barry has played his part massively so if doesn't go that way, fair enough.

All we need is for Liverpool to drop 1 point. After that second place is ours for the losing. It's in our own hands after that as we play them and can make up the 3 point difference. Or we win some games 3 or 4-0 to catch up the goal difference. We're after our highest finish since 92-93
Come on you Villa boys!!!!!

I've spent several hours today looking at the league table. It looks marvellous, doesn't it? The progress we have made is frankly stunning and the next sign of how far we have come will be when Fergie starts trying to get to MON with the old Jedi mind tricks. Don't think he'll have much joy there though...MON has been round the block a few times.

Players not in the starting line up for one reason or another yesterday: Carew, Laursen, Bouma, Reo Coker, Sidwell, Gardner, Shorey, Delfouneso. Ok, there are bound to be some players injured at any one point in the season, but at least there are now some talented players outside the team that led us onto the pitch yesterday. Arsenal in particular seem to be finding it difficult to put out a full side of good players every week. One of MONs skills has been to select adaptable players (or to train them to be adaptable) so that even when we lose key players, other good players are able to provide cover until they return. Maybe this will enable us to operate a smaller squad than would normally be thought reasonable?

Agreed.
Fergie just winds the foreigners up and they bite everytime :D
I can see MON's answer now;

"SAF might think that and of course he'd be dead right, having been there and done it all. We'll just be doing our best and see how we go".

Having said that, I think SAF has loads of respect for MON and vice-versa, stemming from the fact that both have played the British game.

'From acorns, oaks will grow'...how apt....MON is a craftsman, his record with Leicester and Celtic prove that. He sees potential then he takes it and shapes it. He's always said that we should expect nothng much for the first few seasons, not to have high hopes too soon, that he was here to build a top 6 challenging team but it would take time. And here we are...3rd n the EPL - not just because Arsenil, Chelski and and Lidlpool aren't playing at their best - but because we are now a quality side built through foresight, thought and encouragement. I wasn't expecting anything like this for at least another season or two! Every one of our boys has the hunger that MON's instilled in them through his mangerial and people skills - you can see that in every game. They have pride and they want to PLAY for Villa! Ok, we've had some 'off days', but with the tiny squad we have & the amount of extra games played with the Intertoto, UEFA etc and the travelling entailed, there's bound to be some heavy legs. Admittedly, i was a little concerned when we didn't sign anyone in the transfer window - some cover for future injuries, suspensions etc - but we've coped magnificently so far with major losses like Bouma, Carew and Laursen to injuries and Young's suspension. How many teams - with bigger squads - would have coped so well?? Our boys are adaptable - Milner, L Young, Reo-Coker being switched to positions they weren't bought in to play but putting in superb performances. Us having to adapt to 4-5-1 with Carew being out & it leading to Gabby's epiphany - who would have thought? MON's brought out the best in them and I thank God for both him and Lerner and all they've brought to Aston Villa. 6 players in the England squad, worries me slightly because of our hectic fixture list but I can't help but be proud. Capello's not just chosen them because of other choices having injuries but because of their qaulity & consistency - they GEL together. No egos just eagerness. Allelujah =D

It's a great point you make. MON has selected very athletic players...there's pace, strength, size. And apart from Gabby, they seem smart enough as well. Most of them can do a job almost anywhere on the pitch.

Third in the league, still in the FA Cup, the UEFA Cup just around the corner, and SIX of our players in the next England team...

Will those people who contribute to this blog amd continually criticize MON and/or our Villa players please stop!!!

The word "fan" is short for FANATIC...to be a "supporter" means to provide support. Surely if one is a fan, or a supporter, of the Mighty Aston Villa we must ALL be positive, proud of the team's achievements, and just a little bit one-eyed in favour of our beloved club!

Come on fellow Villans...cheer OUR team and do so with extreme claret and blue bias. Who knows if we can, or if we can't...but isn't it fantastic watching this wonderful and exciting season unfold?

We have 13 fixtures left and from that I can see the Villa take at least 26 of them so on 77 points we should easily qualify for the CL.

Don't be silly ;) .
How inappropriate of you to talk some sense on this site =D .

Can I just say, I was very pleased to see Gabby get a goal today. I think for all that Milner done in the game, seeing Gabby on the scoresheet was a fitting reward for the burden he carried leading the team from the front solely for so long and then coping a little bit of, at times, harsh criticism for some of the bloggers here.

What good times these are!! Just looking at our next fixture, and a win would really put a CL place in the cement you would think. A 5pt cushion over an out-of-form, almost worn out squad would be more then enough for me, for us to go on and finish in at least the top4.

Onto Barry, and I'd like to live in my own little bubble where I think that even if MON let him leave he'd want to stay. I know football is a business but it really would be nice to see. I think the only team that could sway him would probably be ManUtd, but I can't see him going there, what with all the midfielders they already have.
