Pre-season friendly: Real Balompédica Linense 1 Aston Villa 1

Wednesday, 06 August 08, 10:03 PM · Comments (31)

It's only a warm up match to the UEFA Cup and Premier League, which all starts next week, but John Carew came on for the last fifteen minutes or so, to save the blushes.

Some good news from tonight is that Curtis Davies played for 90 minutes and from my man on the ground, that really was all the good news from tonight.

The next match is on Friday against Marbella, which is sure to be a little tougher than tonight and hopefully it will be a better result.

No more news I'm afraid apart from that. I'm now off for a beer and I think I may have a sausage or two in the fridge from earlier, which I'm going to slice up and put into a sandwich with some home made mint sauce.

The news about Davies is very good. If we do get Shorey and possibly Hoyte we will have a very good defence. Interesting to hear that Salifou has had a couple of good games too. Maybe there is a good team struggling to break out of the shadow cast by the Barry saga?

i cant believe that people can be so optomistic about villa at the moment!!

we are in dire straits guys!!!

this is worse than last year!!! bring back the gregory days!!! i miss those awesome players signing for villa!!! merson, dublin, collymore, angel. gregory could attract players but mon cant fucking organise a piss up in brewery!!!!

please mr lerner, can u please sign some players yourself as mon doesnt like the hassle!!
i bet that shorey will end up at portsmouth!! how the fuck can portsmouth beat us in the transfer market? i will tell u why, its because they have a charming and intelligent manager in the transfer market!!! we have a manager who just wants to sit next to allan hansen and linekar to boost his tv career!!

i am panicking just like 90% of other villa fans, and it has now got stupid and embarassing!!

bring in martin jol!!! class manager

I just lost the comment I was working on, so please excuse if two similar comments appear.
I'll shorten it a bit this time...just to say that no wonder I couldn't find out anything about the team we played tonight...i thought they were called La Linea.
1-1 is very worrying and it seems ou saviour at the mo, Mr Carew has saved the day again.
This is getting embarrassing now.

Anyway, if anyone would like to see Brad Guzan in action, he should be on BBCi (press the red button) tomorrow morning playing for USA v Japan in the Olympics.
It appears he is no1 for the olympic team from what i've just read and will not meet up with the lads until after:
Sun 10th - USA v Netherlands
Weds 13th - Nigeria v USA
Sat 16th - Quarter Finals ?
Tue 19th - Semi Finals ?
Fri 22nd - Bronze Medal Game
Sat 23rd - Gold Medal Game

All games should be covered on BBCi (press the red button !)

UP THE VILLA :(

Hi everybody:

First of all, excuse my english. I´m from La Línea (Spain) and this night a saw the match. First 45 mn, Linense could make 2 or 3 goals. Aston Villa only played like a great team the last 15 minutes, when Carew played.

Today Villa was luckly. Linense plays in 2ª division B (like 3th division), same that Marbella.

In these pre-seasons mathes, great teams sometimes don´t run. Anyway, Aston Villa could win finally. It was a pretty event. La Línea (Linense) is very very near(frontier) Gibraltar and there was 4.000 people at stadium.

Hope this year Villa can be up in the Premier.

P.D.: Last year a visited Birmingham, ¡Cadbury world!... A beautiful city.

Villa Villa, I think you're officially the first person who wants to sack MON after a couple of pre-season games!! Yes, we're all expecting more signings, but c'mon! 6th last season & we're in the UEFA next week! I know, let's sack MON & get McLeish in!! Have a word with yourself!!

Surely the object of these preseason matches are to practice tactics and improve fitness levels, and not to get that involved in scoring as to risk injuries!....Have faith you doubters!

Yeah, bring back Josef Venglos, okay so we didn't do quite as well but at least we always brought in interesting sounding players under him!!!! Besides, who wants success on the pitch when you can have success in the transfer market.

In my (and probably most others) view a 1-1 draw to a team in the spanish 3rd division is not acceptable! Previously MON has come out and said results don't matter and the games are only to build up fitness. how much time do they need?? with it being so close to the start of the season i fail to see how anyone can be optimistic. NRC has come out saying this trip to spain was to intergrate the new signings, all two of them. omitting guzan.
Some light at the end of the tunnel though, Mr Lerner is ready to spend £30m. didn't he state that the money was there since the he bought the club? i am confused and angry. Is MON not spending cause he's a shrewd business man or is that he just dosen't like spending in excess of £10m?
Being only 18 i only properly remember the 00/01 season onwards, so before you all start having a go at me, i'd just like to add my opinion. MON is truly naive when it comes to the transfer market, we need players and fast. don't get me wrong MON is God to me, after the later years of o'leary i think anyone would look like a god compared to him. he needs to put his money where his mouth is and actually start buying some players rather than talking about buying them.
This said villa for top 5 finish and to progress futher than everton in the uefa cup. ;D UTV

I posted this yesterday - take it as you read it
Off topic and hardly an exclusive but I've heard that Nick Shorey will sign for us, possibly tomorrow afternoon if they can get it done in time but more likely Friday. Like it or not, it's a signing and wouldn't be a bad one IMO. Not sure how reliable my source is as not had anything from them in the past - we'll wait and see!!!
OK, only a run out but we've not looked good since May. With a weakened squad all isn't looking that good. I think the latest people we're linked with are more panic buys - Ok players nothing more. I'm not impressed with the direction the club seems to be moving in.

On the postitive - Davis back so we won't have to worry about Knight playing to much. Also that will mean MON won't have to do any work in getting a back up or sending his FANTASTIC SCOUTING NETWORK out to earn their money (They're a joke) Anybody can scout in the Premier League or Celtic! I'd get rid of the whole scouting system at Villa!

Just read from a number of sources that we are on the brink of signing luke young and nicky shorey, i retract some of my previous comments about Mon's transfer activity although my opinion that MON is a touch on the naive side remains. it is not possible for the players to gel fully to get a formidable defence this close to the start of the seson but i remain positive that other teams would take a draw against us even before a ball has been kicked. Well the transfer policy seems to be 'build from the back' at the moment! 2 keepers, looks like Young & Shorey will come in too. Young is dependable, can cross and scored a wonder goal (i think against Tottenham) last season!! However i hope the fee is a little closer to £3.5m rather than £5m as he's 29 now. I'd prefer Miguel, but £11m is the price, which is a bit of a joke. Hopefully, Young will have some really strong competition in that area soon anyway!!

Receptionist: Good morning Age Concern, how can I help you?

MON: Yes good morning there young lady, may I speak to the manager please?

REC: One moment please. ***"Scream if you wanna go faster" by Geri Haliwell interlude music***

MON: Scream, scream, scream if you wanna go faaasteeeer la la lala lala la la..

Manager: Barry McCharity speaking, how can I help you.

MON: La la..Yes hi, my name's Martin O'Neill. I'm calling to enquire about your "full back healing solutions" offer.

MAN: Sure, let me explain Mr.O'Neill. When we're older our backs often let us down..

MON: Yes it's true, my one big trouble at the back's called Zat. A big, still, dopey, bling bling lump I tell you, ahh why did I read those scouting notes left behind by O'Leary...

MAN: Zat? O'Leary? I never heard of the conditions. Anyway, at Age Concern we're offering a free-of-charge full hour with a specialist so that..

MON: A specialist? Do you mean you'll send a specialist to our training ground? How is he gonna help us find a full back?

MAN: Sorry sir, I'm a little confused. Do you perhaps go to the gym and refer to it as a training ground?

MON: No, not the gym, the training ground. Are you going to help us find our full backs? Because I sent my scouts to find them but they've lost their way in a Redditch one way system on the 10th of June and I've not heard from them since.

MAN: Mister O'Neill, are you the Aston Villa manager by any chance?

MON: Yes of course, how can you help me to approach Luke Young of Charlton?

MAN: Middlesbrough, Mister O'Neill. Luke Young now plays for Middlesbrough. He's an average, honest full back with basic tecnique and limited skills. He's probably available for 3/4 millions, will not improve the overall quality of your present squad but will offer you some breathing space from the fans. In short, quantity over quality.

MON: Why thank you, what an impressive report. Wasn't that an impressive report, Randy? Anyway, no wonder Charlton put the phone down on me. Now, please tell me more about this Shorey lad.

MAN: Mister O'Neill, I'm a little busy. Perhaps you'd like us to send you a "Full Back Solutions" leaflet?

MON: Please, but hurry as I only have 24 days left.

MAN: 24 days? Erm yes ok. I'm sorry I've got to go, regards to Mister Lerner. Goodbye, Mister O'Neill. *Click*

LERNER (in the background): Whoooo's da bitch Krulak, look Martin, he's typing more fanny goo on another Aston Villa blog..dumbass Krulak hahahaha

MON: Hmmm just a moment Randy. *Press redial*

Receptionist: Good morning Age Concern, how can I help you?

MON: Yes hi there young lady, may I listen to Geri Haliwell again, please?

curtis davies did play well for you villa but untill carew came on villa looked unimaganative and unable to keep up with a boyent la linea team hoton there heals.
all thats left to say is well done to la linea for a stirling performance

Forget about the friendlies, they mean nothing apart from a fitness workout - we aren't going to go at it hammer and tongs with a Mickey Mouse bunch of players and risk more injuries are we? Hopefully the rumours that Shorey and Young will sign are true, ok not the best quality but they are used to the Prem and will settle in straight away - IMO I think this is what MO wants, rather than risk an expensive foreign signing who may take half a season to get used to the pace, etc. Would be nice to have 2 more before I go to Egypt on Monday, and I bloody hope they have TVs and Internet!! Hit it on the head there kieran. You just can't please some people though. Signings are more important than success to some people, and now we're hopefully completing the signing of two quality experienced premiership full-backs and there'll still be those crying out for blood because those players are English and known quantities when some people will prefer unknown entities at high prices, because of course that worked so well for Newcastle last year.
