Pre-season friendly: Walsall 2 Aston Villa 3

Tuesday, 22 July 08, 03:37 PM · Comments (38)

What can be said about this game that will interest you? Well, I guess the news is that Gareth Barry started, Marlon Harewood was captain and Barry got booed.

Not everyone booed Barry but it was heard by all and that really must be enough for the player to know the feelings of some Aston Villa fans. Pity it ended this way.

Well, the result was, a result. It really doesn't matter what the result was, it was mostly about getting a run out and trying to lift the fitness of some of the players.

For the record, Shaun Maloney scored twice and Wayne Routledge got the winner.

One of the annoying things for me, having listened to it on BBC West Midlands, was having to listen to Jack Woodward in the background. I didn't renew this year for Villa World, mostly because of his annoying voice and now I'm forced to listen to it again when not paying for the privilege.

I know it's not just me and I really don't understand why the club continue with him. Maybe, when the club finally get a new CEO this will be one of the things they look at.

Now, we've got Saturday to look forward to and hopefully a few goals and a convincing display.

Surely Maloney deserves a run out the weekend now?

Shaun and Routledge both. . .and after the way he played last week, that means Gabby out. Or a three back set up that gets Knight out of the picture.

Got to drive back to London now as i continue to watch this club wherever. MON get the transfers done, Barry speak to your love Rafa do the deal and go, and to the fans who didn't give the judas the boo's hang your heads in shame. Without MON guts our club would be dying now so show him your support and to the man who tried to destroy us for 40 pieces of silver show him that we detest him and will never forget.

i know this doesnt bear anything on this article but i am getting completely racked off now with the lack of activity in this so called transfer window i always check the official site and on here whilst at work and what surprose surprise nothing happening! He then plays down the Zigic link and says he not interested at all!Gonna get myself down the bookies and see if they will take bets on villa to start the season without a rightback and pile on it!I hope i am wrong but every other club seems to wrap things up so much quicker than MON and RL i think the club should come out and tell us what the F**k is going on or open a blog on there so they can read all villa fans opinions on the lack of activity that is going on coz they really need a wake up call!i am villa through and through and renewed my season ticket this year and hopefully will be travelling round europe with the boys but IMO we will struggle on saturday at VP we look so disjointed at the back and on theright its unbelievable. Any takers for Ricardo Quaresma from porto as his agent has revealed its the bestb time for him to move on!!!

had to get that out guys its been eating away at me all day!

Cheers

Anyone that boos a player in a VIlla shirt is an idiot, I don't give 2 shits what he does, when he's on that field playing for the club he should be treated as a Villa player. Anyone that feels strongly about loyalty and supports the club, should make their feeling known off the pitch. It's the same mentality of fans that boo england players from teams other than their clubs, brainless…

Wow another two goals conceded! With this defence we are gonna be on the TV all the time! Who cares about Barry he's just a player. You really think most of the others are any more principled or loyal?

We have had a poor pre season really and need to sign players asap.

This saturday is a massive game but it shouldnt be. If we had already done the business in the transfer market we would be home and dry by now.

You see how we nicked the winner in the last minutes of the match! I do think walsall were the better side for most of the match though, but 2 be fair half the first team didn't play and we still won? So thats something good i suppose?
They changed their goalkeeper and the new guy lost them the match! Unlucky

Maloney And The Hare to start Saturday, Agbonbon to the bench

Did playing Barry really teach him a lesson? He was poor tonight and probably wanted to be anywhere but there, if their's 15m on the table we should take it quick....

Get on the phone tonight!!!!!

For those commenting about goals conceded etc.
They should know that there were no regulars in the squad.
Barr Barry, the closest thing was Marlon and Maloney.

Also, as the night went on, the boos turned to claps for GB, and almost all clapped him as he left the field.
May I add, He played well tonight.

Just got back from the game and thought i needed to come on and say just how well i thought some of our youngters played tonight. I think Delfounso, Baker and especially Bannan are going to be stars of the future.

And just a good word for Salifou, thought he did a better job at right back than i've seen Gardner do yet!

On another note I took my 4yr old to his 1st game .... he loved it so another Villain hooked for life

Salifou at RB? Good Lord.

Nigel Remote-Control needs to be captain next, he deserves one of his many shouts to be commands. I think he'd kick the rest of the squad up the arse, much more than Gareth Byebye ever did. If not him then give the captaincy to Wilf, the hardest worker on the pitch and most consistent players I've seen in a Villa shirt since... losing train of though, why didn't we sign Boulharouz as right back? He was class for Holland filling at rightback.

To the people who are using last nights game as a yard stick for saturday truly don't know much about what is actually happening. None of the team that played in Denmark on saturday played in last night's game. It was a reserve team with Barry. We had Parish in goal and Cieran Clark in defence both young up and coming players. So get real you muppets.

That's 7 goals conceded in our last 3 games now... I know not all of them have been competitive but still, it's sounding to me like we're going to struggle at the back this season just like we did last :(

Carvillan, you are getting a bit up yourself mate it was a joke anyway as it stands a few injuries and they WILL be playing in the first team this season.

I was there last night, and I have to admit I did give Barry a little piece of my mind and join in with the booing etc.
However the boo's subsided a little after about 30 mins of the game, when i believe most of the fans felt they had made their feelings clear.
When he was substituted, I never booed nor clapped him off, as i choose to stay silent, which I felt was more appropriate than keep getting on his back.
In light of all this, he actually played quite well, some good tracking back of players, tackles and several cross field passes that gave us a glimpse of what we will probably be missing next season!
Onto the game, Maloney was tricky, quick, dangerous and looked like he had a point to prove last night. The same goes for Routledge, looked confident and full of enthusiasm to get round the fullback. Crossing was good too, as we looked dangerous down both wings it was hard for the opposition to double up on either winger. However Salifou playing right back, not the ideal position for him!! (we haven't even got a youth player deemed good enough to play there!!!)
Overall, I know it was a friendly, but fairly decent performance, and for those who did go........WE WANT CLAYTON, WE WANT CLAYTON!!!
