Preview and Punt: Manchester United in the FA Cup, again

Friday, 04 January 08, 02:43 PM · Comments (22)

Manchester United are favourites to win this match and you can't blame the bookies for offering 7/2 on Villa, but I will be having some of that, as now is a good time for us to be playing them.

I say a good time because of two reasons. Firstly we're actually playing better football now and seem to have more direction and the second reason is based on averages; eventually we will have to beat them in the FA Cup again - the last time was in 1957!

So, I'm not going to dwell too much on the last time we played or last seasons same fixture. The past is the past and quite frankly having had such a poor record against United for a long time, it's not doing us any favours reverting back the League Cup final win or the result in 1957.

Instead, I'm going to look at the positives. We've got Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor both playing some very nice football. We've got a defence that are not only keeping goals out but are scoring them too.

We've got a midfield that is starting to gel and is possibly only missing a final piece or two and quite possibly Shaun Maloney starting who can create chances and take them, almost out of nothing. John Carew may also be back for this match and he'll be a handful for any defence.

For me, it's going to come down to us taking our chances. It seems like we are creating more and more each match and the performance against Spurs shows that even when defending and under pressure we can still create. Because of this and the event I think we may rise to the occasion.

My prediction therefore is an Aston Villa win and I will be betting on it. I've just got a good feeling after Spurs and the Christmas matches and no Aston Villa supporter can blame me for my optimism. On the other hand you can call me mad for betting on Aston Villa to win and tell me I should just leave the match alone.

My £10 banker bet this weekend is on Blackburn, Brighton, Chelsea and Everton. If it comes in it will pay £24.96. Instead of one other bet, I'm having two £5 bets. These are on Aston Villa and Reading which would pay out £157.50 and Swansea, Norwich and Chasetown, which would pay out £73.64.

That's it from me folks today, unless Aston Villa sign Wes Brown and Alan Hutton.

I say let them come, i have a tenner on the game tomorrow and will be there cheering them on in the stands. I agree that we are playing the best football we have played for years and can only hope that we have enough to see off united, has anyone seen uniteds team for tomorrow?

we need carew back or for MON to have sat moore down and told him his spurs performance will see him sold
i really hope sir alex thinks he'll get an easy ride seeing as villa park is their second home, if they underestimate us and put out a second string defence we'll do em

Whether Carew plays is the key for me. Fantastic player tho he is, I don't think Young has the beating of Evra just yet. Without Carew I can't see us having enough to unsettle their back four I'm afraid.

if Carew is back i would play the same system we did at chelsea an play usual back four melberg/ curtis / laursen / bouma play young on the left remember they have'nt got a natural rb ether i feel brown is better in the centre so that could be as just a good advantage, barry an reo in middle an put gabby on the right, an have big Carew an maloney in the middle because if ronaldo plys on the right the speed of gabby gettin back will help melberg out alot.

I really reckon we could do this, good luck for boys tomorrow !!

Carew doubtful to start. Didn't MON say a couple of weeks ago that Salifou is ready, and that we might see him soon? He would be a COMPLETE unknown for Utd to face! I'll put a tenner on Villa too.

i think we have nothin to lose againist utd. if we win then we are throu, obvious i know, but if they beat us then we can put all our efforts into the league while teams around us are keeping an eye on the fa cup. i would love to beat utd and get a cup run but defeat tomor mite help us reach for greater things eg, CL next season. anyway come on villa!! 2-1 villa. Barry (pen) young. rooney for them.

think way to us winning is keeping ronaldo quiet, he seems to be making utd tick atm, and he allways seems to score v us :(

Man Utd are going through there annual run of grinding out results now if villa can pop in a goal or two i think we'll have them as long as we can subdue ronaldo and saha.

for the first time ever, im gonna go against villa. i had the same feelin of optimism wen we played them at vp earlier this season, an we had a shockin 9 mins. my heart is burnin for a villa victory, but we always seem to come unstuck when we play man u. its almost as if we are too scared or freeze wen we play them. everyone needs to be firin tomoro no matter who fergie puts out. an im prayin carew is fit.
even tho ive just put in a negative comment, please please villa lets beat em. its been too long and i cant stand anymore man u victories against us. i cant stand man u.

I don't think we'll lose 4-1, put it that way. The key is keeping Ronaldo quiet as somebody else pointed out, which is next to impossible but if we give it our best shot then we may just scrape it. Gotta hate how past records are brought up within Football so often, do they really have any affect? It didn't stop Portsmouth from winning us at Villa Park did it. Now is a good time as any to break that record though and put it behind us.

Really hope we get a win but have a nasty feeling that we will lose 2-0. We seem to lack the belief against united and let them play their passing game all too easily. If we perform like we did in the second half against Arsenal then we could pull off an upset but we will have to play like that for 90 minutes. Hope Knight does not start, he makes too many silly errors which will be punished against united.

in years gone by certain managers would be telling players like melberg to give ronaldo a reducer,in other words slow him down a bit by giving him a tap on the ankle, big ron atkinson was well known for it and i think a few still do it to us now to carew and gabby mmmm i wonder i,m not going to make a match prediction because every time i do we lose. utv

If we win today, we have won the FA Cup and secured a european qualifying position. This is the game that makes or breaks us. We know United. This is our turning point, pivotal you might say. Win this and the rest of the league will walk in our dust. UTV

I wonder what the odds are that Ronaldo will dive and win a penalty? I would like to put some money on that. Let's hope there is a decent referee today.

Hi everyone and happy new year to you all.
My first comment for a while but here goes, hope i'm not sitting with egg on my face on Saturday night !
It's just that i too have a good feeling about today and wanted to tell you a little story about the last time i felt like this.
I can remember going into my local bookies in August 1995 o put a couple of quid on the gee gees. It was the opening day of the season and we had Man Utd.
I asked the gaffer of the bookies (a nose) what odds 3-1 to Villa would be. He pissed himself laughing and said 28/1.
His scoffing at the very idea meant that i only put a quid on it but i will always remember his face when i went in a few days later to collect my winnings !!
I reckon it will be a high scoring but close Villa win and with any luck, a Mr Kieran McGrath will be in the pound seats later on.
Good luck Villa, good luck Kieran for having the bottle and enjoy the game everyone.
UP THE VILLA ;) ;) ;)
