It's now the morning after the defeat and I don't normally look at reaction but 4-0 is a hammering and we went there with such hope.
Martin O'Neill said "We were well beaten. We have much work to do and we know that. We played here a couple of weeks ago and got off to a poor start but then played well. In the second half I thought Chelsea were really excellent and we were unable to cope with them."
Personally, at half time I still fancied our chances but with Laursen and Barry going off it appears to have been enough for Chelsea to kick on.

Jose Mourinho was in a confident mood after the match "We put out a strong side because we've always respected the Carling Cup. It was good game between two top Premiership teams. For us to control the game in the manner we did was very pleasing."
I don't think this result will effect league performances, Chelsea had something to prove last night after getting beat by Spurs last weekend. We've got Everton this Saturday and I expect a victory and I'll be throwing more money at it.
One interesting thing, for me anyway is that the official site have still not changed the spelling of Mertin to Martin on the home page. How long do you have to wait or how many times do they need to be told?
More reaction coming from Luke later today and no doubt you'll have a few things to say.

I'm not sure it's entirely fair to blame your second half collapse on the exit of Gareth Barry. You were getting stuffed from start to finish, and one Angel header wide shouldn't fool you otherwise.
Hope you don't mind a Chelsea fan popping in. I was at the game last night and agree with O'Neill to a degree. Not so sure about Laursen but when Barry went off we were definitely able to move your players around a bit more and the openings came eventually. Good crowd, great atmosphere, pity about the bottle, though.
To be honest, for £200m you should be playing like that week in week out, not just in a Carling Cup game.
Fair point. So for your £2m manager, can we expect you to collapse and spend the rest of the season fighting for your usual 12th place?
hi rob
better fighting for it than buying it ... more fun, don't you think?
anders, was that what you call fighting for it? villa were dreadful last night and were completely outplayed from start to finish. Can you not at leats admit that?
yes. chelsea were better. but give me £200m and i'll put a group of players together that could beat us and they'll probably win the title because chelsea wont win i t this season
we got beat by the better team on the night but chelsea have notning to be proud of they bought all there sucess and will never have the respect they think there entitled to because you have to earn respect not buy it and til they put a squad of mostly home grown talent and not spend 500 million pound on already established players and have a moaning pre-madonna for a manager who will always use an excuse
Were you just being funny when you wrote the text "....changed the spelling of Mertin to Marin..."?
Steve,
No idea what you're referring to ;-)
Thanks for pointing it out.
Daniel, when you say that a club will only get the respect when winning the league if the squad is of mostly home grown talent, you are living in cloud cuckoo land. even man utd oly have giggs, scholes and gary neville homegrown this year.
If Randy Lerner suddenly puts 150 million into your side, you going to start supporting birmingham city?? No, you're going to rejoice in the success just like every fickle football fan out there, me included.
Don't be so high and mighty
I look silly now you've changed it...
Ok, I was enjoying this new forum until the snide remarks started flowing just like the evening mail yourshout page. Can we keep it friendly and make constructive comments. Yes, Chelsea may have bought their success and yes I for one am jealous! I am glad that we are not going to get the millions that chelsea have and will enjoyt the next few years establishing ourselves somewhere in the mould of Arsenal. Their success has added an exciting new element to the league.
We were kicked off the park by a superior team but we have had a great season so far and I'm still enjoying it. We are heading in the right direction and the whole club is changing for the better.
As much as ''blue'' seems to be frustrating alot of fans on here, to be fair he is talking sense. We got beaten by a team that completely dominated Barcelona not so long ago, and a team that will win the competition - I have no doubt. And as Steve said - pity about the bottle, he's not wrong either. We just didnt do enough on the night.
Chelsea have their floors, and I am not a fan the cheque book and what they will pay for a player. But teams will catch up with them by hook or by crook, Man United are proving it right now and Tottenham proved it on Sunday. In the long run as much as it pains alot of football fans to see the power of their buying power I think it will improve the standard of the league in the long term. As comical as it is watching them being bent over for Sveva for £30m when Van Nistleroy went for half that - and Van is proven at this level where as Sveva is not.
But at the end of the day last night will show O'Neil who is going to fight for their Villa shirt and who will lie down and die under pressure. To a degree we will have to consolidate this season as there in no where near enough depth or quality to compete with such a talented squad as Chelsea - I just wish Drogba wouldnt dive cause he could be a really special player, and he is letting him self and Chelsea down badly.
I will take away last nights memories of the support we gave the teams and where we can be in the future - its early days for Villa and we have one of the best managers in the league and our own billionairre chairman who is yet to reveal his hand in the transfer market. But for once we can aspire to be the next Chelsea or Man U because for once we really have the right chairman, financial clout, manager, and some of the most devoted support I have witnessed with villa for a long time.
My voice has gone this morning, but I have my tickets for Goodison park and I cant wait. we still have the F.A Cup aswell.
Is there a Chelsea fan or Villa fan that can disagree with me?
I'd just like to point out that a. Steve did spot a spelling mistake and I've changed it, as you'll see by the modified date at the bottom of the post and b. this isn't really a forum more a comment thing; the forum is coming soon though!
And I've mentioned this somewhere else, but please keep it civil! Light hearted banter is good but when it degrades to the other stuff it's just not fun for anyone.
Also, they've finally changed the Mertin to Martin!
Cheers
Just got an official text from Villa saying Laursen is confident of being back within the month. great news! up the villa!
Seems like a little whinging going on here today. Villa have a fantastic manager and the future is bright, one beating is not the end of it, neither is it time to start tossing out the usual "cheque book management" quotes against us Chelsea. We know what it is like, Man Utd, Liverpool, Blackburn all been there and done it. Football is an expensive business these days. Remember that whilst Chelsea pay over the odds for players, we don't rip off clubs that buy from us afterwards.
Good luck for the rest of the season. Be proud.
... : Paul; Good point, Damien Duff to the magpies for £5m - what was that all about?
Does this mean we can have SWP for £10m, Geremi for £2m, Bridge for £3.5m, and Ferreira for £5m ?????????????
All players I rate who could take us on.
But stig if you bought all those players, you'd be accused of trying to buy the league!! ha ha
what would you do if mr lerner did start splashing his cash and it brought you success? would you be upset? would you start watching grassroots football instead?? No of course not!! Just difficult to accept it when it happens to another club and not yours....
... : blue; I agree with you, I havent said I didnt. I also said In the long run as much as it pains alot of football fans to see the power of your buying power I think it will improve the standard of the league in the long term aswell because your bringing the best talent in the world to our league.
On the flip side it makes it harder for smaller teams like sheffield, reading and watford to establish themelves financially although the £40m per team in tv rights will bridge the gap short term it will only inflate the transfer market again for everyone.
Not that Mr Lerner & Mr Abramovich cant affors it....hahahahahahahahahaha - oh no, money is starting to change me already!!!!!!
On the subject I think we will spend a good few million quid in jan and summer, as Lerner is the second richest club chairman in europe, only second behind abramovich. You know what I cant wait for it either, Midlands football needs it badly !!!
Can't wait untill January... wonder who we'll buy?
Keep hearing the Defoe rumour but not many others...?
Stig, Chelsea beat you fair and square, now shut up whining and concentrate on your next game.
the famous gcp; Who was whinging? I am having a conversation, so if you dont mind **** off.
stig...paulo ferreira to villa...youve got to be pulling my leg. Everyone knows that the only reason Chelsea signed ferreira for so much money was to keep relations between chelsea and porto sweet and was onviously compensation for chelsea having mourinho. Did you see Robbie Keane take Ferreira to the cleaners last sunday. Geremi for me, is average aswell.
p.s chelsea fans..go find your own blog
This new blog has deteriorated into just another pathetic list of comments from a load of kids. It's the same as other all other blogs and is not worth reading. Thanks all idiot chelsea fans for posting stupid comments and all pathetic villains for responding. Wont be using this site again.
Goodnight
Many of you may have watched the friendly of Brazil VS Argentina and saw a 25 year old Brazilian score 2 goals called Elano Blumer. I wondered who this phenomianal player was with and after some research found he plays for a ukrainian club called FC Shakhtar Donetsk and I'm still wondering why no one has signed him as he went on to score in the next match he played for Brazil as well. I think that elano could be a great signing for aston villa and even though he plays attacking midfielder he has shown signs of being able to play as a striker and with a manager like Mr O'neil could easily do so if not needed in midfield.
