Richard Caborn jumps on another bandwagon, this time club ownership

Tuesday, 05 September 06, 07:48 AM · Comments (0)

Sports Minister Richard Caborn is lobbying government departments to support a change in European legislation in an attempt to crack down on secretive investors taking stakes in English football clubs.

This is the same Dick Caborn who last December jumped on the bandwagon for salary caps in the Premiership.

While I think he was spot on the first time, only because the salaries are out of control, ownership of clubs is hardly out of control or 'secretive' and it appears he's using the statement from UEFA for a bit of publicity.

Or it could be that he knows that the real funds behind the West Ham offer are from Abramovich.

I'm writing about this on the day Randy Lerner announced he has over 85% of the club shares and then I think about why Caborn brought up salaries in December and what he achieved from that?

Mr Lerner and Glazer have not purchased English clubs for the fun of it and are fully aware of how much money is in the game and how much of it is thrown away on player salaries. They also know, from experience with their American Football teams, that a wage cap works for the club as well as the player.

Salary capping is coming and it will go some way to making football an equal sport again I just fail to see why a politician, who wants to be taken seriously, has to throw his hat in the ring on a subject he probably knows very little about.
