With pre-season training starting tomorrow and in a little over two weeks our first match of the season, things are going to happen very soon and because of that, we've got more rumours for you.
The Guardain are saying that Robert Green from West Ham has had his name added to a short list Martin O'Neill is carrying about himself.
Now, Green is an excellent goalkeeper and one I think most Aston Villa fans would welcome with open arms, but it's just more speculation without any quotes to read into.
In the news that won't go away, despite most now wanting the player to leave, The Sun are telling us that Liverpool are willing to pay £17mn. for Gareth Barry and that it will be their final offer.
I'm not going to pass opinion on Barry, but I will say that Martin O'Neill should not think twice about accepting £17mn. for Barry. Most will agree it's a great price for this player - more than we could really ever have hoped for.
That's it for this morning so far, but I've got a feeling that we'll be getting a few more later today so there will be something this afternoon.

Well if £17 million is true I agree. Next.......
If he hands in a transfer request, get rid at this price I reckon
Now, that seems like conjecture to me...it's just typical haggling that one team has been offering lower than the asking price, and with their final heave they offer just enough lower than the asking price to be acceptable. By typical i don't mean it's true, i mean it's what i would guess would be the next move as well, without really knowing anything. The Sun have tracked this entire story from the beginning...they were claiming 15 mil last time when it was apparently 13 mil. I don't believe this for one minute, no matter how much they need to offer 17 mil i can only see an offer of 15 mil coming in...and maybe that's what MON's value is as well.
take 17m and get green in for 6m all this by friday would be great end to the week and give us a platform for the rest of the window.
Too right, i was saying to friends over a month ago Villa should take £15M if it was offered, my only concern is the story says £15M plus £2M add-ons. If the add-ons are complicated or unrealistic (GB to play 25 CL games) MON won't be impressed.
Either way GB will probably be out of favour within 2-3 seasons, just like Crouch, Pennant, Alonso, Garcia. I could go on.
All of the above are Benitez's signings and yet he seems to grow tired of them, sometimes for no apparent reason.
Just one last thing, GB says he wants to go to Liverpool for CL football, even he isn't bold enough to say 'cos i wanna win trophies' maybe this is an unconcious acknowledgment that Pool wont win anything again next season.
Funny how things can change over the course of an off-season isn't it! No more than 5 weeks back (and I don't think I'm alone here) I would have loved Gareth to stay but now most of us will be more than happy if he makes his way up the M6, turns left when he gets to the M58 and doesn't come back until the next home game against Liverpool!
If they're offering $17mill we should snap their (thieving scouser) hands off! ;D
We have got a billionaire owner, and it is a good price. Let him go and move on.
For me I would take £17m I'm sick of all this barry this and barry that talk. I have been a huge barry fan for years but I am disappointed in the way he has acted like a little kid not getting his way and stamping his feet. He should of learn by now not to get on the wrong side of MON like PB did. Cos is if this bid doesn't get accepted I could see barry been put into the reserves to rot
I wanna see some good signings coming to the club if we are going to start pushing for at least this season the top six. This talk of Robbo about to sign has put a smile on my face and hope it comes off. But now this talk of green floating about is now making me think who would we prefer as number 1??
Lmao by friday ? Come on we are talking about martin o neill here
Unless of course u mean the last friday of the transfer window
Green would be good id prefer robinson yes people may call me crazy for that but robbo in a few more years will reach his peek and be great
If £18 Million is the price quoted then MON should not accept a penny less. Maybe that will demonstrate to Rafa that you can't walk over Aston Villa anymore and in future he may act in a professional way.
In any case, we should not be selling before players have been brought into the squad. And I mean quality players not kids from Leicester.
Damian,
According to you we were gonna get signings in Jan, then immediately at the end the season, then Sidwell was going to sign a few weeks ago, and then Mattock early this week. When will they ever happen???????????
Excluding Barry - we have a squad of 14 players that have started a game for the club (we also have Salifouu and Routledge - neither of whom have started a game for us).
We willl be returning for pre-season with two yes two fit defenders (Laursen and Knight). We only have two other first team defenders - Davies is injured and Bouma is on holiday because of the Euros.
It really is ridiculous now. I thought pre-season was meant to be spent moulding a team together???
I know O'Neill is a late operator in the market - but we are into the third year of a five year plan and we have a squad that is very light and with totally inadequate defensive cover, oh and still with no RIGHT BACKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
£15m £2m depending on Liverpools final position in the league... So...What we're really looking at is £15m!!
I'd like to think MON will hold out for £18m, although maybe MON will now start thinking about forcing Rafa's hand and make him throw in a player £15m. The extra £2m is a bit of a non event.
This fee is probably 15M plus 2M in add-ons. Personnally i think we should take it. Feck it, id rather get 15M for him and buy someone who wants to be at the club than have a player that is not happy. I think i will be accepted but ny god am i nervous about who we are going to buy to replace him. We need an outstanding CM.
I'd love Robert Green, but who's to say he won't be valued as much as someone like Boruc? He had a great season in the Premiership last season, so he certainly won't come cheap.
i can see this barry deal being done today or tomorrow as he wont want to go to pre-season training with villa on thursday.
In his recent rebuttal of GBs NOTW claims, MON said, "...he will get his express wish to leave...'. I wonder if this is a signal that he is treating the outburst as a transfer request and GB will be given an ultimatum to accept he has effectively made such a request or stay put.
I also wonder if MON will be thinking about the future when he finalises this deal with Rafa. Will he want everyone to understand that if they try these underhand tactics to prize a player away from Villa it's going to backfire on them. So I won't be surprised if he refuses to accept a lower bid - he has said repeatedly that he doesn't need the money and he'll be happy to keep Barry and let him suffer the consequences of his actions.
I take my hat off to him, I'm glad that he is establishing a reputation that we are not a soft touch. And I'm looking forward to the finalisation of some transfers now. He was adamant in January that he had to get players in and I am confident he will - and they will take us forward.
I see ANOTHER ex-Villa player has come out and tried to publically persuade Barry to join Liverpool, this time Mark Delaney.
I know he's not quite held in the same regard as Platt or Merson, but I find this a real shame. I always really liked Delaney, can't believe he's doing this now.
Let Barry go for £17m. No point having an unhappy player at the club and lets face it, if we force him to stay now then he'll only go next season and for half the price as he'll be 28 and will only have one year left on his contract. The heart says he should stay but the head says we should let him go at £17m. As for Green, how can Ferdinand be worth £10m and Green worth just £6m? - I think this is all rubbish talk. Green signed a new contract last season for the Hammers so I don't see him moving on (certainly not at that price), and Robinson wouldn't come to us if he thought he might end up on the bench (he'd be better off at Middlesborough if that were the case) so I think this is nothing more than speculation.
17 million! Take it and run!
I think Mark Delaney might be looking for a new job.

You don't tell your gaffer (in this case MON) what or what not to do.
I agree with that one mossiewalsh. I can see this deal been done by the end of the week max. But at least we should get robbo in the next 48 hours from what I'm hearing so it's not all bad news.
But I think at 1st a lot of fans were shocked that Bazza wanted to leave and many like me didn't want him to go. But now, the sooner he goes the better. The last thing I want is an unhappy player like Barry stamping his feet cos he ay got his way and making everyone else on edge and lose their confidence.
£6m for Green is laughable. £10-£12m more like. RobGreen - England's best keeper is going nowhere.
Sorry Guys, this is just more lazy journalism, there is no way that Green will be leaving WHU, we have the same ambitions as you and the same type of backing, so we are not interested in selling those who will help us get there, especially as he is already on a long term contract with us. We would quite happily give you the players we don't want like we did with Harewood and Reo-Coker, so you are welcome to Cole, Quashie, LBM, Davenport but sorry Green is off-limits.
Damian, i really think that you should highlight the following two articles about the Barry saga that I found in the last two days.

I think we all know that this bid will be accepted within a few hours. MON will want to get rid of him now and because its been reported its Liverpool's final offer, MON cannot afford to have Barry here next season after the comments last weekend.
£17mn! Good bit of business in my opinion, we could get 2 decent replacements for that or hopefully 1 really good replecement ;)
As for Robert Green. I think personally hes happy at West Ham. We all know he is fantastic at penalties but ive said it before and ill say it again; if we need to kick on, i think we need a world class stopper. But please MON prove me wrong!
BBC says the bid is for 15 mil which tells me that Liverpool are short of cash, we should definitely hold out on this one for 17-18 as we have stated. Bottom line is that Barry is still under contract and will have to play for us next season if this deal does not go through. I have stuck up for Barry in the last few weeks but making this public wasn't the smartest move, but also hints at the lack of man management that MON is famous for. I think CL football is secondary to the wages he'll receive, same thing with Ronaldo at Man Utd, but this is part of a bigger issue and players are abusing clubs when they are under contract. The FA needs to control this by either putting some kind of salary cap on players or making more stringent rules around players under contract so that the clubs that pay the salaries have more rights around their assets rather than it becoming a free for all.
I am sure like most Villa fans, we want this rubbish resolved and want to see a few players through the door. So far the post season has been nothing but rumours, it's about time we had some bodies in to make us all feel a little optimistic going into next season. Pre season training starts Thursday, I can't see MON selling Barry for 15 mil so i'd love to be a fly on that wall come the end of the week.
JUST IN!!! Thieving scousers deny £15mil with add ons bid. shit! :(
