Round up: Sorensen a doubt, new defender, Holte Hotel and not much else

Tuesday, 31 July 07, 04:24 AM · Comments (68)

Well, what can I say; there isn't much happening at the moment, no new rumours or any juicy gossip to write about but still a few interesting things.

Thomas Sorensen is a doubt for the opener against Liverpool. He's expected to need three or four weeks to get fit so there is a chance he'll make Liverpool but it's unlikely. Apparently he wants to 'underline his position at the club' and he's not happy about picking this injury up.

Villa have also signed Eric Lichaj, an 18 year old defender from the US. He has signed a two year professional contract but will initially train with the Academy. I know nothing about this lad but will be interesting to see him progress.

The Holte Hotel opens up this week and we've got two people attending the opening night on August 2nd so we'll have a little write up for you about it then. It will be open for the public as a normal pub apart from on match days when it will be by invite only.

The invite only scheme will be managed by the club and the invites will be sent out to season ticket holders. It's a nice touch and I'm sure one that will go down well. We'll let you know about the food and drinks when our person wakes up, probably from a hangover, on Friday morning.

Basically, not much else. Rumours of Alan Smith and Brede Hangeland are doing the rounds again this morning. Our money is still on Jose Bosingwa, the Porto right back but we have to wait and see.

Not long to go until August 11th. I cant' wait. In the meantime and to make the season a little more interesting, why not join our fantasy football league. There is £10,000 up for grabs!

Cant believe how bored I am with this pre-season compared to the hope and excitment I felt at the end of last season, its been a real let down.
No news of any signings, we face Liverpool a week Saturday with no recognised RB, a second choice keeper (who I would like to see recapture his Arsenal form but I doubt this) and a squad woefully lacking depth should we get any injuries.
not happy !! :'(

I honestly think we are no better off squad wise than we were last season, therefore i don't believe we are going to do much better than maybe 8th or 9th. I'm a little disappointed with the lack of transfer activity when we were supposedly promised a number of class signings, but then again i suppose us villa fans will have to grin and bare it whilst the top four pull even further away, Liverpool were head & shoulders above us even before they spent a further £50 million, with funds raised & with what we have purchased already we have probably spent £5 million.

Do all you season ticket holders feel mugged or do you believe in what MON is building!

Can't wait for the new season to start & think Young, NRC & Moore are going to be Villas star men for the season.

Right we play pool a week on saturday thats 11 days to sign a RB just be patient he wouldn't be saying we need players if we weren't going to sign any. i trust RL & MON to come good for villa.

Our midfiled and front line is absolutely fine!!!!

We do need a right back and goalie tho! Not long left and that is annoying as new signings take time to settle in!

I saw the goals from the the games on tour after watching the link someone provided and i thought we did really well, we looked dangerous and Moores finishing was really good. Ashleys goal was an absolute belter and now im really looking forward to going to the Inter game at the weekend to see how the likes of Moore,Gabby,Young and Reo-Coker cope with some of those players, could be a really good confidence builder for the boys.

P.S ( Me and the girls got some of the season tickets in the north stand lower and i was wondering if anyone has watched a game from there before. Were on the back row central to the goal )

We have the smallest squad by far - total 20 players it was that went on tour!!! I have seen a stat that that is the joint smallest squad potentially ever to start a premiership season. And that includes kids Ohallaran, steiber and osborne. It is all very well saying our midfield and attack is fine but what happens when 3 or 4 of them are injured which will happen at some point. It happened last year and that is why we had such a bad middle of the season. Even MON admitted the problem was lack of numbers/depth so why have we reduced the size of the squad so much?
The players should be in by now to gel before the season starts. Cant see us finishing higher than last season at the moment.

I have watched a game from the north lower, it was a few seasons back when we played Nk vartex in the inter toto cup...they could only muster an amazing 5 fans so villa had the north lower. they are decent seats, i sat quiet near the front and really liked how close i was to the players. i was about 13 at the time and ever since then ive had a season ticket...so it couldnt of been a bad experience!

Really professional the way we have left signings until last minute, if we are lucky the players that we keep being promised will come might get to know each others names before kick off. OK I'm being negative but apart from a mickey mouse cup we won 13 years ago and a shocking fa cup final what have Villa given me back for so much time, money and emotion? All of the players passing through those doors in that time have been paid ridiculous amounts of money including agents and businessmen, so many have got rich on the back of fans by providing us with what? All I am asking for are a couple of exciting signings for repayment, if the players give their all that's fine you can't ask for more and this is a new start so lets just see, but a one sided relationship can only go on for so long. Yes it was the old regime that traded Villa as a business, investing just enough to ensure premiership survival and a constant income but not enough to win things but by chance, BUT I need more from the new owners to really believe, not MON he is great and will do what he can, it's just not positive enough when watching so called lesser teams investing and buying players. I hope I eat my words and will gladly admit to being a negative whinger, but I DO believe that after such an amount of time with no return it is within my expectations to reach for the stars.

to be honest i still think 2 playes are definatley needed in the starting 11, if we are goin to have a chance of tryin to get into europe- wich are a gk, and a rb.

gk- carson IMO -5M

rb- lucas neil IMO - 5.5M

CARSON,NEIL,MELLBERG,LAURSEN,BOUMA,YOUNG,PETROV,REO-COKER,
BARRY[C],AGBONLAHOR/L.MOORE,CAREW. 4-4-2.

SUBS-SORENSEN,CAHILL,GARDNER,MALONEY,HAREWOOD/MOORE/AGBONLAHOR.

that would be a quality 16 and i would be happy with that!!!

I can see us bringin in a RB and a CH, not to sure about the keeper situation at the minute.

I think if we can have a good run up to january we will again strengthen we 2 or 3 new signings.

We do need a RB & a goalkeeper. Doesnt the transfer window close August 31st? so MON has another month. I know the season starts on the 11th so we possibly wont have all our signings for the openining match but id rather MON made clever buys rather than Panic buys.

Johnny i would love to see Carson come to Villa but i dont think Liverpool would want to sell him. If we did get him i would be more than happy.

Lucas Neill i dont think would come. WHU are paying him high wages (over 60grand if you believe the papers) and i dont think he is the sort of player we should break our wage structure for. He picked money over chance of success. Id rather MON went abroad for a RB as any in the PL will be overpriced.

im startin to get abit worried now as we have brought 2 new players in and the season starts in just over a week. the midfield n strikers look good, were lookin very threatening going forward but we dont have any cover if anythin happens to them and our defense we need to build on we dont even have a full back four or any cover, if we go into the season like this we will prob b ok untill we start pickin up injuries and suspensions then we are really going to struggle

Ive seen alot of people drafting there villa team to start the season, and most are missing out one important player - Gabby Agbonlahor. He is our main man, possibly our most valuable player and he will be our main man this year. Yes Luke Moore is looking terrific which is good news for all villans, however i do believe our team should be based around Gabby.

question is 4-3-3 or 4-4-2?

If you go 4-3-3, it'll probably be reo barry petrov with Carew up top and Aggy, Moore or Young off him.

If you go 4-4-2 it'll probably be reo barry with Aggy on right and young on left with carew and moore up front.

Another question, who would you drop Petrov, Moore, Aggy or Young?

Then again with our lack of numbers defensively it could be
3-4-3 or 3-3-4.

I would love to see peoples response and see if they think the same as me.

One last point, they say we've not signed many players, granted first team has been slow but they have been snapping up future prospects two Austrians, one Finish, One American and Young Harry Forrester from Watford, RL and MON have always said they have a 5-year plan, not 2 or 3, so don't be disappointed our time is comming guys.

Gabby has to play upfront, he looks so much more comfortable and dangerous than when he was on the wing.

Young looked very comfortable and very threatening on the wing in the U21 championships.

Ayersy Wrote: | 21.56BST | Jul 31, 2007

Our team is very much based on raw pace.

Looking around the premiership this year, many defences including ours lacks real pace.

In Barry, Petrov, and Reo Coker we have creative players that can take advantage of the speed within the team.

I am very optomistic at the thought of seeing alot of goals for the boys in claret and blue.

i only said lucas neil because he is a quality player and a MON type of player, in the way he is rough and aggressive which could be only good for our defence and would add extra leadership at the back.

but it think bosingwa would be a more probable signing for the RB role

It's quite annoying to once again read so much negativity from fellow Villa fans. Do we really want to justify o'leary's (fickle) comments? Why not show a bit more faith instead of comparing us with other so called big spenders such as West Ham e.t.c. I personally would'nt want any of the signings that they have made. How is it that people (fans) have suddenly become experts in the transfer market? Come on, lets wait and see what happens between now and the end of the month before we judge MON!

Also Agbonlahor is a striker and looks alot more dangerous upfront, was it 5 in 5 last games of the season when he was playing upfront?

You have to play your best players in there best most dangerous position, for Gabby thats up top.

Ashley Young adapts very well to the wing and looks more comfortable on either, and also very threatening.

Check out Altidore's two goals against Brazil in the Under 20s. He doesn't do much for the second, but you need to see Adu juggle on the sidelines past two defenders.

We'll be fortunate to be on Altidore's radar when he turns 18. You'd be nuts to think otherwise. He was one of the best, if not the best, pure strikers at the Under-20s.
Unfortunately, I doubt that he'll come here.

And, by the way, the Parade awards that Altidore and Lichaj won are given only to high-school players.

See thats were it shows you're not a good player if you're 17 and only playing for tamworth. you'd clearly struggle any higher hence why you want to go to a so called "garbage" standard of football. Why not stay here with tamworth in a league which you obviously think is better than the MLS ? And to make the assumption that i've never played football before is a stupid one, 1 i used to play football with Luke & Stefan Moore 2 on several occasions i was told i was just as good and that i should try to break into football as there isn't alot of good english RB's up and coming in this country, And 3 i never got into professional football because i broke the 3rd toe and 3rd metatarsil that required a year to heal and when it did i required a futher operation to place 3 metal rods in the toe and metatarsil and shave the bone, which took another year. So the result of that was i can't run properly cause the toe doesn't bend upwards.

Lol right MLS is the same standard as conference? then why would Angel really lower his standards of competition and still only manage 9 goals, Need i mention Beckham? Have you not noticed more americans are in the premiership than ever before? Then theres Freddie Adu i've no doubt he'll go to a bigger european club than benfica in the future. And as far as talking shit i'd say you're a pro at that despite being only 17 so congrats you're a pro at one thing, maybe you should stick to that cause the way you talk about yourself and football is a joke. Why would you to go to the MLS if you've been with Villa and now Walsall? oh and the mighty conference team tamworth lol
