Rumour of the day: Not Sidwell or Schneider but Diego Ribas da Cunha

Thursday, 15 May 08, 11:01 AM · Comments (23)

Right, we know it's silly season but the good folks over at the The Guardian are really starting to get me excited.

Not because of Steve Sidwell, which doesn't seem to want to go away, but Diego, the Brazilian attacking midfielder that Martin O'Neill is apparently interested in.

I mentioned Diego a few weeks ago when the Sidwell rumour first appeared and I am a really big fan.

He spent time at Porto, but it never really happened for him like it has in Germany. Back then, he'd scored 25 goals in 57 appearances for Werder Bremen and it's probably changed because he would have played a few games since then, but the return will no doubt be very similar.

This is the type of player that would get me very excited for next season, so I won't get carried away just yet, but I can hope.

The other rumour from The Guardian this morning is Bernd Schneider. I don't know much about him apart from the fact he's currently at Bayer Leverkusen, so if any of you can shed a little light on him below, it would be much appreciated.

I'll leave you with this Diego video I found on YouTube, but please do not blame me for the music.

Don't think he'd have that much time on the ball in the Prem but he does look bloody impressive from the video.

Bloody hell! Now I wouldn't mind one bit if MON splashed out as much as £20 million for that guy! Bags of flair, vision and creativity. He's exactly what we need!

i know its youtube but on that sign him up, not only does he look like a good finisher with good set pieces but on that his passing movement and crossing is amazing. looks a little lightweight but sign him NOW!!!

Yes, Diego would be a great signing but will he give up Champions League football with Werder (currently 2nd) fot the intertootoot??? Bernd Schneider I can't see coming. Not that he's not a good player, he is, but he's 34 and has been at Leverkusen for ages (unless he wants a last payday of course) he's a strong midfielder who's played for the national team and has scored 35 goals in 295 games. Not exactly prolific...

Class player, obviously has more to offer than Petrov. Would love to see a combination of Diego and Barry with Reo-Coker holding. When people talk about a replacement for Barry they forget about the extra dimension and balance he brings being a south paw, all the players suggested as replacements have been right footers.

MY WORD!! Diego is THE MAN! If we sign him i'll cry tears of joy. I've watched him in the CL and the German League on Satanta and he's pure class. If he came to Villa he would EASILY be the best player we had. If you haven't seen him play, think Arsenal's Eduardo/Barca's Deco. Kind of like that. The ball sticks to his feet too!

Are we really going to get players of this quality?? i would love it if we did but there's this little niggle at the back of my mind, maybe it's the money or the fact there is so much money to spend in the prem league now that its gonna be even harder to attract players of this and bentley's quality. since MON took over every transfer window we have hoped to sighn players of this and more quality but have been left felt short changed (apart from A Young)! i do hope this window will be different!!!!!

looks mustard!!

don't know if he was injured or not, but doesn't look like he's played enough games for brazil to qualify for a work permit though. :(

I don't expect this to happen any more than I expect Stephen Carr to happen.

I saw this player at the Copa America a few years back in my travelling days and he was rubbish, but I also saw that Fabiano kid from Sevilla and thought he was rubbish too even though he scored.

Now these players are worth about £20 mill each which means I would be a terrible scout. R'ber MON did buy Juninho for Celtic and said Rivaldo was better than Zidane so he def likes Brazil players. Dont think we'll get Diego tho. Be good to bid for him just to get us excitied.

Diego is on Setanta Sports 2 right now for anyone that's interested.

Wow. Given the usual caveats about highlight reels and adapting to the PL, that's the sort of quality we need. It's too much fun imagining that sort of player inserted into the squad.

This my friends is exactly the type of player we lack. I don't usually get too hopeful about transfer rumours, but please let it be true, Diego is absolute quality.
