Rumours of the day: Peguy Luyindula and the big man, Dean Ashton

Saturday, 30 August 08, 03:00 AM · Comments (78)

Back in the day, when you read something in The Times you could take it as gospel. Okay, those days are a long tome ago but you could.

These days their rumours page is very much like an office sweepstake. They randomly pick a player then pick a Premier League team, this time it's us and the player in questions is Peguy Luyindula.

Now, I've not looked him up yet, but I'm going to now and I've got a feeling he's going to be tall. Back in a minute.

Well, you could knock me over with a feather. He's four inches short of six foot, currently at Paris Saint-Germain and is 29 years old.

At that size it's clearly this is a load of rubbish; Martin O'Neill is only going to want to bring in a giant of a man.

Which could be why the Dean Ashton rumour has surfaced again. A few days ago, I don't really remember when, we mentioned something we'd found on another website about Ashton and Ferdinand leaving West Ham and maybe coming to us.

Well, the West Ham fans got a little irate and started getting all upset at either of these leaving. Well, Ferdinand is gone and I reckon and if Dean Ashton really does have aspirations of one day playing for a big team and England, he's going to have to leave West Ham to fulfil those dreams.

I'd really like Dean Ashton and despite him signing a recent contract extension, every player has a price and it's just a case of paying.

If Deano wants a step up it would have to be to a big 4 club ... & you are seriously not one of those ... Ask any Stoke fan ...

I don't think Ashton will come to Villa. Would love to have him, but don't see it happening. West Ham fans, this isn't a dig at you, as I reckon you guys will do really well this season (fit squad pending), but...Villa ARE a bigger club than you. I'm not putting you down, it's just the way it is.

Amog - I agree at the moment the pendulum is swinging your way ... but you know football, it could turn at any moment. For some reason, our club has seriously stopped spending & you have all the clout at the moment, but things change fast in football, only 3 years ago we were doing you 4-0 with a marlon harewood hattrick. Oh how things have changed. Seriously though I think Ashton would need a top 4 club to seriously improve his chances, after all if he was fit last week he would have played for England.

All West Ham fans keep it coming. You must have seen that Newcastle fans also said that Milner wouldnt leave for Villa 'Because they are a big club'. If its true that we want Ashton, he'll be here before the deadline passes. He's a great player. We always take your players easily.

I will be keeping a close eye on all of the premiership line-ups 2day. If MON wants a forward with experience of English football, you would expect them to miss out 2day. Hoping that Ashton is missing from the West Ham team 2day. Just have a feeling that Doyle could be it.

BIG CLUB? Any club that takes Marlene and Reo-coker off us for about 13 million are BIG MUGS not BIG CLUBS, you need to sort your defence out before anything else. I dont see how you think finishing four places above us in the league makes yu a bigger club, cos it aint because of the fanbase! Fair enough you have spent a lot of cash this summer but again doesnt make you a big club- look at Chelsea two years ago advertising their tickets on general sale in the national press!!

Be sensible for a minute eh, we hated Liverpool fans coming on here telling us how they are a much bigger club than us when they were after GB, and thats what makes them one of the most hated teams in England isnt it?

Lets not start all that crap with West Ham fans, because to be quite honest, they can keep Ashton. A great player when he is fit, but how often is he fit, he will be massively over priced when the money can be better spent elsewhere. I would rather see us break the bank for somebody like Santa Cruz.

West Ham are in serious trouble this season...their board is a joke and Curbs is still unproven as he has never had a fully fit squad to work with at WHAM...if they don't do well in first ten games you can expect him to be first casualty I'm afraid...and that would lead Ashton to our merry door in january!

Never normally get involved in these petty squabbles, but as a West Ham fan, I actually do agree Aston Villa are a bigger club at the moment.

They are signing Milner for £10MILL while we are looking at pandiani for f*cks sake!!

However, our only slight advantage is that we are in London and like it or not, that is an attraction for a lot of players, east london is not as big a Sh*thole as some may think, and the regenration due to the olympics would make it quite attractive to some. Pity we dont have a pot to p*ss in regarding transfers, which is another reason Villa are bigger than us at the moment.

I'm a West Ham fan who has lived in the West Mids for the last 7 years (5 of them in Erdington). I've always had a soft spot for Villa be it because of the colours (which your players stole for us after losing a bet) which give us a historical link or my hatred of Birmingham City. However, neither club is a "big club" Villa have more prospects then us at the moment but in football that can change quickly. The Ashton rumour has come about because the press are trying to destabalise our club and he has been linked with lots of other clubs already.

A little bit of politics ladies and gentlemen: if we would only invest in high-speed rail then some of the allure of London clubs for premiership footballers might evaporate for the following reasons:

1) Commuting from London to a midlands club might be a viable option
2) London would be much closer for footballers living out of town so they might not feel the need to live there.
3) Large-scale prestige development would be stimulated in cities such as Brum now within easy reach of the big smog.

This is all pretty naive. We're better off waiting until premiership footballers' wages rise just a little bit higher and they all have their own helicopters to transport their wags to the 'glamour' of Oxford Street W1.

I would love what your saying to be true but there is no chance of us getting another couple of major priced signings(Falcao 8M)(Felliani 6-10M). I think we could get a low priced Full back (Naylor or LOAN)and hopefully a forward (Not Doyle) although he would be better than nobody.

Well we are playing in the UEFA cup and have the squad to get pretty far, we also have the squad to compete to get into the UEFA or CL places again. At the moment I dont think anyone believes West Ham will be challenging although it could happen. Curbs has brought alot of injured players and wasted alot of money, the owners were expecting big things with the level of investment they put in and didnt get it so they dont want to spend much more. I dont think Alan C wanted Ferdinand to go did he?

The point about him not wanting to leave London is mute as others have said, he could easily still live there and be playing at VP.

This is so childish but equally quite fun really. Whether Ashton comes or not to Villa won't prove either way who's the bigger club, nor will these stats but I thought they were quite telling.

All time league table:

Aston Villa: 6th position 4282 points
West Ham Utd: 64th position 3416 points

All time EPL table:

Aston Villa: 5th position
West Ham Utd: 11th position

Average attendance last season:

Aston Villa: 6th position
West Ham Utd: 11th position.

Seems you second rate claret and blue-ers have made that 11th position your very own, bless ya.

Also, if you're such a footballing Mecca, why do your academy basically graduate and then leave? We'll have a sweepstake on Freddie Sears being the latest if you like just to make it more interesting.

Although i guess with West Ham's huge financial troubles at the moment and having to sell players just to stop losing money on wages, we are in with a shot of getting him. Good player, hopefully he's over all his injury troubles of the last 2 years and i definitely think Martin O'Neill could turn him into a consistent England striker because Rooney and Owen are just playing crap.

If we forget about the who bigger stuff and just look at the facts. If you were Ashton where would you like to play

Villa Park
Lots of money
A great manager and a great supportive chairman
Playing in UEFA cup
Activly improving the squad and 1st 11.
Not top 4 yet but have a plan and are trying to get there.
Lots of young English players and an improved chance of playinbg for England
Will spend all of this season in the top half of the league fighting for a 4th spot and will probably finish 5th or 6th

West Ham
No money to spend and have a huge wage bill of injured journey men that were panic buys when tehy had money
A manager due to get sacked in 1st 10 games and the board sold Anton F without his agreement.
Not playin Europe
The club aree selling their players and not getting any in. No improvement to the squad happening
This year West Ham should finish lower half of mid table but if they are unlucky with injuries they could have a relegation fight to contend with
Will Fabio be going to West Ham on a regular basis this year? I dont think so

Tough choice for Ashton! Oh maybe he likes living in London so much he will stay in West Ham. Come on MON, this would we a great signing to close off a summer of improvement.

ugly_betty is 100% correct - and you can add the fact that we are OFFICIALLY the 4th most successful british club in history.

west ham are a club i dont mind at all, but your fans need to GET REAL, there would be a hell of a lot of positives for ashton to move to villa.

all this over mere speculation, personally i dont think MON has made a bid at all - fair play to him if he has mind you! but we'll see by monday wont we - but remember...if he stays at west ham - it may mean that we didnt make a bid at all and that its all speculation.

As Rich says we will know by Mon and if we dont get him it is becasue we didnt want him. As with Milner and other players playing for smaller clubs the fact is that if MON decides he wants a player more than likely MON will get the player. We are on a building process and this is just a natural place to be. We are not a top 4 team yet but we are knocking on the door and we are able to attract very good players (Milner & Ashton) that have aspirations of playing in the champions league that the big 4 clubs dont want. We are not in a position to get a top 4 player in (Boswinga!, MON tried for him) but give it a few years and you never know :D

As for West Ham, a year ago they could attract some players by offering huge wages but now that the Hammers have no cash they cant get anyone.

West Ham won't Ashton for 12 million pounds. Were I West Ham, I wouldn't sell Ashton for less than 15 million and would probably hold out for 18 million.

How about Marco Borriello, big bloke, young and 20 goals in Serie A last season (with Genoa, on loan) and not happy at AC Milan due to the likes of Ronaldinho, Inzaghi, Shevchenko, Pato and Kaka' limiting his appearances..have a look. We could get him on loan as Milan realise they have far too many...

This, do this.

Anyway, when did Dean Ashton become Gert Muller?

i think ashton wud be a great signing because carew is 2 slow and we need a faster person.
We shud try and sign Kevin Kuranyi from Shalke 2 he got something like 25 goals in German Bundesliga.
I could roll out a huge list of players we could sign under 20 million and them scoring over 20 but i havent got enough time.

zero chance of ashton joining villa in my opinion ... i was at the game yesterday & he is loved by the fans. Good luck against liverpool today ... they're there for the taking.

gunner in peace
cant say that i know too much about the villa and your transfer dealings, I do know that Martin O'Neill is a top manager and you will achieve great things under him, seems to me a manager in the wenger model, who will buy younger players and turn them into world beaters, rather than pay silly money.
Anyway to the point of this post, i heard from a girl i knew at uni, who now does physio work down at the villa, that she was massaging 'Big JC', who i now belive is John Carew and he was chating with 'martin', i dont know who she means there because i cant see it being the manager otherwise what was said doesnt make sense. i emailed her back to see who she ment and ill post on here later. She said word was around the place that Martin O'Neill had turned his attention to young players from the lower leagues, as he had two signings pending. Apparantly both are foreign players one from euroupe and one from south america. One is a midfielder and one is a striker, although names were not mentioned. The european signing was apparantly a done deal, but from south america their were complications which may result in the deal not being finalised before monday. If this is the case the transfer will be continued with and completed in january.
Before people start moaning and saying this is all cr ap i am only relaying what i heard, it could be true it could be bull, but thought i would post it and let you guys no. Dont know if you think this is realistic or not, or if you have any idea who the players could be?
Good luck in the match today, I think you will beat them anyway, liverpool are playing shi te at the moment

We're everything but a bigger fanbase, fair play West ham dont half a few fans but this Hammertime is delirious we're obviously bigger and if Ashton does have asperations he will come to the Villa as we are a step up, we dominated liverpoo' today and all we need now is two strikers as Agbonlahor is a lazy shit and Carew is a big slow carthorse.

Ashton is apparently waiting for a top four club to come in - and if recent rumours have any basis - Manchester United enquired about him.

He would be an excellent signing for Aston Villa but I'm unconvinced he'll be joining any time soon. West Ham won't want to lose him without a struggle and £48m is a big big outlay.

PS Anyone else think its odd that Carragher hauling down Carew by his shirt hasn't made any of the reports of yesterday's game. I don't think it would always be given as a penalty but I think it's worth mentioning as Liverpool were doing the same against Standard Liege
