Sean Scannell: Is he good enough for Aston Villa?

Wednesday, 26 March 08, 05:58 AM · Comments (28)

Right, it's a rumour that has 3 million one pound coins written all over it, but not knowing much about this lad, I've had to seek advice.

That advice has just come in and it's not what I expected and I was pleasantly surprised.

Scannell is still young so is still going to develop. His preferred position is up front but he has also played on the wing for Crystal Palace and has done well in both positions.

Like I said, I had to email and hassle a mate who is a big Crystal Palace fan to get the knowledge on Sean Scannell and I rate his opinion on football matters. This is what he had to say:

Sean Scannell is an excellent player, he's an attacking winger, sort of in the vogue of Routledge and Lennon but is not all pure pace and tricks. He plays in a very measured way and his passing and vision are brilliantly subtle.

He's strong and powerful for a young lad too but I'm not sure how he'd get on in the Premier League, it's always hard to tell but fingers crossed he plays there with us - reckon it would take him a while to get into the Villa team if they do sign him.

So, is he good enough? Probably worth a punt at £3mn. only because it's not my money and well, I'll buy anything if it isn't my money, but we all know Martin O'Neill isn't one to rush in.

hes only 17 so might aswell, think we could get him for a little less than 3 million cus they only have him for 1 more year after this season. but gettin bored of players for the future, we want a ''proud history, exciting present and bright future''

What's with all these "Is he good enough" headlines? They're starting to grate. Are we going to be getting them all summer too?

davida

if they're starting to 'grate' you, i sincerely apologise

it was a play on the last three 'not good enough'

but are you going to get them all summer? i've no idea

if scannal has the sort of potential of ashley young then it will be villa benifiting from the vision of MON .. just hope we can get a top goal scorer in summer so the club can move up a knotch

With our recent form id say Myhill, Bullard and Sean Scannell are all good enough >:(

I think I'd be willing to put the £3m in for him - not that I know anything about him, but with the smallest squad in the world (maybe a slight exaggeration), I would buy anyone that is almost good enough just to add some back-up in case of injuries. Having said that, Wayne Routledge is probably doing that job in the same position already. Anyone know why we still haven't seen Routledge?

He's lacking confidence, but surely you only get that by actually playing

This 'confidence' issue is funny. Why buy a player whose confidence had allready been shattered anyway if you dont intend to give him an opportunity. I acually feel sorry for Routhledge - no matter how bad we play - MoN doesn't believe in changing things up or giving players a chance to impress and put pressure on the starting 11. For a manager who constantly gets described as having great man management skills - the Routhledge affair suggests otherwise.
I am not suggesting that Routhledge is a world beater by any means but at least give the lad a chance. Its not as though we have much quality down the right flank....

Sounds like the perfect person to push young Gabriel Agbonlahor for his place.

Routledge get's a fairly decent wage and lack's confidence so there for can't do his job and run about with a ball at his feet make a few crosses or in his loss of confidence did he forget the basics of football ?. Christ there's Millions of people who lack confidence and still do there job so that's a load of shite in my opinion he lacks confidence, he just can't be arsed to do the work he's being paid to do.

What's with the slating of Damian everytime he writes an article for his Blog.
It's a Blog, his opinion, not an article full of facts about Aston Villa.
By all means we should disagree with his points if we want but quit with the " You spelt that wrong", "Your facts aren't quite right", I Don't like the headline".
Everytime we're linked with a player there are two main questions.
Is he good enough?
Will he come to us?

I just think the Rout isn't good enough, he wasn't good enough at spuds, pompy or fulham so why would he be good enough for us? MON has a habit of trying to find a diamond in the rough, granted he got that with young, but who else has he brought in thats realy that good!!! probably the only other one would be davis, but the pair of them weren't cheap, so it looks like you get what you pay for, if you tot up what we have wasted on the other average players we could have got a realy good one or two!!! its time to go and buy proven quality not maybe mightbe's

He's young and promising, get him in. That's Bullard and him, I'm already making good progress.

Hairy- NRC's been rock-solid in central mid-- again, MON paid heavily for him. Harewood's been a solid squad striker and a good late-game pace changer; WeeeeShaun has had some moments where he's given defenses hell.

With Routledge, I'd say to be patient. Ashley Young wasn't immediately amazing last January- it took time. I realize it's tough to be patient when we've been watching crap form the last three games, but O'Neill's had us steadily improving. Last year our crap run was December, and we finished 10th. This year it's March, and we're sitting 7th. Next year, we may have the squad to avoid a crap run, and finish the top four with a solid run in cup competitions. The last three games have been bad, but big picture, Villa's looking very, very good.

I actually think Maloney was better when he couldn't get into the squad and would have to shine in 20 minutes off the bench.

Excellent article. Whether Scannel is good enough is debatable but if we were to knock that price down a bit i'd go for it. Superbly written Damian.

1.5 Rising to 3 mil due to add on fees would be nice.

I havent seen this lad play for CP but ive seen him play for the ROI U18 Team and looks quite the prospect. If we could get him for around 2 mil it would be a good deal for the future.

Yh We need to bulk the squad up with some experienced and proven players. Scannel would be a great signing for 2 mill. The futures looking bright.

It's all just rumors. like the one we've bid 14.5 million cash plus add-on fee's for Ronaldhino, amid speculation he could go for 12 million in the summer. Also that Mon wants Owen to spearhead the attack with big JC.

He plays for Ireland, so he couldn't possible be good enough for Villa. *rolls eyes*

That is in reference to Kevin Doyle by the way.
