Significant funds available for Sanchez as he goes after Hughes and Davis

Tuesday, 29 May 07, 07:31 AM · Comments (12)

Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed has promised Lawrie Sanchez that 'significant funds' will be made available for players this summer.

It's going to be quite interesting to see what clubs actually spend this summer as quite a few have been promised 'significant funds'.

My concern is that with the new TV money for next season, 'significant funds' may only mean the TV money, which are significant, but it only really puts everyone on a level playing field.

The rumour doing the rounds today is not a new one and one the papers have probably just come up with by connecting the dots. Sanchez managed Hughes and Davis while at Northern Ireland and it's a fair assumption that he'll go after players he has worked with.

Sanchez has never looked after a top flight side and the success with Northern Ireland was his doorway to the Premiership however I doubt he'll make the impact and suspect the quote from Al Fayed is to generate season ticket or merchandise sales.

In my opinion, Hughes may go if O'Neill gets in a new right back but I don't think Davis will. He didn't play much last season but still played for Northern Ireland and Fulham would be a step down.

If Davis believes in his own ability then he's best waiting for his chance at Aston Villa to prove himself, unless he knows something we don't, it was only the season before last he was getting linked to Manchester United.

Wouldnt be happy for either of these to go until we make at least 2 quality signings. All the players we are linked with want to go to better (on last season PL table) clubs. Jagielka is going to Everton. Reo Cocker wants to go to Arsenal or Man U. We already have a pretty small squad and so boosting it is important so we dont want to see either of these but if we make 2 signings then one probably would be ok to leave but if we just make 1 signing and one leaves then we still have the same numbers. I hope Davis stays he is part of the future.

On the Transfer front as a whole it isnt looking good at the moment :( Most players we are linked to go elsewhere. But i have faith in O'Neill that he can bring quality players to Villa park and come next season we will have a much improved squad.

Up the Villa

The transfer window is not even open yet - how can you say it does not look good? Have faith in Martin and Randy.

Quite happy for Davis and Hughes to go. They are nowhere near good enough for the Top 6, which is why Fulham are the only club linked with them. I know Davis was impressive in his first season, but Stephen Hawking would look good playing next to McCann. Davis was atrocious last season - totally overran and looked every inch the little boy lost. Can't pass, head, shoot or tackle. There is no way he can play in midfield instead of Young, Barry, Petrov, Berger or Gardner. And there will be more players to come.

New right back is a must, as is a right midfielder.

I think Davis would be worth staying, he showed us how committed he was 2 years ago, unfortunately he didn't shine in training or when given his chance this season and Craig Gardner pegged him to the starting 11. Sneijder isn't coming here so that may have given Davis some hope but every player must realise that O'Neill wants all players to stay and to bring more quality players in to get the best out of them, competition for places is what we need to drive our club forward, MO'N knows what he's doing, let's just leave it to him.

All credit to the way you ended last season - but don't be so sure that a transfer to FFC is a 'step down' as stated above. As I recall, you guys didn't beat us last season & with one or two quality guys coming in - Steve Davis included - plus a new regime; we may just surprise a few people!

By saying a "step down" dosent necasarilly mean league position or if we beat you or not.Look at the structure of both clubs on and off the pitch, im sure you will agree Villa have more to offer.

Fellas, interested in your views on Davis. What sort of a player is he?

Part of our problem at Fulham is that we've too many mediocre midfielders who won't score or make goals. Is Davis going to help here?

Step down? I can see that, especially if your new man throws money around, but Fulham's a good place to be too. You can laugh at the away support all you like, but we had some cracking away days last year and took big crowds around to a number of grounds. Not all, but some.

cheers
Rich

You have too many mediocre midfielders who can't score or make goals? Just about sums Davis up......

Rich, it's good to have a sensible comment from a non-Villa fan on here.

Davis is a class player but he's not been the same since David O'Muppet left. Maybe he needs a season away at another club to rejuvenate his career.

Best of luck to Fulham next season.
