Slow news day so a look to England

Saturday, 12 November 05, 12:00 PM · Comments (0)

It was announced this week that if England win the World Cup in Germany next year each player is to receive a ?300,000 bonus. ?300,000 is a lot of money. Do you think it's right to pay this to multi-millionaires for playing for their country and winning the World Cup?

PFA CEO Gordon Taylor said of the announcement this week "If anybody is going to win the World Cup it will be the players on the pitch."

"I'm sure all of the players would happily play for England for nothing but the fact is that they are professionals and they have a short-term career. They are entitled to prize money if they do well in the same way that Tiger Woods is if he wins a major championship or Andrew Murray if he won Wimbledon or the rugby boys when they won the World Cup.

"They are due a fair share of any revenue that the Football Association gets. Money isn't the main motivation but the fact is they are entitled to recompense because they are professionals. I am sure there wouldn't be a football supporter in England or even a member of the general public who would begrudge it them if they brought the World Cup back after 40 years."

He has an awful lot to say about this so I'm going to say something also. I would begrudge them every penny if they won the World Cup and they took the ?300,000. Most of the England players at the tournament will probably earn ?300,000 from their clubs while at the bloody tournament so why do they need to be given another ?300,000 to win the bloody thing?

Isn't playing for your country about honour. What about all the soldiers that fought in World War Two. They won, probably against the same odds as England winning the World Cup in Germany - what reward did they get? Gordon Taylor is protecting his players but what I'd like to see now is a pledge from every England player saying if they won the money would be combined and donated to an English charity.

?300,000 is a lot of money but none of these players need it. For some making it a charitable donation will probably help with the tax man anyway.

?300,000 can go a long way and to think that these players are concerned about how much money they'll make for achieving the biggest thing any one of them could hope for in their professional careers is wrong.

Rant for the day over. Some nice news coming up very soon along with some of your emails about David O'Leary.
