Spurs and Aston Villa to Swap Teams as Silly Season Truly Kicks Off!

Wednesday, 10 June 09, 07:11 AM · Comments (62)

So let's recap the story so far, 'Arry Redknap' amusingly tried to sign Barry - that much we know is true, but this story really seemed to fire up the imagination of the press. Ever since that story journalists have sat on the toilet doing a few Sudoku puzzles and thinking up daft transfer links and swap deals between Spurs and Villa.

It started with tales of a completely laughable Spurs bid for Ashley Young (i mean c'mon be serious), then some genius - realised Villa had been linked already to Bentley (on the basis Spurs don't want him and that we inquired after him last year) and Huddlestone (on the basis that Villa lack midfielders and Huddlestone wants more first team football). So some bright spark added the two together and we had Spurs/Villa swap deals all over the shop. Most noteably swapping Bentley and Huddlestone plus cash for Ash and....wait for it John Carew (well if someone can make up a story about big John going to Man City then why not Spurs). We even got linked seperately to moves for Jenas and more recently Zokora and Hutton. So I say why not just get both teams together, whack their names in a hat and then get Martin and Arry to pick them out of the hat and to decide who plays for what team!

Coming back to Hutton though, i think that one could happen - as Spurs have more left and right backs than we have squad players in total! But there is no truth to be found presently in al the Spurs vs Villa speculation. I swear it's just loads of jealous Spurs supporting journalists irritated that Villa are being linked heavily with their teams players.

In other news it looks like the link to Ajax defender Thomas Vermaelen was just a player/agent rouse to push his price up and get Arsenal to make a move. While links to Owen seem believable but hopefully just slightly premature rather than totally unfounded (hopefully Heskey knows something). The latest links today surround us making an offer for Benoit Cheyrou (brother of former Liverpool star....erm cough..player Bruno Cheyrou) a 28yr old 6ft left footed play maker from Marsielle who according to the French press we have bid 8mil for. This is one of those links that is impossible to speculate on as it's not even our own daft tabloids making it up.  Plus i don't think i even knew the player existed till today.

Our interest in Sylvan Distin has been reheated again, reportedly we are vying for his signature with Liverpool but can offer him first team football, this is one of those persistent links like SWP, Robbie Keane and Defoe - the old 'if we were going to sign them then surely we would have by now' riff. Even a tired link to Roque Santa Cruz was kicked up today.... surely he'll go to City and Hughes if he goes anywhere! Also when not allegedly hijacking Wolves player deals we are trying to gazump Stoke! In this case it's Rosenborg's Norway international defender Vadim Demidov we might beat Stoke to (the excitement).

We've gone from being one of the most boring teams to follow in the transfer market to the new Spurs, suddenly we are linked with every man and their dog out there! Just wanted to end on this note - HOW DID WE NOT SIGN BREDE HANGERLAND WHEN WE ALLEGEDLY HAD THE CHANCE???

Martin is on his hols - i think when he comes back things will really start to get interesting......or maybe he'll just be on hand to publically rebuke all these daft links???? Time will tell.

I find it amazing that we are yet again selling players before buying, i hope MON has a midfielder in place that is better than Barry. If we end up signing a Harwood type player i might actually have to kill myself!!!

I have promised myself to take it easy this summer and not rush into work and read all of the gossip pages and then all day playing out the "what if" scenarios drawing up imaginary team line-ups and doing to sleep dreaming about Wesley Sneider at Villa Park and then starting again the next day.
No more. I am more mature than I was last year and shall resist the temptation to speculate and wait for Martin to take action. we all know nothing is going to happen until August anyway, right?

Harewood is on his way to Middlesborough, and the Cheryou link has been denied - and practically all other links have gone dead or close to death.

although the ashley young story was rubbish, spurs certainly would have the financial muscle to sign him!...villa fans that rate him at 40mil are completely deluded...he is worth half that at absolute max...i remember corluka mugging him off so much at villa park, that MON had to swith him to the other wing! lol...come on lads he aint all that! :D

Ha ha Wesley Sneijder and Ruben de la Red were too of my favourite fantasy links, followed by Defoe, SWP and Robbie Keane.

richard dunne from city? one of the most noteable performances for city when they beat us 2-0.. hate to be a party pooper but i think it will be same old same old with MON.. will sit back and deny everything for ages and finally make some mediocre signing (most likely from celtic) just before fans begin to revolt against his transfer activity. i think studying for exams has dampened my tone.. stupid books. give me some british tabloids instead

CartelYid-Young is the PFA young player of the yr so he cant be that bad. And i can also remember Young making a complete mockery of the spuds in previous games. He is worth 30 mill given some of the ridiculous prices you can get-I mean 20 mill for keane and 32 milll for lazy ass berbatov! You are not in Europe and not all that-go and chase some realistic targets like the Newcastle cast offs

So the cut-and-thrust of this article is actually, probably, we haven't made bids for anyone. Just as I thought.

AFAIK MON let Hangeland slip because he wasn't prepared to wait for the defender to see whether Copenhagen qualified for CL but that could be a filthy rumour.

I remember saying we should snap this guy up on some boards and heaping praise on him early in the season to much scorn and derision. Now he's flavour of the month and people want us to do a MON and pay well over the odds for a player that was readily available for far less a season ago. Funny ol' game...

there was a few Spurs must sell before they buy stories only a week ago - maybe because Levy and co are sick of bank rolling your luxury transfers, quick buy some more strikers and right backs lads!

If Ash did want to leave i'm sure he'd go straight to Chelsea rather than to Spurs and then get cashed in on a year later and end up at Chelsea anyhow.

Spurs fans are as deluded as Newcastle fans, you're not a big team, and just because you're in London and loads of the press make up b*llocks about who you will sign doesn't mean you're a big daddy.

so was youngs form as good at the 2nd half of the season as 1st was gabby as good when heskey rolled up carew how many goals did he socre?

how many times did villa beat tottenham last season

Great article, really enjoyed reading it and couldn't agree more. I don't think Young would come to Spurs, I personally think that at the moment it would be a backward step for him especially as we don't have european football next season. And Carew coming... No Chance. They're two quality players and I think that they are key to your success next season. If Harry does pull off the unthinkable and get them then I will have the biggest grin for the next 2 weeks. Best of luck for next season COYS!!

i don't think anyone is saying Villa didn't have a crap second season or saying that Young didn't fade out in the second half. No-one is saying we should make loads of big signings and challenge Arsenal either, well maybe we'd like that - but most know this is unlikely at present - till we see MON and Randy rumble slowly into gear again.

we beat Spurs once and you beat us once is the simple answer elmotheyido, not sure what else you expected anyone to say. Oh and you beat us 2:0 in Fifa 09, but that doesn't really count.

I'm sure Spurs could afford to by Ash for 25mil or whatever, but right now you dont have much to offer Europe wise - although i'm sure that will change if you get some stability and stop buying players you dont need. I hate Arry but he is a good manager.

Watch Villa become a flash in the pan club, you had one half decent season (and the wheels were falling of your bandwagon towards the end) and your talking like you are a fashionable club to play for.
Ashley Young is a Tottenham fan so is Barry. If i were a professional i would rather play for Spurs than Villa.
Villa will not attract the names to the club like Tottenham do, europe or not.
Villa should be grateful they had a half good season as this will be the last time you qualify for Europe in a long time.

1-Liverpool
2- Chelsea
3- Man.Utd
4- Arsenal (regretably)
5- Tottenham
6- Everton
7- Man City (will take time to build a club)
8- West Ham
9- Aston Villa
10- Fulham
11- Portsmouth

That is how the top half of the premiership will finish next season.
Villa and Fulham do not have the squad quality or depth to play in Europe and League. Europa league is now 17 games to the final.
Since Redkanpp took over and looking at our average points per game ratio, if we had him from the beginning of the season we would of finished 5th. FACT

elmotheyido pretty sure villa beat tottenham at the start of the season and ashley young made huddlestone look like a schoolboy when he set up the first goal. went inside him and huddlestone was looking the other way if i recall correctly.. but hey, he cant be that good if he has only been in the premier league team of the season 2 years running, picked up player of the month 3 times this season, and been given the young player of the year award.. no, you're right, he's not all that. he may not actually be worth 40mil but thats what MON would want offered if he were to part with the player that he sees as one of the most integral parts of villa's future success.

(this is the part where loads of villa fans post about the european cup decades ago ZZZzzzzzzzzz)...villa fans need to wind their necks in afew notches as your not the team (yet) alot of you think you are...youv'e just sold your captain and best player to the club who managed 10th place this season..your rock in defence is also gone...plenty for you to worry about for next season, without bleating on about spurs.

I think the issue is Spurs have done t*t all for years and yet strut around like they are the Real Madrid of London.

I don't know any Villa fans who have been bigging ourselves up like you describe, we are all pretty grounded, when we're sh*t we know we are sh*t. and yes losing barry and laursen is a massive loss.. no villa fans are denying that.. it is essentially 1 step forward 2 steps backwards.. but lerner vowed to open the coffers again this season, and, say that he is willing to part with another 55mil, (plus the 12mill earned for barry), this means we could have around 65-70mill at our disposal to try and fill these gaps and strengthen.. lets just hope we spend it a little more wisely than what you lot did last summer ey!

i think there is very little difference between both teams and their current ambitions, Spurs will be looking to continue to improve next season and get some overall stability, Villa will be looking to consolidate what they've achieved next season - and not go backwards.

But if i were a Villan i would be concerned at the lose of key players on top of the slump in form, as it is almost exactly what happened to us the season before.

Now when using FACT here's a tip: Your going to look stupid anyway but you sure as hell want to make sure it IS a FACT!

I mean you look stupid enough as it is - right?!

When Harry took over you had 2 points from 8 games. You finished on 51pt. So he got 49 from 30 games. 1.63 per game. So 1.63 x 38 = 62points. The same as us - 1pt below Everton.

Now to help you out I looked and you would have had a +5 goal differnce too - taking you into 7th behind us on goal differnce but EQUAL on points.

So for this period where you did so damn awsome and we did rubbish we still finsihed above you... I'd also guess Everton would have 70pts or so as they had a bad atart to the seaston too. But if were going to cherry pick I'd go for the 1st 20 games were we end up finishing in the top4.. ta!

Yup spot on.. Villa, Everton, Man City & Spurs are all about the same in 'big club' sense depending how you count history, trophy count, fan base etc..

In the big picture football wise we're all big big establshed PL clubs but the truth is we've all done fxx all for years.

Let just be honest any one of us has a (small) chance at the top4 and having a good season in the cup, nipping into 5th above the others etc.. but its just that a chance.

That was the best post on here madladdy.

Basically for any of us to sneak into 4th would be a fluke and focus around our best players not getting injured and one of the hallowed Sky4 having a bad patch (Spurs and Villa near benefitted from slips by Arsenal - whilst Everton have done it once so there is hope).

The way teams like us play and sit(usually middle)we are always a four game winning run away from the top 5 and a four game losing run from the relegation zone (ok maybe in Villa's case we had such a good winning run that last season that rule didn't apply but most seasons it would).

Spurs need some consistency, it strikes me that Harry doesn't know what his best 11 is and wants to get rid of a lot of your players, now if he is doing a rebuilding excersize you will in theory start the season slowly while all the new players etc bed in.

Villa - need to rebuild confidence and replace two of our most important players ever in recent years, plus bring in quite a few new faces to build on such a tiny squad. Add to this MON needs to back the squad players we have got that are criminally underused or sell them. I have no idea how this will pan out. I think the biggest issue is our defence.

I'm not doing an analysis of Everton as i can't be arsed, we all know they have a great manager and a great team - and proved that by finishing the last two seasons above us both, can't say i cried when they lost in the cup though.

are you sure ash would go straight to chelsea? what you mean the same way barry left you for a champs league team LOL...no barry no laursen...enjoy your little outing in the europa league next season as im sure it will be your last outing for a while!...you will not replace those 2 players with...

Typical cockney here. Jealous of our ambitions, jealous of our manager and jealous of the players were linked with because your scared that MON might actually make them a somebody and they will help us climb up the table. Yeh barry went to man city, not a champions league team but at least he didnt go to you c***s. Face it your manager is arragont and nobody likes him thats why half your team wants to leave and thats why half the players wont come to you. Anyways lucky to get top 10???? C'mon be serious mate, i guarentee we will finish higher than you even without laursen and Barry.

5- Tottenham
6- Everton
7- Man City (will take time to build a club)

FACT *******

You spurs fans do make me laugh, every single season you spend more than £100M on shit players then have the nerve to say only the good players come to spurs and wouldn't come to the villa???

Then put me straight, how is it that your always shit, finish below us and are the laughing stock of the premier league..every year?? I'm having difficulty understanding?

Here's to a few good signings in the summer, MON will have a barry replacement lined up,prob already a deal just about done, and it wont be that shite bentley.

a RB,CB,CM,LM,and a striker and a couple of EXPERIENCED squad players to help our youngsters to win the eurovisiona league shield and 2nd in premiership for the 1st squad...

Check the stats you moron - since the Premierleague started in 1992 we have finished 5th overall - two places above Spurs - even Newcastle finished above Spurs. So congratulations on proving yourself the biggest arseh*le ever seen since 'Mr Fister 4: Elbow Deep In Arse' was viewed on an IMAX cinema screen.

Yep evene a link to prove it - enjoy

such a nuffy.. what is all this crap about our ambitions? have u checked your own backyard or are you js f*cken blind.. you're selling 14 of your players including whydobrummiessoundlikeratswithhayfever's acclaimed pavlyuchenko who scored a whopping FIVE league goals... and you will probably sell them all at a loss because nobody there made any impression on anyone that matters last season.. not any good impressions anyway (apart from maybe aaron lennon)! meanwhile, we finished with a one-two in the PFA young player of the year awards and all you can come up with is 'but we finished above you 2 years ago'.. who cares! just because you finished above us in like 1785 doesnt mean you're a better team, its ancient history!

Realistically, nobody knows what is going to happen this season. I don't think it can be argued against that Villa are in a far better position than Spurs..given we are only losing two players as opposed to 14! Admittedly those two players are probably as good as those 14 combined, but we won't go there.

In all seriousness though, we have suffered a major loss with Barry and Laursen gone. I feel that while Barry was inspirational, he will actually be easier to replace than Laursen, as there are plenty of good attacking CM out there. Laursen was literally what held our back line together. Our front line are always going to be able to score goals and although it would be nice to sign a superstar midfielder, I think the money will be better spent on solidifying our backline. Our problem wasn't scoring enough goals last season, it was conceding too many. Let's hope that Cuellar has what it takes and can start showing his true colours, much as Petrov did this season.

Dan, Deano, good posts. Brian, I like your sense of humour

I know this 'debate' has probably ended, but I think Carteltheyid (twat) must be 15 years old. Villa finshed runners-up (that's 2nd) in the inaugural prem season (that means 1st) and fourth when Brian Little was in charge. So how about getting your facts right and do a little research before you make yourself look any more fookin irritating than you already are. Prat!

How nice of Villa to be gratefully prepared to snap up all of the spuds cast-offs. I`ll have to check if the arse are due any more sell-on money if you take bentley off their hands

Watch Villa become a flash in the pan club, you had one half decent season (and the wheels were falling of your bandwagon towards the end) and your talking like you are a fashionable club to play for.
Ashley Young is a Tottenham fan so is Barry. If i were a professional i would rather play...

i never used to have a problem with villa fans, until recently! the last 2 seasons you have been bigging yourselves up like world beaters and constantly feel the need to say how superior you are to spurs...have villa managed back to back 5th place finishes recently???? in fact have you managed one...

Has this changed into the TH blog website or what! Look last year we faded and still finished higher than you lot. You had a better second half and you must admit, if you didn't you would have been relegated. We are still building a team which MON has a 10 year plan. (if he doesn't go managing England or Man Utd.........will harry be going any where??? don't think so !!!!) You need to wake up and smell the coffee....this is the pinicle of Harry's career which is managing a mid table team. We will finish in the top 6 next year and to be honest...the giant has woke up now deadly doug has left. Last but not least....if you haven't got anything constructive to say go back on your own blog website and let real villa football fans discuss real issues and not pipe dreams now you have a 'middle of the road' manager
