That Joey Barton rumour just won't go away

Friday, 05 September 08, 10:14 AM · Comments (106)

Since we reported the Daily Mirror 'exclusive' about MON chasing Joey Barton, the rumour has not gone away.

Several 'news' agencies have reported over the last few days that we are going to go back in for him as a long-term replacement for GB.

This assumes two things; 1) we are expecting to lose GB and 2) MON rates Barton as the same as GB. I expect one of those may be true at some point, but that could be Barton being better than GB once GB retires rather than GB leaves. But we can't rule that out at some point in the next 12 months.

I know Barton is a bit of a thug but at some point he is bound to grow up and see the error of his ways. Or is he?

I'd hope so because he is an excellent player on his day and if he put the effort into his career that he puts into causing trouble then MON could make him an England regular.

I know many people don't share this view with me and I'm happy with that; but I think, a la Jermaine Pennant, that he could change his ways in the right environment. And what better environment than within the 'family' we have at Villa Park?

I may get slated for this, but I think if we can get him for a decent price and a decent salary then we should have him. I was hoping we would go in for him when he was leaving Man City, but I think in hindsight that would have been a mistake.

Things have happened in between that might just make him change - and if he wants to resurrect his sorry career there is only one man that will do it and one place to do it: with Martin O'Neill at Aston Villa.

Soz, luke, can't agree with you on this one, MON has a good dressing room at the moment and Barton would ruin that. IMO the only good price would be they pay us 10 mill to take him off their hands!!

I think barton is a liability how many games would we finish with 11 on the pitch if he played? not many. He's not good enough to replace GB anyway. If we have to replace him we have to replace him with class and barton doesn't come under that.

Tough one this. Good player. Even with all the baggage. I guess if we got him on loan or on a free during the window I could see the reasoning behind that.

I guess it all comes down to your thoughts around 'forgiveness'. Can people change? Or should people be punished for their crimes forever and a day? You'd have to look into your own consciences for an answer to that.

Does Joey Barton deserve a chance anywhere? IMHO no.

I don't think he should have been allowed to play for Newcastle, it discuses me that a thug like Barton gets paid huge sums of money for playing football.

Loan deal maybe - so we can gve him back if need be!! Wouldn't want to spend any money on him, and he will always receive abuse form opposition fans from now on. As far as his on pitch disciplinary record is concerned Jay_Villafan, he has only ben sent off 3 times in his career. Also worth a mention while I was looking at stats (BBC website) Gareth is due to play his 400th gamme for Villa next time out - congratulations and hope he makes his 500th with Villa too!

The last game Barton came on he committed a foul within a couple of minutes. Did you see the look on his face after commiting the foul. He loved it in an evil sh*t sort of way and he loved it. He is a criminal in all sense of the word, on and off pitch. I've seen enough criminals and their behaviour, mannerisms, expressions and non-verbal-communications in my time to know if someone has a criminal or bad 'mind-set'.

The answer is ....Nooooooooooo!

Sorry Luke, but there's no way this great club of ours would sign such a disruptive influence......NOT A CHANCE.

He has shown the odd good touch but most of those were left hooks to the face of a child outside Maccy D's.

Barton should try putting in a challenge on big Duncan Ferguson!!!

Good player, bad attitude

If we got him on a loan in January for the rest of the season, and he developed a better attitude under MON, i'd support him the same as i support the rest of the squad.

He is a good player and would add to Aston Villa in terms of quality, just not enough to outway the risk that bringing him here could be IMO.

I think he needs to take a step down to a smaller club than Newcastle, to show he wants to straighten out. Then have a clean spell there and play the footbal we all know he can.If he does this i'm sure then fans at top ten premier league clubs would be more welcoming to Joey Barton.

If a Minkowski spacetime contains a compact region Ω, and if the topology of Ω is of the form Ω ~ R x Σ, where Σ is a three-manifold of nontrivial topology, whose boundary has topology of the form dΣ ~ S2, and if, furthermore, the hypersurfaces Σ are all spacelike, then the region Ω contains a quasipermanent intra-universe wormhole.

Just to clarify matters Bob. I was right about that wormhole thing in ref to your post that moved places. The post you wrote did not jump time, it move though space in the same time. You mentioned time, I mentioned jumping back and forth between dimensions (between old and new blogs) Therefore the wormhole theory. So there....I'm right for once... =D

The 'foul' you are refering to was actually a good tackle, he got the ball and then the player. I do agree he is a criminal and has a bad mind set.

MON could work with him and develop him as a player but he'll never be as good as barry and he'll never change his temperment. We have so many midfielders at villa and dont need any more.

As a Yank I have followed AmFooty all my life. There are several examples of teams picking up "bad guys" on the cheap, and, of course, it has gone both ways--sometimes the guy tears up his new team, just like he did his old, and sometimes the guy "gets it" and ends up being a team leader. My AmFooty team (Dallas Cowboys) about ten years or so ago hired a guy to oversee a counseling program with the team to deal with such characters, and it has been a huge success. Further, they also have the family type atmosphere that I have seen a few people mention on this site that Villa has.

I say all this to say that if conditions were right, maybe Barton could mend his ways and end up a successful Villan. Stranger things have happened!!

point taken but seriously this guy may just end up seriously hurting a fellow player or even killing someone, i just dont see him being the type of player that martin o'neill would appriciate as a person he picks his player by their nature and attitude....

the guy could become the next roy keane but only fergie was able to control him, maybe he's best going to work under fergie who will read him the riot act

Joey Barton is not welcome at Villa Park, shouldn't even be playing football.

Stupid thing to say Luke, you are more than entitled to your opinion but I still think its the most stupid thing you have said yet.

The man is violent why should he be given a job, what sort of message does that send out to people employing a muppet like Barton?

Theres no business sense him buying him too, you can't sell him for much clubs keep off loading him.

Absolutely no way, the man is an absolute idiot and will not improve our squad.

If he is an eventual successor to GB, MON may as well go out and but a top prospect from the championship without a criminal record.

Cant stand Joey Barton or anything he is associated with or stands for.

To be fair, he does play a game designed for idiots. He is simply rather high profile in his idiocy. A lot of them are just as evil/stupid but have a little more cunning in their badness.

He is a lost sheep. The shepherd loves them more than the rest. Maybe we will see him in MON's flock.

:\ Ohh no! Please MON don't sign Barton...He's trouble and he's a man on a mission 2 mess things up! I agree that people should always be given the benefit of the doubt or at least a 2nd chance...however how many chances has Joey had to prove the doubters wrong??? Loads...
If we do sign him i will support him and hope that O'Neil can reign him in. Lets just hope Barton doesn't mess up our dressing room atmosphere...He's a decent player but a bit of a nutter! Time will tell if Joey changes his attitude after all he surely knows its his last chance saloon!

Thats a shocker, I wouldnt have Barton in Claret and Blue. I think the FA should make a decision and give him a lifetime ban. At least then Newcastle dont have to release him and watch another team pickup the scumbag for nothing.

i recon he should be put in the centre circle of wembley with a full crowd and ever single football teams squad surrounding the pitch to just stare at him, he'll probably pi** himself into changing his attitude....god knows taking money off him wont change his behaviour! but if he knows the whole premiership is watching to make him change it just might work....if it dont think of all them people rushing the pitch to kick s**t out of him ;)

Everyone deserves a second chance.. I bet everyone on here has made mistakes they regret?? And the difference is Barton is famous footballer! So what he's only human regardless of the money.

If we was only talking his about ability we would all be saying what a great signing. Lets have him.

I remember a few years ago Joey B went public that he should be playing for England, that he is a better footballler than half the then England midfield. Many serious football brains agreed with him. Ok, so he has been a violent thug, but he is still a good footballer and if he did come to Villa I would expect him to toe the line as much as I would expect the Villa faithful to NOT get on his back. Having said that; I hope that we don't need to buy a "dodgy" replacement for GB, if we did buy him I would expect MON to put his foot down with a firm hand to keep him on the straight and narrow.

If he can pass, tackle and score. If he says he loves the Villa. If he doesn't wanna play for the scousers. If he just needs a bit of love. Joey come home.

As a player, on his day i think he would be a good addition-especially under O'neills influence. But as a person i cant say i like him.

However, if any1 can change him MON is the man. And if oneil signs him i will have faith and appreciate that he knows better than me.

As purely a footballer, I like him! As a person he is a bully, a yob and appears to be an arrogant tw*t, but as I said as a footballer I do like him and I think he would be an ideal replacement for GB!

Two things we have to face here:

1)

rest of my comment..

1) GB is going to leave! We all have to face reality on that issue

2) Has MON let us down yet in his tenure at the Villa? No in my opinion, so have faith in MON abilities if he fancies this player. If anyone can get this lad to sort their life out, it is MON

if MON wants him and gets him, I will back him all the way!

a chelsea youngster who has been onloan to various dutch squads has been banned for a year after spitting at a ref, although a disgusting thing to do surely its equaly as bad, if not worse that joey barton kicks the crap out of a team mate and he only gets a 6 match ban?

A Barton has had enough chances to get it right, I would be livid if we signed him.

forget barton, as a barry replacement!!!

theres 3 other options

1) keep barry, (which i reckon i will)

2) sidwell is a good enough replacement

3) an even longer term replacement, johnson from man city, he'll be availale soon, if they spend a bucket loads of money
