The Aston Villa five year plan, or lack thereof

Friday, 11 January 08, 08:45 AM · Comments (34)

I've been out this morning, doing my proper job for change, which is why if you've posted something and you didn't see it until now or you'd sent something in and I'd not replied, I apologise.

For the three of you who emailed in the link to the BBC story; I've just read it and thanks but I'm afraid you've all used too many swear words for me to publish what you'd like me to publish.

The article has Martin O'Neill talking about the sacking of Fat Sam. In it he basically says it is crazy that a manager can be sacked after 8 months, which I agree, but it's big business that to some extent, demands instant results and having watched Newcastle this season I can understand why it has happened, even if I disagree.

Martin O'Neill also talks about the five year plan, and he was quite specific; "You don't get time in football. I'd love to say I have a five-year plan or ideas for the youth team. Have a bit of sense - it just doesn't happen."

It is stupid that a manager doesn't get a proper chance at doing his job and football carries more pressure than most but at the same time they're all compensated for that, but I've watched Newcastle this season and the football was well below what I expected from that group of players.

It's not the same football that you'd get at Bolton last season but if you watch a Newcastle game from this season and a Bolton one from last season you will see the same things happening. But maybe he just needed longer - we'll never know now.

But Allardyce was never going to win anything at Newcastle - he was only ever going to achieve what he achieved at Bolton and while they say you should never go back, I wouldn't be surprised to see him back at Bolton one day.

The point of this post though isn't really about Sam Allardyce and his 8 months. It's about what Martin O'Neill said about the five year plan. He's actually said 'it doesn't happen'.

Were we all led down the garden path when we were sold on this five year plan? It reads like it but I'm sure it was taken out of context and he was maybe referring to something else.

Either way, as long as we finish 9th or above this season we're moving in the right direction for Champions League football within five years. I would however like the club to come out and say the plan is to win the Premier League in ten years - then we'd all buy into it wouldn't we!

Just read more of that MON waffle, he tries to draw a parallel to the real world with real workers, does he know that he is in the entertainment world not scientific/research/medical/aid or anything even remotely beneficial to the health and technological advancement of humanity, he and his workers kick a football around, does he know how much Allardyce will get in a few months compared to a nurse or consultant or aid worker? Boo Hoo my heart bleeds for Alardyce and his millions, now he will have to buy a mansion in jamaica next to Mclaren, yeah real failures aren't they with their mansion and servants and cars and crap haircuts

he was talking about in general, a manger is employed with the idea of a 5 year play, as with MON, yet his point is that it is no longer possible to achieve it as no time is given. i dont think it is a reference to villa, tho i might be wrong....

Taglor, you talk so much rubbish what Martin is drawing a parallel to is the fact that in a job that is outside the media spotlight you get a chance to put things right, and are not expected to have an instant result or fix. Things take time to develop and to get right even when you get a blip things can still be fixed if given time.
In the goldfish bowel that is football the modern managers are given very little time to get things correct and to have a team playing how they want. And if the chairman were a bit more forgiving then the team would progress.
This is the same in any line of work, not just the benefit of mankind jobs you have listed.

Maybe not the right place to put this info but had a conversation with a very good business friend of mine today. His father works at Reading (close to the team) and he told me Duberry is definitely not playing tomorrow and due to lack of defensive players they will resort to 5 at the back so looks like it might be a crap game. He also told me that Leroy Lita's attitude is why he doesnt play and that Coppell is teaching him a lesson. I bet we could get him for sensible money and he's definitely a player that would excite you coming from the bench (far more than Luke).

Wasn't the 5 year plan Randy's not MON's? Don't think I ever heard MON say he had his own 5 year plan for Villa. You say Big Sam was never gonna win anything with Newcastle... Who has? They haven't won anything for over 50 years. What gives them a God given right to win things?

Chrisodon Wrote: | 21.58GMT | Jan 11, 2008

@ Coeur de lion your comment is just stupid. How do you know there isn't a nurse very talented at football. but decided he'd go for a job which can be rewarding ? so don't say fuck nurse's because it just makes you look stupid. And who knows that nurse you said fuck um too could one day save you or someone in your family.

Well said Chrisodon

Personally I think MON was relating it to his own position here, we all bought the 5 year plan Randy was bounding around when he came, come February 2007 there was a lot of people who started questioning MON and it would of been able to let the axe fall, fortunately Randy didn't and look where we are, the relevance to Big Sam is he didn't get a full go at things and that was what MON was saying

Honestly Ive got a really bad feeling about MON, I think he will bring success to Villa but I suspect he is in line for the United Job. I think he will stay with us for another 3/4 seasons and then just as we are on the verge of something amazing he will leave for United. We wont get anybody half as good to replace him and we will decline again.

For the neutral that will be good to see because think of what a manager like MON could do with a massive budget and a world class group of players.

I dont know though thats just my feelings on it. I hope it doesnt happen.

Thanks chrisondon and pongo, I am only commenting with tongue in cheek when I post like the one above, I can't help it, it's just that I know I will get slated for being different and it just makes me laugh too much to stop knowing that there are people that won't allow any questioning of Villa whatsoever. I think Villa have been doing great and I have really enjoyed watching them lately, I just get jealous when I see that Chelsea signed Anelka and we are looking at Doyle. Maybe I should leave anything to do with the outside world at the door and just stick to footy.

Why the hell are you lot bothered about what MON said about Sam Allardyce. Newcastle are rubbish. They go on about being a massive club with 52000 fans at every game. Its because there the only club. If Villa were the only club in Birmingham and surrounding areas we'd have the 40,000 that come the Villa, 20,000 that go the albion and 19,000 that go the sty. Thats 79000 at every game.

MON is a living legend and im disgusted that you so called Villa fans are slaggin him off. You must be the fickle lot that twat O'Leary was on about.

Up The Villa!

At least if he did that he would stay true to his word, to me it appeared to be first year consolidate team, second year build up to decent top half team, third year europe.

At the moment he's probably thinking nick into Europe this year and he's a year ahead of himself and then we can get some real big talent in.

Question, who would of loved to see Anelka here?
Why did he go Bolton in the first place? European fooball?

We are all on here because we love the Villa, maybe we get carried away with our posts but I don't see the point of us being on here and critising the club, management or the team.

Northstandholteender I must disagree with your comment - 79,000 every game? We can't sell 42,000 every game! Who were the closest Prem team to us last season? Sheffield? What were our ticket sales like then? Please be realistic

MON? United? I feel he has quite a bit of work to do with Villa first, but he would deserve the job if Fergie ever calls it a day. I'm not so sure he's the one to take us to the very top so to speak, but there is no doubt that we have made good progress under him so far.

oh and taglor is my hero!

Well, remember one thing. As much as M.O.N is loved by all at Villa, he is on a rolling contract just like he was at Celtic. He stayed there amongst plenty of speculation though so I hope he can stay with us. Refusal of the England job was a good sign and he seems happy enough at Villa because he's here to do a job, just like at Celtic and Leicester.

How many managers have we had since the premiership has started, who have lasted 5 years? I think what M.O.N meant was that it only takes 1 bad season, or even half a season these days, and you can kiss goodbye to that 5 year plan!!

It's interesting to note that when we had a bit of a slump last year, around Christmas, we were down in around 14-15th place, yet no one said a word about M.O.N. It just goes to show how respected he is, and yet we find Allardyce getting the boot when Newcastle are in 11th place and the transfer window just open so all was not lost.

I suppose different chairmen work in different ways but it's good to see that Lerner hardly says a word, leaving everything down to M.O.N. The only area that M.O.N needs to work on is the transfer policy, but hopefully he'll a few rabbits out of the hat this month and in the summer!!

Viva la revolution and UP THE VILLA!!!

The 5 year plan idea sucked from the word go. No club can quantify how long it will take to achieve success, it all smelt a little of get out of jail card in case things weren't progressing fast enough. Either way, the ambition of this club will be finally clear over this month and next summer. I cannot see fans putting up with another summer like last year, when the club didn't even manage to cover each position on the field which is abc of football, let's be honest. 19 days to go.

I suggest that the 5 year plan is kicking off a little faster than MON and Randy anticipated...i mean, joint 4th spot in early January !
We now have the opportunity to get the talent we need to push for the Euro spot. We are in an excellent position and i'd hate to think we'll see the transfer opportunity wasted.
MON needs to spend big to realise the ambitions of this great young team he as...who the players are only MON knows but we all know where our weaknesses lie.
I'd personally be over the moon with a right back who can get forward, an out and out right winger (if Ash is gonna stay on the left), a creative attacking midfielder/striker of the Merson mould (Robbie Keane anyone?) or a big name experienced striker.
I'd love MON to do a Wenger and uncover a shedload of top European talent for very little money but as we all know, none the Villa scouts have a passport !
Am i asking too much ?
Lets kick on anyhow, we're doing great !
UP THE VILLA ;) ;)

i was a bit concerned about the attendance against manure in the cup but was excusable because of the way the tickets were allocated. yesterdays gate was way down again for no reason i can discern , and don't blame apres Christmas poverty because it was Christmas in Manchester and London too......i wonder how Randy Lerner will react if our crowd falls below expected levels on a regular basis.....

MON was making a general point I thought about time. The club has a five year plan for ground development and improvements etc. On Taglors general point and rich footballers and managers we are all paid the amount others are willing to pay for our skills. Its not a footballers fault his skills are in high demand and attract high wages. Sadly for me my own skills and talents have never been worth a can of beans but I don't mind others earning millions, and in the case of the current Villa team they give me a lot of entertainment and pleasure. One last thing why when we have one of the best Managers in europe do some have to keep moaning at him, he transformed this club already so why not just be grateful he chose us.
