The Doc's Sunday Aston Villa Clinic

Sunday, 24 August 08, 09:51 AM · Comments (64)

I think the philosophy went something like this: we scored a bagful of goals last season, and let a bagful in as well. All we need to do is spend loads of money on a few new defenders and Champions League, here we come.

Err, not. Twenty-four million squiddlies later, plus a couple of goalkeepers, an early return for Curtis and an armband for Martin Laursen, and our defence looks more like The Keystone Cops than ever.

All Stoke City needed to do was chuck the ball into Villa's box to turn supposedly top-notch defenders into quivering blancmanges.

"Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose".

Dare I suggest some work on the training ground, Martin? Any volunteers to chuck the ball in, folks?

Though I scarcely wish to dwell on events at the Britannia Stadium, it does seem that Villa's inability to cope with sides who are up for a scrap is going to come back and haunt us once again.

Should it not have been blindingly obvious that, after 28 years out of the top flight and stung by certain well-known bookies already paying out on relegation bets, Stoke might just be up for it in their first EPL game at home?

Villa wanted too much time on the ball when they had it, and were slow to close Stoke down when they didn't. This may be the Premier League, but there will be teams who will take points by playing cup football. We should not have been caught off the pace.

The reason Petrov was, again, Villa's best player yesterday is that he actually rolled his sleeves up. Gareth Barry simply didn't.

On the subject of Barry, our thanks must go to Fabio Capello. Before being slotted into Capello's ridiculous midfield in midweek against the Czechs, and before the Italian's puzzling comments about his form after that particular debacle, most Villans thought that Barry was actually playing very well.

The only person who's screwed his head and his form up, Mr Capello, is you.

I felt very much the same way as most Villans when wee Shaun Maloney decided to hot-foot it back to Parkhead this week. Good luck to the lad, shame it didn't work out, pity he wasn't given more of a chance blah blah blah.

So now it turns out he always had misgivings about his move to Villa, and we were never really the club he wanted to play for.

So why in the name of Bonnie Prince Charlie did ye come south in the first place, then, Shaun?

What Maloney surely really means is this: "err, I had no idea the boss was going to sign Ashley Young at the time and, if I'm honest, he's a whole lot better than I am so best lick my wounds and come back to a league where they don't have players of his class".

Come on, Shaun, do us a favour. The Holte End always got behind you and deserves better than this. It casts an interesting light, too, on Villa fans' reluctance to get behind another ex-Hoop Stiliyan Petrov - who has quietly and determinedly stuck to his task, fought for his place and given everything - however successfully - when asked to wear the Claret and Blue.

Men and Bhoys, so to speak.

So it looks like we might have an interesting week on the transfer front, eh? With Santa Cruz staying at Ewood Park, the only strikers I can see us bringing into the fold are Kevin Doyle or Emile Heskey. Neither would get me rushing down to the Sherborne Arms in my underpants, I can tell you.

Perhaps it gets more interesting on the right wing front. With Keegan's priority keeping hold of Michael Owen, perhaps the comedy board at the Magpies will force him to compromise on Milner. And Big Phil has already said, to all intents and purposes, that Shaun Wright-Phillips can leave. Either will do, but let's make sure we get one.....please?

Personally, I will, be glued to Sky Sports News at 23:55 on deadline day expecting the big Villa coup. Let's hope it's not another Shaun Maloney.

And just in case anyone is feeling down after this weekend's results, just remember all the banter with Spurs fans on this Blog over the past two seasons. Now that should bring a smile back to your faces!

To be honest, although I was gutted by the winning goal, I wasn't as bothered as some. Certainly not the sort of side Villa enjoy playing...And I doubt many others will, either.

Thuggish. Effective, to a point, but to my mind, the referee keeps a team like Stoke in these games by not clamping down on what is an obvious strategy to foul and stop play at any opportunity. My only real concern was that someone in claret and blue was going to get hurt. Our goals were good. They had one good goal, a dodgy penalty, and a lucky header to win it. Friedel's reaction said it all. There are days like that.

So, no the defending at the end wasn't good enough. From schoolboy days, you just want to get the boot in and get it out. And yes, I do wonder where all the midfielders are at sometimes, either not coming up and keeping the ball in the opponent's half, or not getting stuck in and blunting breaks going the other way. Watching it on the internet...well, very hard to tell much about individual players' performances and positioning.

But if Stoke hadn't been gifted a lead, I doubt very much the game would've played out the same. And while the defensive shuffling was a bit puzzling (NRC should've just come out), I do applaud MON taking off a FB for a RW in looking for the win. Maybe he left it too late, and maybe the Hare should've been set loose, but it was a positive substitution nonetheless.

AVMark
AVMark Wrote: | 21.43BST | Aug 24, 2008

The problem as I see it is in the middle of the park. NRC doesn't want to play on the right - and I don't blame him - he knows he's on the bench as soon as Sidwell is fit. I don't believe Laursen as the senior guy (let alone skipper) is bossing the line enough. We are frequently caught too deep. You say Petrov had a good game but he is playing in the most important position on the pitch. It is up to him to keep the shape and he is not a good defensive player. Someone in that position has to keep himself between the opposition and his centre halves to stop them from getting pulled about.

Until we sort out the D in front of our penalty area and ten yards in front we will continue to ship goals.

In a game like yesterday Barry's role becomes peripheral. he is an attacking option. He can't tackle and he's very slow footed. He hasn't got the pace to track back effectively. That's just the nature of his game and it's up to the more defensive midfielders to allow him the space to play.

I will wait with baited breathe for the transfer deadline and dependent on who we sign I will be as good as my word and quit bothering with the Villa, yes I will still support them but only with a passing interest, I will not bother watching or paying money towards them for the 21st empty season in a row. I will start watching my local team Dorchester Town who I am going to see tomorrow who had a cracking 4-4 game yesterday. I am sick of being negative myself and unless we sign 4-5 high quality players it will be GUARANTEED another mediocre season with the top 4 BORING the premiership to death. So if we don't sign anyone noteworthy I will stop being a whinger and stop wasting my time with more dross. If MON and RL pull it out of the bag with signings I will repent and get behind them 100%. This is no mere flash in the pan it is a steady dose of mediocrity over 2 decades and enough is enough. I do not believe in corporate PR. I will always support Villa but lovingly from afar.

keef Wrote: | 22.58BST | Aug 24, 2008

I agree with a lot of what you are saying Doc and can see the reasons behind your arguments. However, I really believe that a top 4 finish is not beyond us. Liverpool have not played well in their first 2 games scoring 2 late winners and Arsenal could only beat WBA 1-0 and lost to Fulham. A big problem with Villa is the midfield and the lack of cover it gives the back 4. Petrov, as hard working as he is, is not a defensive midfielder and Reo-Coker pushes inside leaving a lot of area for the opposition to attack down our right wing.
The problems are easily sorted. The purchase of a right-sided midfielder and/or playing a 4-5-1 formation with Gabby on the right would give Luke Young some help and the awaited league debut of Sidwell will make us stronger in that department.
Have faith - the result was terrible but it is a marathon not a sprint!

managers comments dont help the team whether its capello with his daft comments or MON with his we need quality in our squad although he is right i dont think it helps the players we have when ya being told ya not much good.
one player he does believe has quality is ashley the comments of being worth 30m seems to be just a message to other clubs who might come sniffing on how much they would have to pay.
reading comments about managers who should be reported for tapping up the likes of wenger and the fat waiter but when i read what arshavin said said about his proposed move to spurs ("i know they want me because oneday ramos phoned me and said he wants me at the club") so what chance is there of stopping this. Agree with you here Doc. At 2-2 it can go either way. If we won many people would start with the 'winningly ugly' cliches and be certain that we are destined for the top 4.

I am interested in the next game and wondering whether Barry will play next week. If Sidwell is fit it would be a good game for him to come back in, and you never know Liverpool could be out of the CL. What better way to put this result out of our minds!

George Templeton Wrote: | 23.23BST | Aug 24, 2008

Doc your diagnosis is fair and kohoutek your post is spot on. But could we wait and see what this defence does once Carlos Cuellar (the SPL player of the year) is fit and in the side. Having him yesterday would've made a difference for the whole defence. He's 6-3 and a commanding presence. If we can't defend with him in the side, then we have a problem.

Amog Wrote: | 23.37BST | Aug 24, 2008

I wish we'd start getting behind Petrov. He works so hard for the team and gets no credit for it. I know hard work isn't everything, but if the rest of the team grafted like he did, we'd be much more of a force to be reckoned with. Everyone knows we need a right winger and i'd be tempted to play a poorly performing Routledge in his correct position than NRC in his wrong position. This is old news though.

Christian
Christian Wrote: | 23.44BST | Aug 24, 2008

I agree with VijayD, I think we're in a bit of trouble. We finished in a very flattering position last year, and MON has done virtually NOTHING to improve us. A second rate left back for Bouma, a bog standard right back to relieve the gaping hole in our defence (O'Neill you should've been sacked last summer for not filling it), and in my opinion the jury's still out on Sidwell. Friedel's a good signing, but he isn't going to influence games is he? Does this oaf not realise our DESPERATION for a right winger- for 2 seasons!- and a striker??!!!!! Making average players play a bit better than average is acceptable at Leicester and Celtic, but this is Villa and I really feel he is out of his depth.
I know fans are saying 'well, Liverpool struggled too', yes, but they still WON! Played poor but won.
What has infuriated me more than anything else is MON's almost 'smirk' after the game and saying (i'll paraphrase) 'well, let's be positive, we only got beaten in the 94th minute' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've never heard such bullsh*t in all my life, this is Stoke and the performance was a disgrace. Get some balls MON and tell the truth.
I'm a really hurt, angry Villa fan. I'm not fickle either, this isn't a kneejerk reaction. I'll cheer the boys on for 90 mins but there are big, big questions to be asked of MON...

Well i must admit i didnt think that all we needed to do was buy some defenders and off we go to the champions league. Ive said it time and time again, we needed an attacking midfielder. We just dont have the quality in the midfield at the moment. We needed to sell Barry and get in a creative player. Anyway, we wont be doing that (atleast not until Jan) this season.

By the way Fitzy, when was the last time you went to your local teams match? I went last weekend to see our team HJK Helsinki blow a 2-0 half time lead to KuPO to lose 2-3. Its not the most visually pleasing stuff at times but no one demands a transfer, no one complains that their wages are too low, no one slags off team mates or coaches in the media. Everyone puts in a great effort and quite often its good enough for a win. There are a few egos but it is a team game and a refreshing change to all of this marketed, over hyped soap opera that is the Premier League. Plus the boys love a beer with us who come out to watch. I love Villa, but fuck me there have been some hard frustrating times. Non more so than recently. I mean we are almost there but then the Stoke match...........Its up to the great one MON to pull out all stops before the deadline before the momentum comes to a halt or we will be back with Boro, Newcastle and West Ham.........

You or should i say we can't trust villa if we are leading 1-0 you know its gonna end a draw if we 2-0 up it ends a draw we need to be a least 3 goals clear to secure the 3 points(like city today) its scary when u think about it.

Laursen got done badly for all his ex, no one was marking the posts and i've never seen us get so nervous from long throwing in's from stoke...........no not milan........stoke city?

Liverpool are gonna win 2-1 next Sunday, i can get a ticket... but do i sound like a complete arse if i say i don't really wanna go now >:(

When is AVFC.co.uk gonna stop feeding us bull, you go onto the OS and they whitewash everything, why don't they just say what happened????
Sorry fans it was a very poor performance and we didn't turn up! Some people are saying 'they had their mind on next sunday 'WHY' we needed to beat stoke because we never beat the pool. I will always like gregory to oneil, least we had a little flair we ginola and carbone, trusty southgate, magic merson.....even though we didn't get any success i like the team better then these jokers

I don't like and they never will be a hero in my eyes

Joker oke Cokey Coker
Stilian Stupid pillak Petrov
Gabby You can't ha'trick me
Gareth i play good for 1 then rubbish for 2 barry
Average L.Young, Shorey is pure class and Fridel looks like a old ass man in goal when i see fridel i picture him with his cane and pipe making strides to sit on his chesterfield

Get some fcuking decent talent in soon oneil, Young still hasn't signed that deal yet maybe he has seen the light aswell, i don't care who played well in a match we shouldn't have lost..........a draw a least? 8)

We always put in a game or two like that every season so better to get it out of the way early....Plus, if we beat them off the pitch, new signings might not have been as urgent. Im not bothered about the defeat. Stoke were a big bananna skin with their first home game being treated like a cup match. I still think UEFA cup will hit us hard in the PL unless we sign 2-3 more players before deadline. Bring on the pool and get GB out to Arsenal quick as he will soon develop Berbatovoitas disease and his head will be at the next transfer window.

Get over it...it's one game....Yes they played like a bunch of Sunday morning pub team players (although I have seen my local pub team play better on one occasion) but if they learn from this howler then fine....There's always going to be one of these results for every team. It's when it happens all the time we need to start worrying!

I take it if we win against the Pool they will be the best footballers on earth? How things will have changed in a week. Only six days earlier the general opinion on here was we are going to beat anyone that we play, now we are dead and buried after 2 matches...what's all that about. Are we going to have this rollercoaster after every match. If so we may aswell just copy this thread and publish a good and bad report for if we win or lose.

I didn't like what happened yesterday and I'm the first one to get on MON's back for not having sorted RB position over past two years and think he flucked up in January by not strengthening etc, but I feel the clubs going in the right direction....MON has a plan to build and not have a yearly 'quick fix'. He's made some duff signings yes, but I suppose he signed them for the right reasons!

MON, knows in his heart he's flucked up with the small squad and no RB for so long as he's on record in the last couple of weeks stating as such, so he must surely know not to fluck up again not sorting the right side and a decent striker with some passion. Sorry Gabby is simpy not good enough. He does nothing to inspire. If it's not to his feet then he can't be bothered being creative week in week out, which is the player we need. My opinion!

Anyway rant over...UTV and let's see some balls this coming week from you guys wearing the claret and blue... :D

We played like absolute junk we looked half asleep for the first half, and living in australia that's what i should of done than continue to watch the garbage. First of all Nigel Reo-Coker is not a right winger and playing him out there makes him look like a complete muppet, he doesn't have the skill or pace to do any damage there. Luke Young to me is a bit of a worry he just looks out of place in the first two games he has played i suppose we need to give him time to adjust but Nick Shorey on the otherhand has fitted in well. We need to address the right wing situation pretty much now or we will just plod along and finish around 6th or 7th. Are we asking to much i don't know but the way i look at it we have spent a decent amount of money so an improvement should be expected.

Im a bit worried how he was baited to newcastle as a p/e with milner though. I don't think de la reed would be the answer as itsan extra bod for centre mid which im not sure we need, not for 12m anyway wwhenn we could spenddthat on joaquin who is proven. as for a striker id like to see us give a cheaper foreign alternative a chance. i watch a lot of foreign football in the early hours and iv seen 2 who i think could be worth a punt. my first choice would be a chilean called humberto suazo who banged goals iin for fun in the copa sudaamericano and the other is a young frrnchman called henri saivet. suazo definately has the strength to fit in to the epl and knows wherethe net is and saivet is a huge young talent, there is also a young belgian called eden hazard who plays in the whole who could be huge too i reckon we could get all 3 for under 12m total. Theres also 2 brazilianswho i think may be out of our reach in lulinha and kerlon. im sure you could find a vid of these on youtube somewhere and kerlon is a tricky little player in the mould of maradona and lulinha is like kaka in his style of play.

Doom and gloom guys. This week is huge for the Villa. Not too fussed about Stoke, gutted we lost but as a previous post says, this happens to everyone. It was a very tough game given the context, but what I want to see now is how we get on against Liverpool. And what happens before that.

The Barry situation has been ridiculous, I don't think he'd fancy making a Liverpool debut at Villa Park that's for sure. Imagine...I just hope he signs the new contract and is done with it. Get back to his best and get Capello back on side. I want us to beat Liverpool next week more than I've ever wanted us to beat City. Who really bothers about them about them now anyways?

I reckon beating Liverpool, keeping Barry and seeing the debut of an awesome RM - the boost that would give the lads would be incredible. We wouldn't be able to stop winning until Christmas at least. This is a grudge match, and I hope MON gets them up for it.
And come on Standard Liege...!! Them knocking out 'pool in the CL and us compounding the misery - even though their squad would be stronger for less games, eleven disheartened players on the pitch, I reckon fourth place would be ripe for the taking. UTV!

i can see that we need a right sided midfielder and maybe another striker.
but omg what about the poor defence we have atm :( . cuellar from what i have seen of him will be good when fit, and i personally think laurson should lose his spot to him, Laurson was looking slow and not up to the task, we have no 1 who can bring it out of defence in the side atm, but cuellar will give us that so we keep the ball more, I really think Davis is better than Laurson so far this season, and think Laurson can see that too, and thats why he is playing so badly, cos he knows his certain place is in doubt

Doc, it's all down to being prepared.

A club with status and organisation will not be found out if Santa Cruz signs a new contract because quality options will have been pinpointed - just in case.

The same goes for Milner's position - and Martin, we do need a central midfielder too - with flair.

That's 3 players. And we could also do with a cover at right back, being greedy.

I was pleased with the signings of players bringing - let's face it - numbers to the squad and good, honest, physical Britishness to our play (even though we still cannot defend against long ball farmers coming up from the Championship) such as Luke Young, Shorey and Sidwell.

Because that's what they are folks: there's no magician, no resemblance of Ashley Young in there.

Now bring in ball players, people able to play as well as run - we need ideas and options! UTV

I saw the whole match not the highlights, we were getting dominated by stokey yeah we came back twice(the second was fortunate) but in most games last season we had to the same thing? I just feel i've seen to many games for old problems to be resurfacing.

I feel we will be drawing alot more games this season, we beat m city, lose to stoke, lose to liverpool(rafa we be lookin out for us), draw at spurs(bentley scores), win at baggies and then draw to keano's new boyz

I know its a little early to be going off the rails and saying anger raged drivin comments but i know villa and nothing has really changed Young is the only one with a skill boots on thats was every game we try to get the ball to him (very predictable) as much as He is our ronaldo that why everyone is looking to take him out....

Come on guys you would have thought oneil would have switched it up by now, not leaving it until the near end of the market? sometimes i wish you could change your team abit like getting a new girlfriend, but that never will happen until im in the casket!

I have noticed we do play alot more 1/2 touch football now, i don't no if thats a good thing but i have noticed!

Gutted about the weekends result compounded by the fact it was a scouser giving us the news on skys soccer saturday. But...life goes on and steady progress throughout the season will be just fine with me.
Anyone see De La Reds goal for Real against Valencia yesterday in the Spanish Cup? That lad is true quality...think I will head for a dream like state and think of times that could have been...or still could be!
Keep the faith!

Well i'm sorry for speaking Goldie!!

So are you saying i can't have my say?!

And i am def not an armchair fan, Ive lived and breathed aston villa since i was born. I have a season ticket in the Holte and i go most away games. Loosing to stoke was crushing to me, as i now live in stoke and most my mates are stokey fans.

But Goldie, i was 8 rows behind the goal, and yes i've seen the highlights and the first half was shit. However on our performance in the 2nd hald we didnt deserve to loose!!

So you may well know Osbourne, but that does not make you any bigger fan than i am. So shut it!!

I think you're a bit harsh on Taglor. When we were bought by a billionaire we were sold a lot of PR bull that doesn't look very likely anymore. When the reality kicks in and we buy the likes of Luke Young and Routledge to break into the top 4 it's naturally disappointing and I think his posts reflect that disappointment that many of us feel, even if they are a bit odd.

is mons decision to wait for an answer for milner goona cost us srp as man city are to believed put a 10m offer in for and everton seem very close to, it seems we could be without either and then where else do we look, i hate to critisise but its so damn frustrating, mind you im prob a lot happier now than before we made any signings and yea we leaked goals but was that all down to the defense, as i said before the team wont settle til after window closes and a bit of stability ensues and although im glad it dont close down til next monday as we still need additions i think the transfer window should be from last game of season til first game of following season and let everyone focus on the football on the pitch and not rumours but thats prob just me. utv

Ron...Sorry to hear that you are deaf (only jokin'..it's just the way i read the start of your post)

meangene...would my comment to Ron be deemed racist as well in some way lol ? Is your reference to the characters in South Park who declare Shenanigan's upon each other in a humorous manner and you've been misunderstood in some way?

i note everyone keeps talking about evertons paper thin squad and even david moyes said when interviewed at the weekend he needs 7 yes 7 new players and that is his aim. look at the squads - i just did and ours is smaller than there's. ffs sign some players oneil u pric!!! we have thhe same many playersas last season and that my his own admission was far too small. 6 days to go - we have known this transfer window was coming what a complete joke!!!

A very poor result at the weekend, but could it have been a worse time to play Stoke. Probably not in my opinion. Anyway, the season is long and I'm overly gutted about the result although a point would have been good.

In my opinion, this is a big week for villa's season. We desperately need a right sided midfielder, preferably SWP and a striker, although I would prefer no striker if Kevin Doyle is the only option. He is tat!

Postmodernist Wrote: | 17.28BST | Aug 26, 2008

A really disappointing result this weekend.

I thought Villa's class would tell but Martin O'Neill didn't plan effectively to nullify Stoke's main threat which was always going to be long balls into the six yard box.

One expects captaincy to affect personal performance but Laursen needs to realise that he is now accountable for marshalling the whole team to produce clean sheets. The new defenders need to realise that they must perform from day one if fourth is going to be a possibility. Carlos Ceullar is waiting in the wings but we shouldn't expect too much too soon as he's behind in training and come from a smaller league.

As for transfers - I'd like to see another striker but we can wait to find the correct right winger. Sean Wright Philips would be interesting and I think he'ld terrify most defences - however I doubt his hunger.

I think Ljungberg could be on his way to Villa Park and I'd welcome him. We could do with his guile and now Mellberg has gone he will seriously consider joining Villa.
