The first signing of the January transfer window for Aston Villa is Arsenio Halfhuid

Tuesday, 06 January 09, 07:45 PM · Comments (54)

Now, this isn't confirmed by the club, but they seem more interested in denying rumours at the minute, although I suspect it's more a case of having something to publish on the web, but Sky Sports seem certain it's happened.

The player in question is 17 year old Arsenio Halfhuid and they've even got quotes from his agent. The quotes are basically confirming the deal. I hope for the agents sake it now happens.

"Arsenio's thrilled to be at such a great club, it's all happened so quickly for him, but that's the way football is sometimes," Fletcher told skysports.com.

"He's signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at Villa. A lot of Dutch clubs are wondering how they've missed Arsenio. Credit to Aston Villa for keeping their interest in him quiet and making their move so quickly.

"His cousin played for Chelsea and Southampton, and will be able to offer him lots of valuable advice about playing in England, and Arsenio's very much hoping that he can emulate him"

I know nothing about this player but we do seem to buy the occasional youth player but I can't seem to remember the last one to break into the first team. Can someone remind me?

Anyway, that is all for today. I'm going to bed as I've got a very early start in the morning.

This one does seem pretty certain.
I can't see the agent shouting off for nothing.

I'm just pissing myself at the way the press are putting 2+2 together and coming up with total rubbish, as they don't even have any straws to clutch at when it comes to MON.
My money says there is only one other bloke who knows what MON is up to and that's the bloke who's coughing up the dough :D

We have to sign promising young players if we truly want to be a big club. This is a very intelligent signing. Lets hope he comes good in an area we could definitely use a starlet for cover. Good signing.

It think it is showing how we are trying to be like the Arse in signing top talent from anywhere with a good scouting network. Hope he comes good along with Forrester, the Fonz and all the others.

Pointless signing, he'll go straight into the youth team for a year or so, maybe not even good enough to get into the first team, i want signings that can make an impact NOW!!..not in two years time

Is everybody sure that he CANNOT contribute this season? I mean, he was starting for Excelsior, right? Is that a crap team? Are they in the first division or a lower league? Don't they compete with Standard Leige? I could be all off here, but they've been talking about this guy for weeks.

Come on mate, give it a chance, FFS.

Who do you want and how much are you going to sensibly pay?

As said, we need to be signing these young kids.
Chances are it'll end up a failure as most do, but you never know, this kid could be the next Henri.
Whatever, it's a plus that we're trying, imo.

We'll get a couple of decent players in, no worries.
So if you're going to moan, at least wait until the window has finished. And even then, be thankful for what we've achieved up till now.

Aero - Ruben De La Red deal just never came off... that's not to say it wasn't close. No need to give Damian a hard time over that but obviously given DLR's health issues since, it's good for us that it didn't come off, wishing him a full recovery nevertheless.

vogra - I think most fans want someone for the team now AND good quality for down the road. As long as we do a little business for now and some for downstream, who cares which one has the ink dry first? The guys who will go straight into the team are bound to be harder to close, possibly with dependencies. The praise (albeit from his agent) is a positive sign and it's not going to have cost a great deal.

Buying the best young talent has served Arsenal very well over the years and I'm glad we're going after this sort of player.

Younger players are also happier warming the bench than older ones and are always keen to impress. You never know, he could turn out to be a gem - we've got nothing to lose.

I for One think he will be a great signing, he has shone in the dutch league this season so far, weather or not he gets into the 1st team this season is irrelivant.
looked into him after his name was first banded about by Damo and the like, (i work with a dutchman!!) who had a clue about him already and he found some stuff on the net, a very cultured cb/dm with excellent ability to read the game.
sounds to me like his positioning is good and he can pass!!!

he is 17 he could play at full back. can't be much worse than shorey.
learnt when we signed ashley young not to doubt mons singings again. its time some others learnt after previous comments about petrov, knight, luke young etc saying their crap, mon don't know what hes doing. bla bla bla. now they are doing the biz we are within touching distance of second place chelsea. you just have to accept that mon does know what he is doing and has the proof.

lets see some positive posts for once. Most posts seem to be about crap signings, crap players and crap play even though we keep winning. BE POSISTIVE

Damian asks one good question - who was the last youth team player to successfully break through? Gabby?? but he made his breakthrough with DoL - and MoN was virtually forced to pick him when he signed.

MoN has not brought one player through from the academy....with the exception of 1 or 2 in the carling cup. The young english players that we have and that play - were signed for huge sums of money having made a noame for themselves elsewhere. There have been a few players now who have been signed and never given a chance to prove themselves. MoN does not believe in squad rotation and pretty much never changes his team - and thats probably the secret to his success.

Nobody can question the job MoN has done and the results he has achieved but I dont think he has much focus on bringing young players through, or giving them a chance to establish themselves (Cahill??)

BTW - delighted with this signing as I strongly believe that signing young talent is the way forward and the way to bring (not current but future) great players to the club - like Young - buy potential. Hence, my slight dig at MoN above.

Eoin1981 - I think its easier to bring (and almost rely upon) young players through the academy when you are a bottom half/mid table team and have less funds, see M'boro, Man Citeh (until bonkers money came).

Villa are striving to be among the very best in the league and as such you have less opportunity to blood the youngsters because the margin for error is so slight. If you look at ManUre, Liverpool, Chelsea, they don't bring young players through very often either.

Besides which, MON is giving his second string every chance to prove their worth in the cups and they keep letting him down i.e at the weekend, if Villa had been comfortable and 2 or 3 up, a few young players would have come off the bench. Same as the Zilina match but it didn't go to plan.

For the anoraks amongst you Excelsior have one of the smallest grounds in Holland (3000 capacity) and George Boateng used to play for them.

So Halfhuid signed and I have seen this morning/last night that we are being linked to Canella which I think will be a fantastic buy because this boy looks like he is going to be superstar.

So with Halfhuid signed, Canella maybe on the way and with Davies and Guzan already there that is 4 of the 5 defensive positions sorted for the next 10 years at least

Royston Drenthe of Real Madrid and Holland was also a product of the SBV Excelsior. As were Winston Bogarde and Robin Van Persie. So give the kid a chance and hopefully, in a few years, he'll come good.
Potentially wise INVESTMENT by Martin O' Neill.

rob h.. i can only assume he will go straight to the academy coz villa have confirmed his signing in the 'reserves/academy' section of their website. despite what others are saying i feel its a good signing.. man u js signed 2 serbian chaps one 17 one 19 and everyone is raving on about how its good to see young talent brought in.. i feel the same about our signing. in saying that, i WOULD like to see canella join as well so we have an immediate replacement in the defensive line. it would be good to see MON sign a mixture of young potential and proven ability.

what disappoints me with MON tho, is that he is so desperate to sell harewood yet he hasnt even tried him up front as the hold up man with gabby. he would seem like a reasonable replacement for carew (NOWHERE near carews standard but still give the kid a chance!) he has bled claret and blue this kid, yet we repay him by wanting to sell him at cut price without even trying him as a replacement. very harsh in my opinion.
