The three supposed targets of Martin O'Neill: Santa Cruz, Milner and Naylor

Thursday, 21 August 08, 01:51 AM · Comments (88)

All have been mentioned before so we won't go into detail, but if you believe the rumour pages this morning things look like they are hotting up and these are the three Martin O'Neill is after.

Lee Naylor, currently at Celtic, I'd image would be a straight swap for Maloney. Santa Cruz would offer some much needed competition to Gabby and Carew and Milner, well, we all know about Milner.

All three of these players would strengthen the squad, if only because we have a very small squad and a very long season ahead of us with hopefully a lot of games.

If you think about it, they're actually needed and it's almost funny; I'm allowed to mention small squad, but you won't hear Martin O'Neill bleating on about it again this season, because he did it last season and he's had huge sums of cash and all summer to bring in players.

It feels like I've written this next bit before but there can be no excuses about squad size this season.

Still, these three players would all make a difference in my book, I'm just not convinced any are of the real quality for us to be competing in the top four - mostly because if they were, I rather suspect the top four would have them by now.

Still, good for us to obtain my prediction for this season.

It's Ok saying the three players mentioned would strengthen the team, but do they want to come to Villa or would they want to go somewhere else?

Also, would fans prefer to sign mediocre players just to up the numbers of the squad when we could use our youth players?

If O'Neill did sign 4 average players to up the numbers, then he would receive massive criticism!

Not teh quality to get us competing in the top 4? Santa cruz and Milner are certainly more than good enough to help consolidate where we are and build from there.

Santa cruz is world class in my book - any prem team would be happy to have him based on his form last year and the way he started this season. He'd be tough to get, and if you dont think he is good enough for us then christ knows who you think we should be going for.

criticism, maybe. but while on paper, i don't think they are the type of players to help us compete in top four - maybe with the martin o'neill effect, they'll get us there and maybe, once we are there, martin o'neill will spend money replacing them or adding to the squad to do the most difficult thing and keep us there

these next few days and maybe january, are going to shape our season in my opinion .. shoudl be interesting

alex b

the thing is with santa cruz is that it was his first season and yes, if you knew he was going to do that every year, yes you'd want him, but in 5 seasons in germany he only scored 31 goals - it's replicating it season after season which isn't easy. but like i've said above - if the martin o'neill effect has the impact you'd want it to have, then, sure. but i wouldn't sayhe was 'world class' yet

To be honest I think Milner would be good enough to challenge for the top 4.

As the Doc wrote yesterday it would take huge pressure off Young and that missing right mid last term was the difference between us and them, Milner is also a cracking player in his own right.

Santa Cruz may have been a one season wonder but if he wasn't then we are in for an exciting season. We need two players of there calibre before the Liverpool game as I think we'll beat stoke regardless.

eather milner or swp or cole would be amazing, and eather santa cruz or maybe johnsens from man city, but i believe he's right, all those players, cept maybe joe cole, might help us get to 4th, but not really keep us there.

second note. the end of this transfer, and january i believe will determine the next 2 years possibly.
de le red??? what about him?
anyone know anything? or if he is worth it?

A right winger is a must, I do think we should be giving Routledge a run out as well though.

Santa Cluz would be a great present as he is a finisher, will be a costly one and you will have one striker always having a whinge I feel.

Damien- I suggested it the other day but could not see it posted(my home comp will not show any other comments once I have made one? not sure what that's all about, if anyone knows- help)- Could we introduce a rating system after the game, like the BBC, then everyone gives their marks out of 10 for the individuals?

I live in OZ and they do not show all games and probably manage to show at best 60% , better than 2 years ago when it was just Manure utd every week

sorry but, Santa Cruz is better than anything we have by a long way. we dont have a right sided midfielder so milner is better than what we have already too by a long way. and naylor would be back up for the first team, more than adequate and if he some how surprises everyone and breaks into the first team well then brilliant. i would be absolutly extatic if we signed them they would consolodate our team as the best out of the top 4 and then from there we can go on to build a team that can compete with the top 4 buy signing players that want to come to us not players that only come to us because we are offering them massive wads of cash

O'Neill is a prevaricator. As for Naylor, he had a good first season up here but last season he was pretty woeful. Now on the rare forays up the left wing, when he does get the opportunity to cross the ball, they are usually poor. He also has questionable positional sense when defending. But you never know, he may find his first season form again if he goes to Villa.

I think we are touching on the chicken and egg situation. It would be great to get the Joe Cole's of this world. But it won't happen in this transfer window. The three players mentioned strengthen the squad. This with the MON effect could very optimistically break us into the top four (realistically closer to the top four) this season.

It is a process of evolution not revolution. The higher in the league we get and the further we get in the UEFA cup improves out standing with the "quality" players out there. Better players attract better players. This applies not only at the top level but right down to Park football. This is another reason why GB should stay.

A great season this year should then attract the real quality players that at present reside with the "big" four. The opposite of a "great" season could be that our present quality players may just start to look elsewhere - the GB syndrome.

I have the utmost faith in MON and his team to deliver what we as long waiting fans have been waiting for nearly 30 years. That is for AV not to be called a "big" club but be called again a great and successful club.

Im not a great Milner fan, my first choice would be SWP and then Lennon, players with pace and trickery, Santacruz is the type of player we need, someone who can score and someone with presence but 15 million quid is a lot of money, but if MON is going to pay it then its not my money!! I would really try hard of someone like Gudjohnson, would cost a lot cheaper and do a good job

I agree with everything you say .. apart from maybe Santa Crus is better than anything we've got, only because it was his first season.

I'm not saying he's not a good striker - he clearly knows where the goal is - only that, it was his first season and many a player has had one good season in the Premier League and not repeated it. I'm not saying he won't have another good season, with us or still at Blackburn .. only that, saying he's better than anythign we've got is a bold statement.

I think, given time, Gabby will be awesome, but he needs the time and the occasional rest and time to develop. Last season he looked jaded and in dire need of a rest - bringing in Santa Cruz would not only offer that option but provide more competition - two good things in my book.

But if we brought them in, I don't only think they'd consolidate us as the best out of the top four - I think they could get us there - so I suppose we differ on that also, but in a positive way.

Jamie Cartwright Wrote: | 14.07BST | Aug 21, 2008

I think it's very harsh to judge Santa Cruz on 5 injury ravaged seasons. He was also often pushed to the wing or midfield due to the fact that Bayern seem to always need a German striker up front.

Sorry Damian that's just rot. We already have several 'top four' quality players, Ash, Barry, Friedel, Laursen, maybe others. Even the top four can't buy up every good player in the Prem. Or does a player only become top four quality when they play for a top four club? Rot Sir.

So much has been said about needing a right winger. Just a thought but who was the right winger in the the great 1981/2 side? Ashley Young is an orthodox line hugger - does anyone seriosuly think we would play him AND a Bentley or SWP? Not unless we went to five in midfield.

Northern Villan
Northern Villan Wrote: | 14.12BST | Aug 21, 2008

Damian, you say that none of these players are real quality because they are not playing for any of the top 4. But Santa cruz has been linked with Arsenal, Chelsea and Utd but his price tag has perhaps scared them off. But still he is a wanted man and would get in any team in the Prem. Also when we bought ashley young, did you belive he had the ability to become the player he has? I have no doubt that he would be a leading star for any team in the prem. I believe under MON especially milner and Santa cruz would flurish and we would definatley have a team challenging for honours on all fronts.

Keep the faith, MON will prevail. UP THE VILLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When Young signed I called it 'good business'.

Also, the first time Young is mentioned on this site I comment that I'd love him at VP.

I also mention in my comment above 'the Martin O'Neill effect'. He gets the best out of players, we all know this and I'm actually saying that these players WILL strengthen the team and I think may even get us in the top four. It's kicking on from there that is where MORE players will be needed and of higher quality and I'm suggesting that maybe these players (Naylor aside as he'd be purchased as backup) would maybe, maybe, not be considered starters for a team consistently in the top four.

I could be wrong - it's all opinion but maybe I've not been clear enough with my post today. Challenging for and competing in are two different things in my book. So sorry ...

damian we agree at last, wow

santa cruz is not a good investment 15 m , for a guy who scored 37 goals in 188 matches in germany is shocking. He also had 2 seasons of doing not alot through injury. He is a huge risk. However i'm not aware of any striker that would be available. But after seeing ashton last weekend, i would be very very happy with him up front. Can't see it happenin. Maloney straight swap for naylor, nope think they could chuck us a few million aswell

Would be elated with Santa Cruz. Would rather SWP than Milner, but either will fill a gaping hole at right wing amply.

As for Lee Naylor, I would be very bothered if it were a straight swap. Surely Maloney is worth a good 4-5 million? I've seen a few 1m valuations which worry me a little. He is a valuable player to have in the squad and I would loathe for us to sell him on the cheap.

Milner is also young and really could be a great player for us .. but after putting my faith in so many players over the last 25 years of supporting the villa and feeling let down more often than not .. it's just not easy for me to do it anymore ..

Do we need another left back? we already have Bouma and Shorey with O'halloran as back up...this has to be enough. I'd rather see back up for Luke young please!!!!!!!! or maybe even luke young to be relegated to back up the signing of a real world class defender at RB. Milner and Santa Cruz could both be class.

I know that this sounds ridiculous, but, I already think that we stand an even money chance of entering the top 4 this season.

one player i would love to see at vp is the colombian striker falcao.i have seen alot of him,and let me tell you this guy scores goals.i think he would offer us a complete alternative to the strikers we have (carew all strength and bullishness, aswell as a bit of craft, gabby, lightning speed and directness, harewood, power, heart, albeit not much finesse).with falcao you get bags of skill, the ability to create goals himself out of nothing, and a predatory instinct.with him included in our ranks we would have the unique ability to surprise teams and keep them guessing, which i think is an essential part of a succesfull team.i would imagine him to be available for slightly less than santa cruz and could see him benefitting the team more.i know buying south americans directly from south america can sometimes be a risk as the change in footballing culture is quite different but i reckon it a risk worth taking as i would say that getting this guy is achievable (quick phone call to fellow colombian and villa fave juan pablo me thinks) come on MON cheque book out this guy will be a hit and theres nothing like a bit of south american flair to put arses on seats and raise the roof

judging by last seasons performances santa cruz looks like a natural goalscorer, always seems to be in the right place at the right time and overall an intelligent player. we definitely need him or another striker of his quality if we want to push on this season, as there is no way carew can stay fit for a whole season which will now hopefully include a good uefa cup run as well. gabby also looked burnt out towards the end of last season and with only harewood to cover who is nothing more than an impact player off the bench santa cruz would be a very welcome addition.

Also hope milner signs too would be another good signing!

Agree with you Damian although I am sceptical about the bit "if they were good enough I rather suspect they would have them by now"- This is fair enough I suppose, but are you thinking that in order to compete we need to at least challenge the top four in their attempt to sign their target players?

In which case I think we'd just end up in a viscious circle and with a squad to a similar size to last year's. I think the 'O'Neill factor' is a major part of what will hopefully be our success but I think also there is anoter facet to it; the only word I can think of is tesselation - where a selcted group of players are at their optimum with only another group of players... Whereas the top four would buy just sheer quality at absolute top prices (wenger excepted) and due to that, you kinda hope there will be some good footy at the end of it - O'Neill is looking for 'the perfect fit' of the next tier of players which I think on its day, can challenge the top four.

Does that make any sense?

MON's policy seems to be only buy players who are proven in English football (or Scottish in a few cases) Santa Cruz has proven he can score goals last season but unfortunately it means the price has gone sky high. I can't think of many other strikers in england who are as good as RSC and realistic buys. I wish our scouting network came up with some foreign gems as it might save us a few quid but if Randy is o.k paying top whack then who am i to question.

The thing that is worrying is Lee Naylor! Not because he might be crap or good it's because He'll be our 4th LB when we already have Barry as a back up LB if need be. It's beginning to look like MON's kept him till he's got all the positions he plays covered. And about this Falco lad, Can't anyone remember our last signing from River plate ? I agree with villa_tommy.

I don't think we need Naylor. When Bouma and O'Halloran come back we'll have 3 left backs and Barry can play there too if necessary in the meantime. And, I'd want a minimum of £5m/£6m for Maloney, assuming his contract still has a few years to run.

Cover for Luke Young is more important.

As for Santa Cruz - it is a risk to spend that much on him. We've seen it ourselves with Angel and Reading have seen it with Doyle - one good season does not mean he's worth £15m . However, I trust MON's judgement and there's no doubt he would be an excellent signing if he can repeat last season's form on a regular basis.

Any right winger would be good right now!

I don't agree that 'top four' quality players would already have been bought by top four clubs though. Players like Young and Berbatov could easily play for a top four club, so there are plenty of quality players out there for us to get our grubby hands on!

He hasn't just had the whole of the summer to pick up his targets, he's had the whole of last season, pre-contract agreements do exist. I love MON, i love Randy, i love Villa, always have always will, but we are the victims of our own lack of success in recent years. Whilst being excited about the recent signings, and i feel sidwell will be a masterclass for us, i cant help but want more...because we deserve it..we are the pride of the Midlands, and there should be no problem in attracting the players we want. I for one am glad that Bentley didnt sign for us, Carew hit the nail on the head this week when he said we don't need any big egos, we need big hearts, and at the moment that's what MON is forming, maybe Capello should consider that when picking his team, he needs performers, not ego's and celebs..anyway, back to Villa. I totally agree with you Damo, it could be a gamble with Santa Cruz, but i think he's the calibre of player we should naturally be after. I dont think he fits the bill though, we have 3 powerful, fast, determined forwards, i think what we need is a poacher, someone who picks up the pieces in the 6 yard box, who can pick up carews knock downs, or agbonlahors rebounds, i wish i knew who, but i dont, so any suggestions anyone? After watching the game on sunday, i couldnt help but notice we are in desperate need of a wide player, Milner for me would cut it, i think him and routledge as back up (i was screaming for him at 4-1) would suit us nicely, which would also bring the best out of Luke Young at RB who has great potential as an attacking full back. I dont think the third is Naylor, because if it happens..thats a swap..not a new signing, he's aiming to boost signings, not replace losses. Realisticaly, i'd like Milner, Mr Poacher (whoever that maybe), and that creative spark we seem to be lacking to link up with the forwards. Why not pinch martin petrov from city? Maybe i'll get slated for saying this, but Heskey would do a great job for us. On top of that 3, i would like to see MON utilise the 2 (i think)loan signings available to us, with some audacious bids from abroad, on the fringes of giant clubs, guranteed UEFA cup football. Saviola springs to mind..if the geordies can get him, we should be nailed on to get him!

UTV...Darren

Just watched the Olympic Semi final between Argentina v Brazil...Ronaldino and other so called top names were in the squad and they still lost 3-0...A couple of top names do not necessarily produce a top team!

I don't think it was luck that Santa Cruz scored so many last season and I think he'll more than replicate it this season. My only concern is with the money that he'd cost he would likely walk straight into the first team. I'd personally like to see Gabby continue to sparkle (a bit of a gamble) and wouldn't like to see the Gabby Carew partnership broken. Either way, if we actually do add Milner and Santa Cruz to the side, we will really be up the top fours arse this season.

Remember guys... MON is the boss... hes the boss cause he knows what we're doing. We cant judge his signings yet until he makes them... hes done wonders at this club and every club hes been at so whoever he signs hes doing it for the best of the club. What villa fan would argue if we signed Milner & Santa cruz?? United wanted santa cruz and liverpool wanted milner. If you think we should be aiming higher... it takes time... and you have to be patient!! Up the villa!!!

Wouldnt suprise me if MON goes in for Saviola. Tried to get him at Celtic and tried to get him on loan for villa when MON first arrived.

Rogale. – Spot on.

Top Quality players exist outside the Top 4, but for one reason or another the talent isn’t realised. That’s the art of great management – the ability to recognise the unseen potential, acquire it, and then instil the confidence in the player to reveal it. Who am I talking about?

Wont believe any news that any of these 3 are coming unless i see them in villa jersey.
why cant we just sign someone absolutely world class.
30 million plus.
i know its a long shot but please after all this summer speculation(acording to website 100 plus players linked)some one like henry, gattuso, david villa, just for once.
come on i know we can sign a superstar.

TT77: Tesselation. Brilliant.

That's exactly what MON is about.

Up front, I wouldn't mind Villa adding a van Nistlerooy, or the sort of player who can turn, find space, and have the deadly finish. Failing that, Gabby and Carew are a good pairing. If MON wants RSC, I'm all for it.

The really important signing now, as everyone knows and Doc posted (and assuming Barry is staying), is a quality RW.

Damian...I think I recall you suggesting the DLR pursuit hinged on whether Barry was off.

iots not always about having world class players or the next so called ronaldo in your team its about having a team that gels really well and runs like a well oiled engine, we could go out and buy your superstars of football but whats saying that they will fit into martin o neils vision of play and plans!Milner fits the bill as we already know naylor would be a good backup and santa cruz and big john upfront would terrorise any defence!cmon mon sign em up!

roque santa cruz would be an absolutely immense singing...BUT...

...i simply CANNOT see how milner and naylor would improve our squad?!!?!

for one we only need to loan a left back for cover at left back due to boumas injury...

and ask yourself this...."is milner champions league quality?"
i find myself HATING milner...did NOBODY see what he said about the villa after the transfer fell through last year?!?!?!

plus why the HELL should we buy an average winger (who shows glimses of quality) for MORE than ashley young, when hes not going to be HALF as effective?!?!

seriously...right now realistically id be buying aaron lennon

just take a second to imagine the absolute raw pace going forward with young, lennon and agbonlahor, coming at teams from all angles. it would be unstoppable.

people right off lennon because he "hasnt got the finishing touch" or "he hasnt played alot"

just let MON do his magic, he run is a CARBON COPY of ashley young, and im telling you now he would be just as successful

JonLaw Wrote: | 02.34BST | Aug 22, 2008

The three players mentioned WILL boost the squad. RSC is very very good and importantly a realistic target, Milner would fit right in and is definitely in the mould of a MON signing, hardworker, young english and with National team ambitions. Naylor a handy back up at LB.

Besides these three, aren't we going to be signing de la Red???

Have you had any updates on DLR, it's all gone v quiet? Do reckon he would only come as a straight Barry replacement?
Where did that lead come from anyway, it was all so "exclusively revealed"?
Santa Cruz and Milner would be ideal, not sure about SWP & Lennon, they don't cut it for me.

Not seen anything of Bhurji since he had 'egg on his face'. Must admit I think it's a realistic option that DLR will sign, but not because of your posting. I really hope it happens for you, or your gunna have to sack the contact that gave you the info Damo and do a Barryesque type apology!! ;) ;)

Santa Cruz, signs a new Blackburn deal! pity!
so whos this top quality striker we are gonna sign now, cus i dont think that doyle would be the one! (but thats just me)
yep bring in any right hand midfielder, we need one! SWP, Lennon, Milner, JOE COLE (IN MY DREAMS)......would be gd! and would certainly give Villa that lethalness to finish the opposition off for sure!
