Nobody at Aston Villa Football Club is above criticism, even the manager. However, I'm not about to start in on Martin O'Neill for his latest comments, but request that the record is changed.
I wish he'd stop coming out with these excuses for his lack of transfer activity, or at the very least somebody somewhere at the club, would stop all these comments coming out on the club site.
It's probably not his fault and the club are probably just rehashing something he said a few days ago that never made it on to the site or on the video news, but come on, with only a few days to go give us something positive to read or nothing at all.
If you've no idea what I'm talking about I'm referring to the comments published today on the official club site that have Martin O'Neill referring to the complexities in transfer market.
Transfer dealings have changed incredibly over the past few years. Bill Shankly would be absolutely bemused to see how things are done now in the modern game. I can imagine having a conversation with Jock Stein and him asking me: 'what's going on here?' There are things that come up now in transfer dealings that never appeared on the horizon years ago.Sometimes you yearn for those days again but we're in a modern day business and we have to get on with it. We've still got some days left before transfer window closes and I intend to get the players in that I want. They are players that will help the club in the long term.
Martin O'Neill, August 24th 2007
The thing is, I'm starting to read more and more excuses and I don't like excuses. I like reasons and these reasons are not good enough because no other Premier League manager seems to have had problems getting players in.
Sven joined Manchester City and brought in players left right and centre. While I know it's worked in the short term and Martin O'Neill is always talking about the long term, we're about to kick off our third match in desperate need of some players.
While I love what the way he talks about the club 'in the long term' and believe he is the right man for the job, 'in the long term', there are also short term issues to factor in.
Petrov and Maloney are prime examples; they are clearly here for the long term, because that's what the manager is doing, but they're not working in the short term.
There is a balance that has to be achieved because this excuse about planning for the long term can always be just that; an excuse. Sven has worked on the short term, as do other managers, and he's probably thinking of the long term also. Our manager needs to do both, because it's not always about three seasons time.
We'll get the result tomorrow and many will, for a few days anyway, be very happy, but us supporters can be quite demanding and while we understand the long term goals of the football club, we don't want to be hearing excuses in the short term.
What do you think about these comments made by Martin O'Neill? Let me know below.

We want action not words!! where are the signings??
As I said in my previous article, I think O'Neill has lost touch a bit with Premiership football since he managed Leicester.
Hopefully (it sounds like it) he's learned the errors of his ways and can get players in. I don't want to hear excuses, I want to hear that this player or that player has signed for Aston Villa.
I intend to get the players in that I want
Says it all to me.
I'm looking forward to us getting Davies and Bosingwa ;)
This has been one of the most dissapointing pre-seasons for a while , at least under o dreary we knew we wasnt going to sign anybody half decent so you can prepare for another boring season, this year however we were promised big things and ive spent all summer eagerly awaiting villa's big signings to propell us to european glory which have not materialised. i know we have a week left but surely if we were going for top players there going to be more expensive now rather than close season all we keep hearing is were trying to bring players in we dont want to pay over the odds , unfortunatly to compete at the top u have to if we dont get anyone in im sure everyone will feel very let down but hey were used to it by now.
I just cant believe its been 3.5 months (over a quarter of a year) and we're still watching and waiting for movement. Its bizarre and confusing, as whatever happens next week - it should have been sorted out weeks ago.
I dont care what anyone says about MON and the 'he knows what he's doing' and 'he always leaves it late' arguments, it is as Damian said unprepared and is making us look a laughing stock.
MON should stop moaning. If he doesnt like the way football is NOW, then he should put up or shut up. His honeymoon period is well and truly over, time to deliver
Mumraa mate, we fans have been taken for a ride again......wake up Lerner before its too late!!
The club are spending too much time reading the negative comments coming from internet forums, which is leading to knee-jerk communications. I've stopped reading Vital Villa because of the negative rubbish being published on there.
I agree with totally with you, if it's just another excuse, don't bother.
Im fed up of reading that he doesnt want to pay over the odds for players, if these are the players he wants for the 'long-term' what does an extra few million matter if its gonna be for the club and pay off in the future, surely that extra few million will be written off when we qualify for europe. Im sorry Martin, i have ultimate faith in your abilities but we've heard all the excuses before under o'dreary and its now time for you and the board to put your money where your mouth is and repay the faith us villa fans have put in you throughout the pre-season.
Guys dont expect any action on the transfer front before the 31st of August, Otherwise known as O'Neil Day. Thats when all the big signings will or wont happen, and i wouldn't even bother checking for them before 4pm
Hang in there
Hi guys...i haven't posted anything for a while as i haven't had anything positive to say !
I'm still very disappointed and clinging on to the hope that MON will come up with the goods in the remaining days of the window.
However, I thought the quotes from MON were interesting. I took it that he was referring to the use of agents in the modern game maybe, coupled with players high demands for the superstar lifestyle and he is obviously not happy about this.
Maybe an agent or two has stirred up the pot behind the scenes to prevent certain transfers from happening or maybe a couple of players have knocked us back for reasons other than footballing ones.
He then went on to say that he intends to get in the players that he wants and these players will help the club in the long term. Again, i read this a little differently and it sounds to me that he has given up penny pinching and now seems prepared to splash the cash ! Maybe he's trying to justify the fact that he's going to have to spend big now(on a level that he hasn't before) and he could be pre-warning us of this for fear of doing a DOL !
The fact that these players will help the club in the long term says to me that they will be young enough and with sufficient quality to still be around in five years time. They could also still be his original targets considering he hasn't let anything out so far.
Hope this is the case !
UP THE VILLA ;)
Im being deadly serious when i say that we will sign Defoe,Rosenior and Davies next week and if not rosenior in, bosingwa will be . we mean business but just want to make sure that we get players in for a right fee and that they are here to win things for the club. in MON we DO Trust! full stop!!stop whinging n be a little bit more patient!
I intend to get the players in that I want

WELL F***ING WELL DO DO IT THEN! Its driving us all insane. At midnight on 31st, whatever happens im opening a bottle of high strength alcohol and drinking myself into a stupour - thanful that the last AVFC sage will be OVER :'(
Best get oursleves ready for the next installment in Jan!
i totally agree with you mike_roberts
I think the marketing team at the Villa shot themselves in the foot big time.
After the Sheff Utd game, I don't think I have been so happy or proud to be a Villa fan. Everytheing in the world seemed great, new manger, wealthy owner and a huge transfer kitty to propel us into europe.
What they did wrong was to come out and make transfer promises. As those in football know, transfers have many variables, and quite often never complete.
Other than the transfers they have done everything right, but in football they should never promise the world. Optimism is high at our club already, they just added bloody fuel to the fire!
I would like to wait til the Chelsea game, see what kind of squad we have, then make judgement on the whole saga. I believe most people's rants about no transfers and other negativity is just stemming from frustration and concern for the future of our beloved club.
The club only have themselves to blame, but they still have time to put things right. I tell you what, 3 cracking signings next week and it will be conga's round the Holte end against Chelsea. I really hope this happens, if not, well what can we do? Boo the team? what will that do? it aint the players already here's fault. It means we need to make even more noise to help them. C'mon the villa faithful, lets try to be patient, lifes to short to stress!
Soap box moment over
UTV
In Martin, Randy and the General we trust.
Keep the Faith..... AVFC for ever
We all need to stop moaning about transfers, yes we are in a bad state but what does moaning do about it? No one from the club will read all this so whats the point... I feel shattered from the amount of internet clicking I've done over the past few months trying to find an ounce of transfer activity but until we see someone in the shirt on the official site it's a waste of time!
If by 1st Sept we dont have the players in then God help MON, but until then lets all just back off a wee bit!
Dont get me wrong I'm as frustrated as the next Villa fan but I'm turning into a right moody c**t coz of something I have no control over so it's time to sit back and wait for some OFFICIAL news! How many times have we seen on here and other news feeds that the players will be in in the next few days? Exactly... too f*****g many! And thats what we all get pissed off about, people feeding from scraps of info and making bullshit stories up which wind us all up!
Woodinhio - i agree we should try and ease back.
Though as your post went on it seemed that you were getting yourself wound up again lol.
We all need to be sedated for a few days so we can get our sanity back in check
I think it's MON's way of saying that he's doing his best to get the best deals he can, and is coming up against new age contracts with different add ons and various other things. I also think it's his way of saying, he's going to hold out for as long as possible, before just blowing the money that Randy has promised on his targets. If that means Bosingwa, Davies and Defoe then all of this torture will be forgiven. If the deadline comes and goes without another decent signing, I will be bitterly dissappointed.
How appropriate MON should mention Shankly and Stein when he seems to belong to their generation, taken by surprise as he seems by today's cut throat market as if he'd been away from football for decades and not a season or two. Football hasn`t changed that much from his days at Celtic, Man Utd were paying a fortune for Veron, Franny Jeffers was changing jersey for stupid prices and Chelski already existed back then too. Poor, cut-price excuses that really don't improve the increasing frustration of many out there..7 days to go, wakey wakey Martin.
True alex, I need a break from it!!!! :D
Painful isnt the word - this summer has been agony, I have never before wasted so much of my life reading empty rumours and source-less links with players. I gave up two weeks ago, and honestly feel better about it. If it happens it happens, if not we will still be better off without those who have left. I am sure MON wants the best he can get and is trying. We have been warned before by the celtic fans what to expect. I will wait for "O'Neil day next friday"
it's true we're all turning into serial moaners, but lets face it we have enough to make us. we've just escaped one shit ragime of with ellis, only to fall into another with o'niel (or it seems that way at present). it also makes you feel better when you've vented your spleen, don't you think.
jusy one other thing to chew on.............what if there isn't the money there!!!!! just a thought.
Fucking hell, really getting abit pissed off now. Sick of hearing about long term plans and not wanting to pay over the odds for people. Long term plans mean fuck all if we dont sign any decent players and end up finishing out of europe. If you want someone MON and you think they can get us into europe then sign them. Fact is if you do nothing now we will end up in 11th or 12th again and will be in the same position next summer as we are now, unable to attract quality players. Not sure about Davies and Defoe myself but if you want them MON then sign them and we'll judge you in 6 months! Please just do something otherwise we'll all end up praying for the january window like last year, which will also be a let down.
Please, please do something MON, at the moment we're full of potential and ready to push on with a few quality signings. In a year we'll still be second rate jokers if nothing is done.
Sorry fellas, buts thats what we are as i type!!!
I know it is still early, but I really dislike the way villa have started the season. They have looked average compared to the start of last season. Carew hasn't done enough for me and I hate to say it, but we might have to try harewood up front. I know he missed some sitters in pre-season, but he always seems to create chances on goal, or be in the build up of chances. And Maloney needs to get a game.
Saying that, we have only played two of the better teams in the league this season. If we dont get all 3 against Fulham I'll be terrified of what is to come this season.
I dont even care who we bring in. Whether it's Davies or the German lad, we need some fresh blood. I was watching a bit of the spurs match the other day and saw Defoe on the bench. I thought to myself, that's not right. Lets bid 12 mil for Defoe and land a proven goal scorer.
Theres a new site for all of you so called fans to enjoy...
www.ficklefans.co.uk
or at least i wish there were, so you could all fuck off.
I cant understand some peoples stance on all things Villa. For fucks sake, moan after the transfer window shuts and we havent signed any players. Not before.
ive come up with a theory. I genuinly believe that this site is a cheaper alternative to psycotherapy. A place for whingers to verbally expell all of the badness inside of them.
overall, im sick to death of all the moaning and whinging on this site that im going to boycott it.
I will be telling all of my friends who are villa fans to do the same.
Linden1983 boycott the site then and stop bothering us with your boring chat. Fact is im probable the most positive villa fan there is but shit all has been done. We've still got a decent team and reckon we'll do alright, however other teams have progressed alot during the summer. We're looking at 12th with the current squad, not pessimistic, fickle, moaning or whinging but FACT.
even if we get some more signing how long as it took mon, this man is a disgrace, what sort of top flight manager leaves it till the last min 2 sign them, ANSWEWR NOBODY
only this sort of shit can happen at da villa
its a bit like when we are winning 1-0 and theres 10 mins left u no its gonna end 1-1 I HAVE LOST DA FAITH
IM NOT GOIN 2MOZ OUT OF PROTEST LETS ALL DO DA SAME
well put linden1983...ummmmmm fact from villa4europe,we will finish 12th,you need to get down the bookies mate ,can you tell me where the other prem teams will finish ?,i might have a bet ;)
ha ha ha ...its about time more of the villa boys started getting wound up by the plankster and his lack of transfer activity...im so glad..i can now sit back and read all the comments,on how the plankster is beggining to drive people nuts...
dont want to say i told you so..but the hole is getting bigger mon..times running out..i wonder if mon is gonna get tony blairs old spin doctor alistar darling to come up with some right corking excuses..
i wonder if...tone and the other guys whos seen this coming are laughing with me now...
keep up the crap work oneil you plank....
ps all you idiots who still believe in the plankster..keep it stum..do not come up with any crap about me and the others being doom mongers etc...keep it till next week..then if the plank signs loads of players you can have ya say..and we will be eating humble pie..me thinks not....lol lol lol.
I haven't heard Ferguson,Benitez,Wenger,Erikkson,Jol,Keane,Moyes,Allardyce etc whine on about how it USED to be in the Shankley days! They just get on with the job in hand! Meanwhile the wall of silence that us fans are being deafened with carries on growing! I agree that if the club has nothing to say, i'd rather they didn't re-hash the same statement over and over again. To make matters worse the likes of Benitez and Ferguson are holding numerous press conferences every week letting their fans know exactly what is going on at their club. This is how we should be treated! I for one have never felt so let down by a pre-season. In the past we never expected much and that was fine, but this season was meant to be massive for us. We should be breaking our own transfer records getting quality players in and that just hasn't happened!Based on our start and the end of last season we should be challenging for a spot in the top 8 MINIMUM but with our small squad, talented though they are, we are going to struggle once suspensions and injuries kick in! Whatever way you look at it , its BAD MANAGEMENT to let so many players go without having adequate back up! Whats worse is to fool us into believing that we have transfers waiting in the pipeline when we clearly haven't. MON needs to get a grip and realise that its not 1965 anymore and buy some fucking players before he drives us all mad!
.... Pardon my French! :o
To be honest i think that MON is trying to bring in the best quality he can, but one factor is stopping this from happening, that is that we aren't in europe! i get the feeling that he is maybe looking a step too far at the mo, we need players who will gain us the european spot, then you can bring in real world class players. but either way i can't understand why we have only brought in three players through out the summer! it's been a bad start to the season so far off the pitch!!!
Personally, I think its the guys who publish the stories on the website who are to blame for the apparent stream of excuses we're getting. They don't really have anything to report, so they're really reaching to get a 'story'.
The message hasn't really changed over the last few months and I've noticed that they sometimes just re-publish old articles, verbatim (take the current Gareth Barry interview as an example, or ANY of the newspaper reviews). Occasionally, they only have a single paragraph that's new, so they pad the article out with a few old quotes, making it appear that MON is repeating himself, week after week, in a whining fashion.
This particular article may be brand new, but following on from all the re-hashed rubbish they've been spoon-feeding us, it pulls at a few nerves.
MON is probably bursting a vein trying to get the players he wants in at a decent price, and this may be his way of venting his frustration, but please let's not take this as an 'excuse for not making signings' until 1st September, when the reality of the final situation will speak for itself.
I think some of you guys will be s**ting humble pie for weeks!
at gormz
Well said son, won't have a word said against until its impossible for us to sign anyone. Too many twitchy arses around here for my liking, its understandable, but check out MON's history. We should know what to expect.
Give him till the death.
ps
I hope he rams these signings up everyones arse.
They are comin.
Most of the people that claim they have lost faith in MON didn't really have any to start with, because if they really had faith, they would have given him until 1/9/07 before attacking his character! I believe that the main reason MON has said some of the things he has recently is because of pressure to appease impatient and fickle fans. Ya either got faith or ya aint!
he said he wanted palyers in for pre season - he failed to deliver that. Even if he gets players in next week it was poor management not to get the players in for the start of the season or at least have not let players go until those players are in. He has been v lucky in that we have had no injuries over the internationals cause he would have been made to look a fool if we had had 3 or 4.
if he gets the players in this week great if he doesnt i think we all know we are in trouble.
By his own admission his tactics in the transfer market have been wrong so ok have faith but please stop portaying MON out to be this messiah that cant do a thing wrong cause he has over the last few months.
He said it would be ideal to have players for pre season. Also Delaney and Sutton retired, Angel Samuel Mccann Davis Ridgewell Hughes all WANTED to leave(realised they would not get first team to weak to fight.)Djemba-Djemba is naf and Hendrie is past it, so some of you should change the record about letting players go they are crap anyway you make out like they were world beaters. Also how many players do chalsea(who will go far in 4 comps) have in their squad?
the messiah that cant do anything wrong....or should it be right...i will give him carew...
but if hes waiting for the deadline to come, like some celts say..so the clubs get desperate and accept villas bid..what happens if other clubs come in at the last min too..and what if there in europe,,im sure spurs everton blackburn mite fancy some of these world class players..
mons history umm theres a thought..mite be easier to do it his way,,when hes in charge of one of only two clubs in scotland and there in europe...
granted being linked to players by the media dont help...but even thats stopped now...
let the dreamers ,dream on i hope they come true..
and we wont blame mon if this season turns into a nightmare, cause hes just fantastic and its him not the villa we support
why dont he sign some of the quality back ups just in case
gormz and gazza,,ever thought of a career on the stage....lol
why is mon always talking value for money...what has changed since jan 07....he didnt worry then did he...petrov...he paid 4 million too much for that guy...and ashley young well im keeping every thing crossed for him....
dear lawrie sanchez,,please do a swap with us..you have petrov we will have davis back...honest petrov is really good, ask his best mate who keeps picking him each week...youll know the guy,hes in the next dugout wearing a big pointy hat with a large D and number 31 on it....
I read MON's comments and I saw it that he's been pissed about with maybe his original targets and he still seems unruffled and confident he will get his men.
I think/hope he's trying to warn us that he's going to have to spend bigger than either AVFC or himself have ever spent before.
He added that the players he wants will help Villa in the long term. Is he confident of landing half a dozen young, fit, hungry players better than we already have ?
I foooookin hope so !
UP THE VILLA ;)

easy mate...have patience (you've heard it before i know)

I prescribe at least six spliffs a day for you seeing as you're so stressed.
Follow that with at least 8 cans a night until August 31st.
Nice one fella, take it easy ;)
randy or his general should come forward to let us know whats going on,are they going to back mon with cash for new signings or are they worried after he paid £8mil for petrov and £9.5mil for young? i like most of you are getting a bit p....d off checking sky, teletext, websites etc every single day waiting for news on these MAJOR SIGNINGS we have been promised, why did mon leave it so late to sign harewood ? this will be the same in a weeks time last minute panic buys .Something is not quite right we need to be kept informed on whats going on behind the scenes so speak up mr lerner let us villa fans know whats happening.
I would never in a million years suggest that MON is anything like the Messiah, just think fans should have a bit more patience and a little more grace, afterall MON is only human!
WTF is complicated about the transfer market ?? you pay the club what they want and you get the player, don't get any easier than that.
at sommersetvilla
a few cans and a wank might be in order, before you get sectioned. There is fuck all your ranting is going to achieve, would you buy a car if they kept changing the price ? You don't know whats going on behind the scenes, so unless your MON's wife, give him the benefit. Like I said in an earlier post, In an ideal world, I would have a 10 inch prick, but its not.
at sommersetvilla
no never thought of a stage carreer, suppose i could come and juggle some balls in the circus with you thou coco.
Martin messed up this transfer market and you all deep down no that he did its funny how he said last month that he wants a bigger squad than last season now his saying he will be happy with one more one minute its this then its that he changes his mind once a week none of his storys add up the man has gone crackers in his old age
dont get me wrong his a great manager but what he ever won?My nan could win cups for celtic the leauges that easy
And won one cup with leicster WOW flippin weeee win one come and get rated as one of the best managers in the world if i win A cup dose that make me one of the best NO So why dose it him
Warrickvilla, bet on us not getting into europe. Unless we sign a few players in the coming weeks we havnt a chance! I'll give you that tip cos i think you need it. An linden, fuckin hell thats what the sites for to vent your feelings and everyones clearly not happy.
I HATE BLUES sums it up perfectly, the signings shud be done and dusted by now! Three points tday thou so the dream is still alive!
