They think it's all over: Surely more signings to come?

Friday, 31 August 07, 08:17 AM · Comments (110)

The Curtis Davies deal is done and dusted, Zat Knight is in and ready to play. With those two central defenders we've also signed Nigel Reo-Coker, Marlon Harewood and Scott Carson, but is that it?

With all of those signings there were rumours to begin with that the deals were done. Even the Shaun Maloney deal in January, although done very late, was widely talked about the day before.

The thing is, there isn't much talk about anything else at the moment apart from maybe Thomas Sorensen leaving.

Luke Moore and Olof Mellberg are yet to commit to the club despite us all thinking they would have had contracts sorted out by last week and there are no whispers of a right back or anything coming out form the local papers, who would usually be the first to know.

Could this really be it? I hope not and I still think we'll get another few players in, mostly because of the 'top class signings' and 'bigger squad' statements, but maybe I've fallen for blarney?

I hope more come as they are needed, but am I putting too much faith in the club and should I expect them to meet my expectations? Nine hours to go.

Well MON has said on SSN that "there is a possibility of 1 more person coming in, but we'll have to see". That doesn't look hugely promising, but there's apparently an agent who reckons that 4 of his players are going to be moving between premiership clubs by the end of the day. Who knows, one of them may be on their way to the mighty VP. Here's wishing.

I am hoping a RB is at Bodymoor now and they are top class, along with a R Mid and a 'Real' quality C Mid between 9pm and 00.00

I think it's all blarney. Fitzgerald should be told to keep his mouth shut in future cos if he regards Zat Knight and Marlon "top-class signings" then he should prob get a job outside of football. He clearly knows FA about it.

We need more than two centrebacks in, we need a right back although i think Gardner will continue there) a creative midfielder and a striker. Lets just break the bank for Defoe-£12m should get him.

Had the club not made many believe this was gonna be a great summer of spending and top players, I`d be quietly and happily settling with what we have. But the club DID make big statements - and up to now we don`t even have a proper right back. So I'm sorry my moaning's interfering with your rosey view of life Alfred - I just expected much better - as conveniently told by the club when the season tickets went on sale.

As my username says,I feel extraordinarily let down.

A billionaire takes over the club, money is promised for top players and we end up with a journeyman defender who gets arrested,a never has been and never will be striker,a goalkeeper on loan who, given the choice at the end of the season, will want to go back to Liverpool. In all fairness davies will probably be ok.

With the signings we've made we've gone backwards, look at the quality players other teams are signing, even Man City for God's sake!

Add in the Petrov factor (don't get me started on him,he's had over a season,he's not going to improve) and it's just another season of mid table obscurity again.

I was that confident 5 weeks ago I even splashed a tenner each way on Villa being in the top two.

Do you think MoN will give me my money back?

At first, i was disappointed with the players coming in. However we have some of the top young British talent on display. Something no other club can boast. Carson, Gardner, Young, Reo-Coker,Davies, Agbonlahor,Moore, and with Osbourne and Cahill coming through. Anyone who cant see MON's five year plan in that is blind. I think Gardner has done a good job so far as RB. We need a couple more faces, but on the whole we should be very excited. I dont want some unhappy Adriano coming to villa and upseting the camp. We are on the verge of what Ferguson created all those years ago and what Leeds tried to do but lost all their talent. Patience people.....we should be very excited and not grizzling because we cant get spurs or chelsea rejects.

I am hoping that we get at least another one in before midnight (really could do with a quality AM - look at the squad list on avfc.co.uk; 6 midfielders!), but I somehow don't think it will happen...

We do have some real class in the ranks, but to sustain a season-long campaign? Mid table here we come!

I'm more worried about the people having a go at the board. MON knows what he wants, he's got a hell of a solid and tight knit squad now, and i'd sooner that than a bunch of high profile misfits more concerned about their bank balance than the club. I think he's made some good astute moves in the market, and we've got a strong side who can push for europe, and if we had Defoe i could guarentee it. Let's just focus on supporting the boys instead of having a go at the board. Fitzgerald was probably alluding to the fact that MON will be backed fully for whoever he wants when he said "world class signings". I'd sooner Fitzgerald didn't make the signings to be honest, cos MON is no mug.

5 year plan or no 5 year plan, moaning or not moaning, to go into the season losing 2 right backs is a bad mistake. If MON doesnt get RB in before midnight tonight it has to go down as mismanagement. We're gonna spend the next 3 months, at least, with a severe weakness down our right hand side.

Yeah, 5 year plan: year 1, O'Neill gets to know the squad, gets rid of the dead wood and brings in "top british talent". Year 2: Villa fall behind big spending Man City, Portsmouth and Newcastle, can't catch up with Everton as they're clearly ahead in terms of planning and fight with West Ham & Reading for 8th place. Year 3: Villa can't spend big on established names as they've not qualified for Europe again, so they sign Davies as expected and bring in a few more youngsters - at which point the club decides to call itself Aston British Youth Villa, claiming they are proud of sticking with young British talent - mainly because the scouts employed abroad can't distinguish between Lisbon and Leatherhead. Year 4: Villa manage to crawl to the top 7 (behind Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham)as Man City collapses due to Shinawatra's conviction in Thailand, Harry Redknapp leaves Portsmouth to take over at Spurs and Newcastle prove to be yet again eternal, unreliable underachievers. Year 5: O'Neill brings in 33 year old Nakamura and hails him as the best schemer in Europe, confirms Petrov ("he'll come good") and announces Villa have finally identified a right back suitable for the job. He's British and Villa wont pay over the odds, of course. Thing is people, youngsters are great, I love the fact we value our academy so much here and we clearly have talent at that level but..in order to progress - because others around us are progressing too - you also need to get out there, open the bloody cheque book and spend on some established performers. At the cost of ending up like Alan Hansen when he made that comment about United many years ago, kids can only take you so far: and not all crop of youngsters coming through end up having the talent of Scholes, Beckham, Butt and the Nevilles. And here's another major problem many seem to miss out on: those United kids had Keane, Cantona, Giggs and Ince to play with - experienced, quality proven winners who had done it all before. We don't.

That's ok Mick, as long as you're sorry....

I just think we've got a lot to be thankful for. Look at the circus down the road, the West Ham farce, Bolton fighting the drop already etc. Yeah the club said stuff, but they didn't handcuff you to the ticket office and demand you buy a season ticket. And I'm guessing all the 'moaners' had tickets under the old regime? I just don't get the negativity, but thats not my problem.

Woulfeman
Woulfeman Wrote: | 21.34BST | Aug 31, 2007

Whilst I can understand people being aggrieved at the perceived lackof signings, I think we need to ask the question: Should we buy someone for the sake of it? MON has never done that but has spent money on people who he thinks can do a job for him, eg Sutton for 6 mill at Celtic, Hartson?

As for Defoe, a good player but I suspect there is something putting MON off, attitude, tendency to talk to the press direct, I don't know but I am sure that he would spend the money if he was 100% about a player.

Now until Jan is crucial, if we are top 7 at Christmas, then we would be in a good position to get others in, Hangeland, Boswinga, Defoe etc.

MON is not a man out of his depth, he's a man with a plan.

Mick
Mick Wrote: | 21.36BST | Aug 31, 2007

I agree with most comments on here. The club told us what to expect and as of now (about 8 hours to go) they haven't met our expectations.
I think it would be a bit mistake to go into a season with only Olly as a recognised RB because he isn't good enough going forward for that position. Young Craig Gardner will try his heart out for you in that position, but we are a big club with a billionaire who owns us and we don't have a proper RB. Again Davis can play there but surely we don't want to rely on people playing in there second best positions. If we are serious that we want to go for a top six or win a cup to get into UEFA we need a very good attacking RB.
I also don't see enough goals in the team either. We need someone such as Defoe who can score the scruffy goals, get on the end of things and get 15-20 goals a season. If not I think top 8 is all we can expect this season. That then means the 5 year plan is going to be moving towards a 6 year plan!

Im happy we have got Curtis Davis as it restores some faith as MON has been after him for the whole summer and has finally got his man. CD was wanted by Spurs and we got him, im not saying it was as straight as him choosing us over Spurs but we worked hard and bagged our man.

Id like to see another 2 players come in before midnight although i doubt it will be more than 1 if any. I dont think we should pay over £10M for Defoe but i very much doubt he will end up at VP as he has stated he wants to stay at Spurs. I want MON to make a move for Adriano as he could be a bargain if we could offer the right money. I think £11M and Inter would let him go if he was prepared to come to us. Look at Anelka at Bolton.

Im not saying he would come but it would show the world our intentions if nothing else. But perhaps there isnt enough time. I think Mellberg will shift over to RB and Knight or Davis will partner Laursen, probably Knight on Sunday.

I would like to see another midfielder come in to challenge Petrov who isnt playing very well.

Im so glad Young has got an England call up and i hope he takes his chance.

To all going on a high horse regarding people complaining about the quality of Villa's transfer activity this summer: rest your irony, you're entirely missing the point anyway.

Apparently Bosingwa won't be available for transfer until January at the earliest. However O'Neill has said that there are other alternatives and he reckons there is a very good chance that we will sign at least one more player before midnight. Rosenior looks set for a switch to Reading and I'm pretty sure Arsenal won't let Hoyte leave with Gallas sidelined with a long term injury so I'm not sure who he bring in at RB if anyone.

somerset villa......... are u a blue nose?

I dont understand what you want... The crap players have been shifted out and been replaced with quality.

Would you rather have McCann or Reo coker?
Hughes or Knight?
Ridgewell or davies?

3 of our first team are in the England squad (when was the last time that happened?)

We have the best squad we have had in years, and are definately playing the best football.

We are not going to sign massive names yet as we cannot offer European football. I for one feel confident that that will be on offer next season, and bigger names will be added to this young talented squad that is being assembled at the moment.

So shut up moaning...because i dont really think you know what you are talking about.

Rant over

Up the Villa

Lets get the facts - We have more money than we have ever had, we have Martin O'Neil, we have Randy Lerner, for the first time in a long time we have a team that actually excites. Why do some people keep thinking that we will be champ league contenders overnight!!!

Lets calm down and enjoy the new Aston Villa, get behind the team.

The postings on this issue are bordeline on the ridiculous...

Randy Learner took over control of Aston Villa just over a year ago - at this stage last year did you really think that we would be challenging the top 4? If a year ago someone had said to you the following - would you have taken it:

Villa progress from the last league position?
Villa sign Ashley Young from Watford for 9m and he is in the full England squad?
Villa sign Scott Carson who is also in full England squad and keep Sorensen to leave 2 quality keepers?
Gareth Barry is captain and a member "at last" of the full England squad?
Villa sign West Ham captain Reo Coker for 8.5m
Vila sign West Ham top scorer Marlon Harewood as squad player?
Villa sign Fulham captain Zat Knight as squad player?
Villa sign West Brom captain Curtis Davies for 10m?
Villa sign Norway striker John Carew?
Villa sign Scotland striker Sean Maloney?
Villa sign Togo International who played in world cup?
Luke Moore, Gabriel Agblonglahor, Gary Cahill and Craig Gardner are members of the England U'21s?
Wilfred Bouma rediscovers his form and is a regular of the Holland back 4?

Dead wood such as Samuel, Hendrie, McCann, Djemba Djemba etc all gone?

This is without any commercial spin such as Nike etc...

I have a feeling that you would have snatched their hand off so please stop this crap as you sound pathetic - especially when you would all change your opinion completely if we were to sign Defoe before the deadline - some stratergy!

If you are genuine Villa spporters and have been going down long enough to know the crack then I suggest you knock this negativity on the head!

not really, his wikipedia looks like it was updated about 10 mins ago and there's not much you can take out of that you tube vid other than one of the commenters claims to shagging his brother..

other then that there's...

7 Moustapha Salifou | MidfielderSquad:

Born: June 1, 1983
Height: 1.80m
Weight: 69 kg

Pos: M
Age: 24
Club: Rot-Weiss Oberhausen (Germany)
User Rating: 5.5
GP 3 | G 0 | A 0 (2006 World Cup)

Caps 37 | Goals 4 (Career)
World Cup

A dynamic right-sided attacking midfielder high on creativity and vitality, but low on poise as a finisher, it was therefore ironic that he scored a vital goal on the road to Germany, the winner in the 2-1 aggregate victory over Guinea in the preliminary round of the qualifiers.

He began his career at the Madele de Lome club in Togo before heading off to Germany to play for Second Division Rot-Weiss Oberhausen. After three seasons there, he was sent on loan this season to Brest in France.

Salifou says he cannot wait to play against France in Cologne this summer. 'It will be a dream come true to be on the same pitch as Zidane, Henry and Vieira.'

Jimmy D
Jimmy D Wrote: | 02.07BST | Sep 1, 2007

Never actually heard of him but he may well turn out to be a good addition. He looks very powerful and could turn out to be a driving force in our midfield. He could be something similar to Papa Bouba Diop who proved to be a good player for Fulham in his early years. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see how good he actually is. I doubt he'll be anywhere near the starting XI early on and I think he'll have to work extremely hard to stake a claim for a place in the team. I'll be disappointed if he turns out to be our last signing of the window, we still desperately need that RB. Come on Martin pull a rabbit out of the hat before midnight, please!!

we've just signed somebody called mustaffa crap from some swiss side for 1m he plays for togo.
yet another earth shattering deal by o'niel, i bet chelsea, man u, arsenal & liverpool are shitting themselves now, more like pissing themselves with laughter.
is this bloke taking the piss, where are all the so called top quaility players we were promised, it's all been irish blarney.
how many season tickets were sold on all those empty promises which is turning out to be a pack of lies.
we have all been conned by the master of desaster, it's money under false pretences.
mind you, should we be suprised, how many big named players has o'niel ever signed in his ilustrious career, answer, none.
i'll tell you lot now, managing the top team in a 2 team contest, is no recomendation, i could manage celtic and win that league, the english game has moved on so much while he was up in jockland, he's lost touch & don't forget he was also out of football for a couple of years. he's lost the plot big time.
it proves it when he said the transfer market took him by surprise, why should it, the way transfer windows are set up makes it an auction of inflated prices, plus all the millions from tv & other media, plus loads of clubs being taken over by billionairs, surprise, what fucking surprise?

I can't believe people are so negative (What the hell is in the water in Brum - I don't live there anymore :( )

Can everyone realise Fitzgerald saying we would buy 'World Class Players' - doesnt mean squat!!! Notice it wasn't MON who's actually been in the game a while and more to the point is in charge of who's going to be bought!

It's just not possibly for a mid-table team as we have been to buy World Class Players - or at least any I would want.. they're either gonna be 35 and/or after the cash.. hardly the drive and fight we would want from players when its a wet and cold Dec playing Wigan etc..)

MON has a plan - its so god damn obviously its untrue, he's buying young, english, proven yet promissing players who all have a drive and a bit of bite about them. Whilst getting rid of players either not good enough or those not willing to fight for their place.

It makes me laugh when I read why didn't we buy:
Sneijder (Hmm Real Madrid or Villa....)
Drethe (Hmm Real Madrid or Villa again!)
Babel (Champ league qualifiers & winners vs Villa!)
Defoe (STOP WITH THE DAMN DEFOE CRAP! He obviosuly doesn't really want to leave Spurs, he obviously happy sitting ona bench as long as he can collect some cash and go partying around London!)

I'd much rather he bought smart and held onto a bit of cash for when those players with REAL quality become avaiable than splash it around like its going out of fashion on a load of risky foreigners (Man City) or a bunch of misfit crocks (West Ham)

Phh for christs sake cheer up people - stop acting like spoilt brats! We have young, english based first 11 that rivals anything but the top 4.. you should be proud!

Bright Future Wrote: | 05.41BST | Sep 1, 2007

Woodyo -

Question - Shouldnt you have a season ticket whoever we bought instead of jumping on a bandwagon?

I suggest Chelsea maybe a better option for you to support, however you would still find something to MOAN abot.

ViLLaN
ViLLaN Wrote: | 05.57BST | Sep 1, 2007

The ONLY reason people are so negative is cos Fitzgerald told us all that "top class players" would be signed and that we should be "very excited". Maybe his idea of a top class player is diff to ours but you really can't blame some people for feeling let down. We're all love Villa here and passions run high, I for one am quite pleased with our squad (except no RB), tho it'll need touchin up in Jan if we want Europe, but this Fitz plonker promised much more.

Now, the club should just let MON do the talking, Fitz and the Yanks should learn what a 'top-class player' is, and we should now all respect each others views but just get behind the team.

Time to get pissed now, goodnight people, see ya v. Chelsea!

bright future.
iv'e had a season ticket probably longer that you've been on the planet.(in fact i've got 4) thats why i'm pissed off, i've had to take this shit probably longer than you, plus i hate liars
o'niel said-
i'll bring in more players than we have let go - lie
i'll gring in better quality - lie
he said davis wanted to leave - lie (i know - fact)

how can you have confidence in a manager who decides he wants to manage a team without a right back, it's frightening, we've got 5 centre backs, 1 left back, but no right back.
his signings hardly fill you with confidence, be honest, did you want harewood at the villa, or a second div swiss player nobody has ever heard of, or consider paying upto 10m for a untried prem player. we've already got 1 petrov we dont need anymore.
you might change your mind about o'niel when youv'e seen enough of his route 1 football, take 2nd half last week 4-2-4, no midfield play, long ball shit, you'll see, give it time and everyone will be hounding him like they hounded o'dreary
bye the way, i'll always support the team no matter what

Bright Future Wrote: | 16.42BST | Sep 1, 2007

Piss poor ending to the summer. Really hope MON proves me wrong - but I'm beginning to suspect many at Villa Park suffer from the Anfield complex, as mentioned by Valdano: "stick a turd on the pitch at Anfield and some will tell that - because it's on the Anfield turf - it's a work of art. It's not a work of art, it's a turd". And still we didn`t manage to get a right back! Sorry I forgot, no negativity allowed. Suckers.
