Villa agree record fee for Ashley Young

Thursday, 18 January 07, 05:24 PM · Comments (14)

Villa have this evening agreed a fee with Watford for Ashley Young, thought to be around ?8m plus ?1.65m in add-ons.

Young has already rejected West Ham and another unnamed club but he now has the opportunity to talk to MON. Opinion is decided on whether we should spend this much on a teenager, especially a club record fee.

The Daily Mail have already written tomorrow's story (it mentions last night referring to tonight) and have gone as far as saying he's signed. Let's wait and see if he really is happy at Watford.

With Sutton or Angel spelling from the bench, this could be something big.

The transfer market really has gone crazy, nearly 10 million pounds on a relative unknown and little tried striker. Has MON gone crazy with Lerner’s money? Well only time will tell. A host of teams are looking to secure Young so this could be quite a coup. One thing is for sure, we desperately need players. I don't think MON has ever spent this amount of money on one player in his distinguished managerial career. Villa must have an eye on the premier league deal announced today. Premier League teams will now get at least 30 million pounds a season and as much as 50 million. So let’s welcome transfer fee inflation and even higher salaries. Villa need to spend money now as the competition for players in the summer will be unprecedented. I believe Lerner has told MON to get on with it. Expect to see more mega deals right up until the last minute of this transfer window. Fingers crossed Ashley Young wants to play for the Villa!

At last a big signing is on the cards. I still think Spurs might nick him but I am over the moon that weve agreed a fee at last. If we get him in then more will follow, we just need to so we mean business.

it would surprise me to pay that money but perhaps im not seeing his potential- if villa are going to compete with the best we're going to have to get in first. if he's a top player than his value will not depreciate and id rather buy him than have spent similar sums on james beattie, stanley victor, bos...... etc. attackers are always and often a risk,, with the revenue in the premier league we may as well take it.

Anyone who thinks this is a bad thing for villa is a bit mental, especially based on our current situation!

Th thing is now that Villa have a multi-millionaire owner the price will automatically go up. Also, when there are so many clubs now with a bit of 'potential cash' then prices are inflated.

However, saying that I spoke to a mate in Watford and he's said really good things about Ashley Young. He also said if Ashely Young is worth £9mn. we should be able to get £15mn. for Gabby.

I saw him make his debut last season and when Watford went up he was one of the players I said could be the difference between them staying up and going down.

Saying that, I think £9m-£10m may be a bit much but if he's got his best years ahad of him it could be a good investment and, more importantly, it sends out a message of Villa's ambition under O'Neill.

If a player had the chance to play under O'Neill and they know he has big money to stregthen the squad don't you think they'll join?

" Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill says he doesn't want to rush things with Ashley Young after the young winger cum striker travelled to the Midlands to discuss personal terms with the club following a transfer fee being agreed between Villa and Watford. Martin O'Neill adds that patience is key and he hopes the player will sign on the dotted line."

is the player holding out for spurs, they want him in his prefered position on the left wing and he would be first team choice ? is it great handling by o'neil of a young lad about to make the biggest decision of his young footballing career and carrying a huge price tag ? or is it just an excuse already having held talks and knowing he wont sign ??

your thoughts ?

Just read on the official site that MON has spoken briefly to Young, he says Young has a few things to sort out at his end, but seems keen???

Not sure what to make of this, I suppose as a young lad its a big move coming to the Midlands! Or if I were to be negative, it could be a polite way of saying no??

If it is a no then I dare say we may see him play against us tomorrow?

Thoughts????

O'Neill has just stated on the Official site that he's spoken to Young initially and he seems keen to come to Villa Park.

Obviously another club could highjack the deal but the way he shunted West Ham almost straight away indicates that he might well want to come and play for Martin O'Neill.

i suppose only comfort we have is after having o'neil for half a season now and seeing his press conferences that he is never straight forward or gives too much away. i dont think he would of said anything if he thought it wouldn't happen.

i genuinely believe the only way it wont happen is if spurs swoop late on
