Good news for Blackburn fans and Spurs fans, Villa have not and will not be following up their interest in David Bentley after the rejection of their one and only bid "some time ago".
O'Neill today admitted we had made a bid and that we would be pursuing other options.
This is the quote:
“I will tell you we put an offer in for Bentley which we thought was fair but it was rejected,” added O’Neill. This was a long time ago and we’ve not pursued that since so we’re moving on. We’ve got outer people we would be very keen to bring to the football club, all pretty decent players.”
So that is the end of that one. I'm no overly disappointed as he does seem like the sort of guy that wants the big lights and lifestyle of a modern day footballer. Not the sort of grafter MON wants in the team.
But, he's still a good footballer and will no doubt benefit whoever he ends up playing for next season, whether it's Blackburn, Spurs or somebody else.
While we're on the subject of Blackburn, the Birmingham Mail are claiming that the transfer of Friedel will be done and dusted early next week with his debut being made in the home tie against Odense on Saturday week.
This is contradictory with the news that came from the horses mouth earlier, so I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't come to fruition.
Now to some bizarre news. Remember that on-loan goalkeeper from Liverpool that Rafa wanted £10m for? Well, he's joined WBA today for a whopping £3.25m. Yes, Only £6.75m less than the quoted price.
Is it me or is Rafa a complete schizophrenic, or are Liverpool really that skint that they are taking whatever they can to raise money for players?
I mean, £3.25m is about what Carson is worth, but was Benitez trying to get Barry for Carson plus cash earlier in the season but quoting stupid money for him?
I think less and less of Rafa everyday as he comes out with or does something more stupid and ridiculous than he had done previously. He is clearly not with it and even the deluded Scousers must be a bit surprised with some of the tripe he comes out with.
That'll be probably be it until tomorrow morning when the newspapers shift into overdrive.

Glad we are not getting ripped off for bentley,He is a good player but would make or break our team.
We should should SWAP barry for Alonso and Finnan Plus a few quid coming our way :P ;)
Fair play to MON over Bentley! He clearly doesn't feel he has the right attitude/potential to warrant a £17million transfer fee.. So that is good enough for me.
Wright-Phillips .. Lets have a go for him now!
why dose o neill never budge on prices ?
To get your targets you pay waht the selling club are asking for
He wont budge on barry and now he wont budge on bentley its not like we still have doug in control
Speand the money for your target martin for once they so no you go higher its simple
its PATHETIC

I am a Spurs fan but I agree with your comments about Benitez, he uses the press to tap up and unsettle players like Gareth Barry & Robbie Keane and tries to attract them to Liverpool with the carrot of Champions League football. As for Bentley he is a decent player and will probably end up at Spurs for a ridiculous fee. Good luck to Villa for next season - hopefully one of the 'lesser' clubs can break the top 4 monopoly next season
thats why half of the youth team are travelling on what is supposed to be a very important game tomorrow. WHERE ARE THE RIGHT BACKS Martin, The striker that can actually put the ball in the net, the cover a left back, acentre half that can defend so we can get rid of that trip play Knight, the right suided midfield player, the Barry replacement??????? another six to make the numbers up./ Like i say when it comes to buying players he hasn't got a clue.
Sorry half my posyt was missing -
Lets get real here MON hasn'y got a clue when it comes tyo transfers & thats why half of the youth team are travelling on what is supposed to be a very important game tomorrow.
& my fingers are fat, i can actually spell.
You want the player? Pay the money or at least bid a second time and see what happens - no point asking Liverpool 18m for Barry when a younger player with a generous margin of improvement is not valued by the same man at anything above 10m..I feel for MON's family, I bet they live on a budget as tight as Mary Whitehouse's vagina.
MON is exactly right in not pursuing Bently for more than he thinks he's worth and I fully believe him when he says he has other good targets in mind. We have a manager who is a good judge of players and has plenty of nerve. He has repeatedly stated that we need players and he is actively pursuing them - we will have a bigger and stronger squad by the end of the window.
Unfortunately, some posters onto this site do not have the same nerve - I hope they will hold their hands up when the quality additions come in.
Bentley's going to WHL WHL WHL
Bentley's going to WHL
He Wants Europe
Like all the other GOOD players
U have like 3 or 4 good players
Agbonlahor
Barry
Young
and they would all leave at a chance
Barry Europe
Young Europe
Agbonlahor is only staying for experience and first team starts
MON knows what he is doing. keep the faith. We all know what positions we need to strengthen, so MON knows, the teams we are trying to buy off know. thats is why they are pushing up their prices. MON wont pay silly money for a player that is not a grafter.
I am keeping optimistic, if we lose the next 2 games then i will change my tune.UPTV
Jinksy - it's Friday, don't worry.
Take Damian's advice and go and have a beer!! 8)
It is more than a little frustrating to be in this position, we all believed that with Mon in charge and randy's backing we would be actually able to get some players in. I am not saying we wont but am frustrated as is evryone that we are only a few weeks away from the start of the new season and down on numbers on the threadbear team we were last year. What worries me is that when the key players lost a little form towards the end of last season we were dramatically a worse team.
Martin my plea to you is please get the right people signed, I am keeping the faith but it gets harder as the days progress.
there is definatly smthing wrong if were not intrsted in a player of his calibre. If we wernt intrested then why make an offer in the first place.I have just watched the news which showed Villa leaving for odense and i wouldnt recognise most of the players if the passed me in the street.
He does annoy me (MO'N) he's too laid back, and is over confident with 1 goalkeeper, 0 right backs 3 centre backs, 1 left back, 2 left wingers, around 4 mediocre centre midfielders, 0 right side midfielders and 3 strikers
i dont no how some people can just sit back and think yes lets not go for bently maybe someone else..
if i was mon right now id be straight back in with another bid.
the thing is yh we have signed just 1 player an personally i dont think guzan will get clearance to come to us.
but 1 buy in how many weeks it's not good enough..:@
I really hope we do not deal with liverpool.
To think of the value they have put on there players then the p poor offer they have made for our player.
They have caused so much sadness at our club with our captain now hated by some fans.
As for our teansfer policy i do not think Randy is backing the manager.
He puts lots of PR in place but in reality he gives the fans little thought
I really don't understand MON. He has one bid knocked back for Bentley and he gives up? That really isn't very good is it? Buying players is about negotiation, I can't believe he's walked away after Blackburn said no.
Ever since the news broke we'd made an offer, I was genuinely excited that this was a realistic possibility. I assumed that since it went quiet, the two clubs were working behind the scenes. And now we're finding out that nothing at all happened after that original communication? No comeback offer? No attempt to reach an agreement? That's not good enough as far as I'm concerned. Bentley is exactly the kind of player that can boost us towards the top 4 and we aren't even attempting to get him in.
Sometimes MON is far too stubborn for his own good. Massively disappointed.
Elsewhere huh? Players from the conference perhaps? I have now got a bad feeling about the forthcoming season now, Bentley would be a gamble with his attitude but for crying out loud you are supposed to negotiate. It would be good if we had an idea of the transfer budget don't you think?
Hold on people. Youhave all pinned your hopes on Bentley. What if MON got Joaquin for 15-16 Million. Would you be complaining then. Theres more than one player that can be bought for right midfield. Jeeeeeeees!
Also, what if MON has been told that Bentley WANTS to go back to london, would you want to spend 17 Million on a player that doesntreallywant to be at the club. Get a life all you doubters. Jump on MON's back atthe end of next season if its been a disaster.
When the hell is MON gon'a sign some b__tard, FFS its frustrating. F___ off GB 4 14-15mil & from the money we may get a couple of players....possibly Bently
ok my comment is to short....can we please sign 2 or 3 players is that loner enough
?????????????????????????????
:D hi VILLA FANS HOPE YOU FINISH 4 BEHIND SPURS AND THE FILTH LIVERSKINT FINISH 5 JUST A MESSAGE TO VILLA FANS DONT DO WAT WE DID AND BUY OUTFIELD PLAYERS YOU NEED A GOALY FRIEDEL WOULD BE THE MAN DONT BUY ROBBO HE IS SHOT AWAY . NA DDONT SELL BARRY TO A CLUB IN MASSIVE DEPT THEY ARE USING MONEY WAT THE AMERICAN BORRROWED FOR THE GROUND DEVELOPMENT BECAUSE IT IS NOT CLASSED AS DEPT .
Please MON if possible p___off GB and sign possibly 2 players...I think Flether afrom United could be a target & possiblily Cahill even though at the mo he is injured, plus Freidel pretty much sorted.
utv
Is sounds more likely that Bentley does not want to join the Villa and MON knows this. He's going for the bright lights of London. If villa HAD a bid excepted I believe Bently would of say NO THANKS. Mon does not need a public performance of this fact.
I have said this a few times - I am not a huge fan of Bentley and would prefer Wright-Phillips or Lennon or please please some foreign players.
However, the comments once again from MoN are absolutely unbelievable. I remain convinced that he hasn't a clue how to buy players. The Barry to Liverpool and Bentley to Villa are very similar situations - both clubs don't want to sell their best assets so if you want the players you have to meet the asking price - how can MoN be so naieve?? It beggars belief when you consider the shoe is on the other foot with regard to Barry.
The bottom line is - if MoN has a top target for any position which Bentley clearly was for him - then pay the god damn money. Mon - Randy isn't pinching money from little old ladies, he is actually loaded - please save him from it burning a hole in his pocket.
I am getting more and more depressed with each passing day.
Forget SWP, forget Lennon, forget Milner.
Get Sebastian Larsson!!!
You lot, just stop your moaning Jibba Jabba....!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;) ;) ;D ;D
Amazing how a great signing a few days ago is now seen as expensive and overated by many here. People actually think our new yank keeper is gonna be great too! I wonder why he was so cheap and nobody else bid more? Borac is at Celtic and would probably love to play in the premier league but we are supposed to be after old man Friedel instead. It's a total piss take at the moment with signings and there's every chance we will be out of european footy before the big clubs know it's started. What kind of manager makes 1 bid on a player and then decides he doesn't want him? MON hasn't got a clue in the transfer market, Harry Redknapp will sign better players than him again in this window, just like he always does!
c'mon guys, Joaquin, Bastian Schwienstieger, SWP, Aiden Mcgeady, El HAdj Diouf, Joe Cole to name but a few. What if he has a quality left sided midfielder in mind like Downing and he switches Webcam to the right, or maybe he's thinking of playing a different system.
I trust him completly, i mean at the end of the day its his reputation and credability that is on the line not our's, and if we know what needs done then you guarentee MON does, so don't panic.
MON, frustrating, YES
Stupid and willing to put his own neck and the club on the
line just to be stubborn, NO
Irish ron's right. Even if a fee had been agreed with Blackburn, Bentley would not want to play for villa and MON is not the type to pursue players who have an agenda outside of football to fill. I know us villa fans are getting a little twichy at the lack of transfer activity at the moment, but i do believe the man will come good and not only sign quality but not be conned by paying way over the odds for players.(Carson)
MON does his deals behind closed doors and he likes to announce them when they're completed. i'm sure he has several very promising irons in the fire. Our games against Odense will show his quality as a manager given what he has to work with.
HAVE FAITH IN THE MESSIAH PEOPLE AND PRAY LIKE F**k!!!
No biggy. Never been impressed by Bentley. He's never cut it at International or weekly at Prem level so i don't fully understand all this hype generating around him. As for the Carson transfer, what a knob Benitez is sometimes. We drop the price of him to £4mil. Benitez says no, he wants £10mil. But when a club comes in where has no interest in any of their players, it's £3.25mil. Thanks for being such a modest guy ;)
I really will enjoy watching Liverpool crash, burn, and get pissed on for the next 5 years. And it isn't like it's not going to happen. Rafa has rich American guys running the club, yet he has to sell players to make funds for a bid for Barry? Clearly some 'secret' debt going on there. So looking forward to seeing Everton, Portsmouth, Blackburn, and hopefully us overtake Liverpool in that hunt for 4th spot. As for 3rd...i doubt any of us could make it there.
Villa dont deserve to finish in the top half of the table next season with the squad we have on paper. Forget pregression up the table, with Man city, spurs and every other team around us spending serious dollar to improve there squads that were already Bigger and possibly on paper better than ours how can we even hope to maintain sixth with this non existent transfer window.
I am sorry but a keeper that cost less than half a mil? u need about 40 Guzans to buy david bentley... think of it that way!
Sidwell... ok back in the day he may have been the best player for a shitty team... and now he is one of many chelsea benchwarmers... he may actually be decent but he is not the kind of player that will get us into the top 4! to do that we need to be buying players that will either overshadow Young or at least compete with him for our "best player status". right now i can name a striker in every team in the top 10 last year better than gabby and carew... where are our goals going to come from?
Also... time is of the essence, we are playing an important game tomorrow! we have no right back... a keeper of no worth, god forbid bouma gets a knock... not only will there fitness be superior to ours, but our depth is appauling let alone the fact we are taking the kids to do the job of men!
And so far it looks like Barry is staying... but a hoyte walcott swap with arsenal as they get no game time and sell gabby to fund a right winger (as it seems the money is the issue) i would take... as he has no first touch to speak of...
long post but its been a long time coming
just to finish andyarkitekt comment: 'you lot stop yer moaning, Jibba Jabba was seen at the Belfry by Bhurji's mate having a brew with MON and is set to sign on last day of window and will prove a versatile acquisition as can cover all defensive positions on his own'
Johno, previously schizo'johnjamesowen' Randolph Senior the Third must have thought was sighning on to ManUtd Prawn sandwich site!!
jedi...youve hit the nail on the head there mate....i know its very annoying and we all want to see decent players being signed rite asap but ive always said...give it time!!!there is ages left in the transfer window!....in an ideal world we would have a load of new boys ready to play 2moro, but there isnt and with the standard of football in denmark 2moro should be a walk-over....although i am very nervous about it!!!...zat knight the main culprit for the nervs!!!....COME ON THE VILLA!!!spurs fan=f@ck off!!!...lets hope you spend ridiculous money again this summer and have a very poor league season again!!!hahahaha
johno...I have no idea what the hell you are saying!!!!! What the hell does all that mean...I can only presume you have understood the joke in my last comment?! I wanna be on your planet johno! ;) ;)
I would love M O'N to break the bank for D.Bentley ( £20 Million ). But i think he is after bigger club. Only the big four or Spurs have any chance of signing him in my view. He would be great 4 Villa. In our current situation though we would have to play him at right back. I love M O'N but come on splash the cash we need it. Claret and Blue Army.
Nevermind. Over that already. I'm gonna go controversial and suggest Sebastian Larsson from blues. Can play right-back (another Swede at RB) or right wing. I think Milner would be an excellent addition too, as he can play left & right and provide cover/competition. I genuinely don't think its necessary to be blowing large chunks of cash on single players when the important thing this year is depth. Also, if we show our hand now and blow £17m on Bentley, all of a sudden those £3m squad players become £8m players as soon as we come knocking. Would like to see 4-3-1-2 tomorrow with Young behind the front two and a fairly solid looking 3 of Sidders, RC & Petrov - although the same 3 with Barry instead of Petrov would be solid. Make him stay!
Downing would be a very suitable alternative to Bentley and mon's new name is Martin no'deal haha
Looking forward to the match 2mos but we really are gettin to the bear roots now, but taking the youth team is a complete disgace if you cant see that then join ya mate BHURJI's in dying slow from a rare foot fungal disease? shouldn't you be in the takeaway by now mate)
Dont come on here and give us all false infomation, grow up you stupid lame?????????????????????
As far as I'm concerned we have lost one good player from last season and that is Gareth Barry (well as good as). Mellberg is a bit of a legend but last season he played RB and did OK IMO so I'll not argue if someone wants to say we lost 2 good players.
The rest either hardly played or weren't very good when they did. In reality we have made one good signing in Sidwell (who I actually think will soon be in his stride and be better than Barry)so for me, at worst, we are one signing down (a RB) from being a similar team as last year.
Before I go on please understand that I know the squad is very light and I desperately want us to sign some more players but...
I can see no reason why a team that played so well last season should suddenly become crap just because Gareth Barry isn't playing (and we have, in effect, a replacement for him) and we are missing an OK RB. I expect tomorrow we will end up with a draw but I would be delighted with a win.
As I said earlier, I desperately want us to sign more players but some of you are becoming hysterical and making comments bordering on lunacy.
Every transfer window 'other teams' apparently overtake us in the transfer market and as a result 'we're going to get left behind' etc. etc. Well, you maybe right this season but you were wrong last season and the season before that so maybe you should just keep that in mind when you are questioning the football management credentials of MON.
You may not like the way he does it but it works for him, and for me that's good enough. In short, I don't think it's as bad as some of you think. I am as nervous now as I always have been and always will be no matter who we do, or don't, sign.
Good luck to the guys tomorrow.
fair play to O'Neill and coming out and telling us the Bentley deal is over. I must admit I was crossing my fingers, toes, shoelaces, legs, hairs, teeth, lips, whatever hoping possibly unrealistically(like Sneijder last year) that O'Neil would charm Bentley and he would be holding up a Villa Shirt soon.
Now we can get on from there, but who are we goona bloody well sign. Quote from this year and last was something like " We have the smallest squad in the premier and we have to address it........." how many players we lost this year? Carson(very fuuny about the fee, good luck though Scott, hope it all goes well), Berger(idiot told Barry to go, or was that just tactics to get out?), The Viking(again good luck, you really did wear your heart on your sleeve) and we have signed enough to cover them and more??
We have our biggest game of the season tomorrow, screw up and you will have a lot of Aangry Villa fans, especially if it's their left midfielder that scores against us.
Do love Randy and O'Neil but as said before O'Neill's transfer dealings at the last minute really give me the shats. If he knew all along he was going for Guzan, why not bid 3 weeks ago and then his work permit would be sorted and platying tomorrow
Bentley is good, but no where near 17 mil. I'm glad we aren't going for him for 17, but we better pick up SWP or Aaron Lennon then.
I'm getting sick of the lack of signings. A part of me dies everyday that goes by without a signing. We need the players. Why not sign them now?
OH yeah fantastic news that ONeill isnt into the only player we have been linked with strongly that is actually any good and has real potential!! Its typical villa style negotiation. Crap.
We are going to arrive at the new season with sweet F all compared to last season. a substandard barry in sidwell, a sidestep with keepers and maybe a right back if we are lucky. Bentley is the only decent player we;ve been linked with that we can actually get. Forget about people like Diego and Van der vaart they will only play champions league. WE DO NOT HAVE A CHANCE NEXT SEASON WITH THIS SHITTY TRANSFER POLICY. look forward to doom and gloom
"However, if Man City win today and we beat Everton next week, we're fifth because of our better goal difference. Europe next season anyone?"
Counts for shit if we can't beat Odense.
Let's donate UEFA qualification to Olof, he'd want us to earn it and win it.
utterly pathetic. The fact is oneil in saying he bid for Bentley has admitted he wants him. so ffs pay what is necessary!!! thats what u have to do in modern football martin. one would think as a premiership manager u would know this. You are a joke!!! exactly the same happened with defoe!! oneil is honestly the worst maanger i have ever seen in football in the transfer market. he wont pay the money for class and just buys complete dross for 4m.
If u want a player just pay the money - he is saying that to liverpool with Barry so f*cking pay up for Bentley!!!
Our squad is a complete disgrace. we have no right back, no cover at left or centre back, no decent wide right player and no 1st choice goalie. its honestly so unproffessional and an embarrassment. many of my friends are even starting to take the piss out of villa and our 10 man squad or whatever it is.
our first competitive game is today we have 4 less players than last year!!!! we have 7 less players in our 1st team squad than any other premiership tema. so if we sign 6 which wont happen we will still have the smallest squad. why are u doing this oneil u pric!!!
and please dont some of u come on here saying we have an abundancce of youth team players coming through. we have said that for 15 years!!! and who of them that have come through can u say have ever got good enough to start for a side playing champs league or even uefa. they havent been so are hardly going to help get us to the next level!!
SACK ONEIL!!! Yep thats right i said it - get someone in that can atttract players - motivation and moral is all good to get to the level we are at and position we are at but i assure you oneil cannot take us further than this. he is a manager of a good set of pros that over achieves and finishes top half - thats what he had at leicester and to be honest celtic as well.
thanks for steadting thse ship MART but i have had enough of you u f@cking snail!!!
I think MON is gambling on us winning the Inter-toto game for us to bring these players in, big gamble....if we lose, we have to honestly question him, IMO can't see us losing over two legs, fcuk Bentley, good player..but over rated, if he was any good the top four would want him..id rather have steed malbrank..sorry bad spelling..Well BHURJI's statement on Bentley is floored then..I would rather us trying to get Kenwyn Jones from Sunderland
Can we just hire someone twice a year to make our transfers for us and just call MON back from holiday when we are done....If MON can get the best out of average players just imagine what he could do with quality.I hope our boys got some rest in the off season, its gonna be another long season......oh thats right we had like six weeks off and our first game is today.........disgraceful
tonebone- if we sack oneil who do u think well get. we cant get the likes of scolari that can both bring in top players and also win us games. and if oneil has given up on bentley is obviously didnt want him that much. im sure theres other targets in mind.
I cant believe that you lot are moaning so much...! You have a very good manager with a proven track record, plenty of US Dollars to spend, some decent young players and a fair sized fan base and crowds! Plus you have European football to look forward to.
I am a Blackburn fan and we have an unproven young(ish) manager (Paul Ince), not much money at all to spend, some good players but not a big squad, medium to low crowds and european footie!
You can have Bentley (anyone can - please) for 12 million and you can have (looks like u already got!)Friedel.
BTW Friedel is one of the three most consistent keepers in the premiership over the last 5 seasons. He still has at least two good seasons at this level in him and you now have a good base to build up your defence from with him. We wish him well.
Get your early season optimism out of the drawer, right now the possibilities are endless - you could win: Premiership, EUFA Cup, FA Cup and Carling Cup (or whatever its called now) all things are possible until you start playing!
Good luck for this season, we aim to finish above you, and I know if we do it wll be 1) A Fantastic season for the Rovers 2) We will qualify for Europe as you will be highly placed also 3) Some BIG club will come along and take Paul Ince and all our best players (again)....
Exiled Rover - France
it's not about sacking o'neill
it's about providing him with real money
he is working to a budget and when you need 10 players to be competing with top 4 and your budget isn't £100mn. you're going to struggle
we need more investment in the playing side of things and not more PR that there is money available - but lots of proof

I concur, well said that man.
Damian,
Surely the blame lays with either MoN or Lerner. If MoN has the money to spend which the club continually says he has - then why has he not spent it??? Or else he simply does not have the money - in which case Lerner and Villa are full of sh#t. I am afraid that one of these must be true.
Ok, so we have pulled out of Bentley after just one bid - not good. I was hoping he would be our big signing that we had planned for before the Barry debarcle started.
I question whether we do have the funds available to increase the squad with the number of quality players we need.
The only question for me is, is where has all the money gone? We have sold/ realeased a large number of players since RL took over. We have brought in at a next cost of aroudn 10million the additions we have made. W ehave at the same time got rid of some big earners here at VP, so where has the savings from that gone? We have had the best average gates for many many years - this club must be its most profitable ever, couple that with a high finish in the PL and hte bonus payments.
Is RL running this club for profit now or is he going to invest into the playing squad to profit in the future?
I think the next 6 weeks will answer that question, I just hope they have not been too short sighted to think that we effectively have a bi into the UEFA Cup because if we fail the fans will not be happy.
Lets be honest right side of midfield is one of the most common positions to find a talented player so although Bentley would of been great I would rather see us sign SWP for a fraction of the price! We must surely be having negotaiations for us to just give up on Bentley so easily
stuff it gutted bentley is not gonna come. but lets see wot o'neill has up his sleeve. he must have other options if he gives up the bentley route jus like that.
it is dissapointin an i hoped bentley wud sign, but im not gonna slate o'neill until aug and only if we are in the same position squad wise.
Why do you guys take so long to ok messages????????
A good young hungry player, but one good game in five isn't justification for £17m price tag, and one long range goal once every ten games is not going to add to our squad. I think Bentley is the classic case of ego far outstrips talent, even £10m was too much for him.
He has got a big ego, watch him for england and he takes nearly all the free kicks or argues his point over them. He will goone way or the other greatness or....
I would prefer SWP though he has more to prove and if he stops treating crosses like dracula he would be a MON type of player.
We really do need to buy some defenders we was short last year and are short again this year, Cahill being sold looks a very strange decision now
I cant say im happy to see we wont be pursueing any further intrest in David Bentley. His qualities would improve us a lot, and would take some of the workload off Ashley Young.
Id like to see MON make a bid for Galatasaray's Arda Turan now.
