At some points yesterday I thought it'd might've been European Champions playing Sheffield United. I hope it was more Martin O'Neill than the inspiration of seeing the 1982 European Cup winning team parade Villa Park prior to kick off.
O'Neill has finally managed to get the team to work together successfully, but I hope it doesn't take this long next season after new players have been bought in.
There was some slick passing and we stood up well to the physicalness of Sheffield United. I don't mean dirty by any means, but they tried to use their muscle and players like Gabby, as small as his frame is, stood firm.
Berger and Barry controlled the game and Berger's intelligence stood out, particularly with his well taken goal. Pace was in abundance and with some neat passing there were several times when Sheffield United were taken apart. Ashley Young's goal was evidence of that.
Our 19 chances to their 9 also tells a story. While we were dominant they certainly had their chances. We were pretty solid at the back but against other teams I feel we may well have conceded. Maybe just the one, but still it only takes a goal to invigorate a side.
Unfortunately Blackburn also won yesterday and they have Spurs and Reading left. Bolton got a good beating so fingers crossed we can head up to the Reebok and do our part. I really do want a 10th place finish but it is going to rely heavily on Blackburn slipping up twice.
As long as we finish on a high it'll be good enough to push on for next season.
UP THE VILLA!

I Live in Ireland now,but villa will always be me.I wish I could have been there to see the boys parade round the ground.I was 9 and 10 when we won the league and the European Cup(when you had to win the league to qualify not 2nd 3rd or 4th)and remember watchin sid and shaw and the boys I think it was a great idea by Randy and martin keep it up lads,Ill be over next season to watch the boys.
Great preformance and a great day alround ,even neil Warnock praised us in a round about way by saying "Villa would have beaten alot of teams the way they played today". 1st time ive ever heard him say anything worth listening to
great performance against sheff utd. we played the best game all season, and wev'e got an excellent chance of beating bolton, especially when there down about big sam ditching them at the very end of the season!
At the beginning of the season we were playing with gritty determination and grinding out results, at the end of season we're playing some slik, skillful stuff and getting results. Grrreat. To top it off we've finished above Newcastle and Middlesborough. Cool.
Great game, fantastic result. Respect to those Sheffield United supporters who also appauled the parade of European Cup winners.
...does anyone know why Petrov was missing? Just read "late withdrawal" in the press...?
Petrov was dropped for reasons unknown but it seems to have been a good decision, Berger was my man of the match. Although it would more likely have been Petrov for Gardner. UTV
