Was it a former Aston Villa player who got sent off for £50,000?

Saturday, 05 April 08, 05:26 AM · Comments (27)

I presume that everybody has heard the big story broken by The Independent, claiming that a professional footballer has announced at the Sporting Chance clinic he paid off a £50,000 gambling debt by fixing a British match which his team lost within the last two seasons.

Just in case you haven't, you can read it here. But who is this mysterious player?

This is pure speculation on my part and is based solely on the fact that I have heard this incident involves a former Premier League player getting himself sent off and having three of his team mates receive bookings to pay off debts.

As most of us are also aware, a well known former Aston Villa player recently came out saying he had debts of over £400,000 despite earning as much as £75,000 a month for playing the game we all love.

Djemba Djemba also played in a Championship match on 30th January 2007 in which they lost 1-0 to Derby County.

During this match Burnley had three players booked in Mahon, Foster and Harley and a certain Mr Djemba Djemba had himself sent off for two yellow cards.

What are the chances of this happening, all in the last fifteen minutes of the match?

So there you have it; case closed by Chris, allegedly.

I have a feeling that this post from Chris, while pure speculation and filed under speculation, may very well get a few strange comments.

Could be very accurate. I was banking on Jeffers being the player or Bowyer.

Bowyer is passionate, I doubt it would happen.

Will we find out eventually?

Defamation. This post should be taken down

AFAIK DJ's debts weren't from gambling.

As I said above this is just my guess and i did base it alot on the fact that he met the criteria "he got sent off and asked three of his teammates to get booked in a match they lost."

Jeffers has been sent off twice once for Everton against Liverpool in '99 and once for Arsenal in community sheild in 2003 so both were more than two seasons ago.

It's never been said that his debts were a direct result of gambling but there was talk of him and other Man Utd players blowing alot of money on betting a few years back

Not So Silent Bob you could be onto something here! Maybe Damo's an ex-player. Well, he wishes!

Just want to point out to Caleb that Chris doesn't actually acuse DJx2 of being the player who was bribed, just showing an incident that could be the incident in question or coincidental. I don't think it's defamation as the incident pointed out above did actually happen.

Doesn't matter if Pompey win the cup or not as far as intertoto is concerned as they haven't applied this season.

I think Everton may be beyond us so it's refreshing to know that our current position would get us into Europe, albeit at the expense of the summer holidays. Hopefully that won't matter either as we'll have signed a hatful of players to give the lads a well deserved break.

UTV!
