Wilfred Bouma played his first ninety minutes of competitive football since buggering up his ankle in the Odense match at Villa Park in July and will, I have no doubt, be knocking on the door of the manager very soon, asking for his place back.
It's fantastic news and by all accounts it was a fantastic match up against a Chelsea team not short of quality. With Bouma hopefully back soon, it will hopefully mean we can see Luke Young back at right back with Cueller moving into a centre back position.
In other news, which I quite fancy is make or break news, Isaiah Osbourne has signed for Nottingham Forest on a two-month loan deal.
Now, this happened yesterday, but I've had time to think about this and with all the competition for first team football at the club, especially in central midfield, you've got to fancy that his really is make or break for the player.
There is no doubt he's a very competent player but it could be a case of he just needs regular football and that Martin O'Neill wants to see him in more competitive surroundings. No doubt we'll be kept up to date.
So, with no more news, I'm off into the garden. If you've got anything interesting that I've missed, post it below and if you haven't already, click here and let us know who your Aston Villa untouchables are.

I think it'll be good for Osbourne, he definately needs first team experience. Whether or not he is good enough for the Premiership I don't know, I sorta feel he would be better off in the Championship with his older brother Isaac who plays at Coventry. But it's loans like these that give him the oppurtunity to prove himself. Its not as if we're short on central midfielders, and he'd have a hard time getting ahead of Barry, Petrov, Reo-Coker, Gardner and perhaps even Sidwell
Slightly funny though, when both clubs announced the loan deal, the links on each club's respective website led to error pages. I was reading a blog by a Forest fan who said that even the internet couldn't quite believe Forest had actually made a signing.
2 positives then...that makes a change! lol

I'm Mr Positive lately too ..
Cueller moving into a centre back position.??
Not sure he should be moving anywhere except the bench!
He just has not filled me the confidence whenever or wherever he has played so far and he cant pass for toffee!
Didnt think i'd ever say it but I think i'd rather stick with Zat until Laursen is back.
Hopefully Osbourne can improve and show MON what he's made off
Derby_Villain
But thats his preferred position .. it's like asking me to hoover the house - I can do it, but the wife will still find fault.
Bouma coming back is a god-send, lets hope he can get fully fit in the next couple of weeks and makes a come back in the 1st team soon.
I feel a bit sorry for Osbourne, when I first saw him in the reserves when he was first coming through he looked excellent, and his first few appearances for the 1st team also looked good, however he hasn't pushed on and finds himself way down the pecking order. I wish him well at Forest and hope he comes back the better player for the experience, he's definitely got the talent and he's still young at 22.
Damian I think you're quite kind refering to Osbourne as competent, I doubt very much we'll see him in a Villa shirt again, and I think it's questionable whether he'll shine even at championship level.
As for Cuellar, has to be given a go at centre half before we know what he's capable of, I think the run at right back has really knocked his confidence.
Great to have Bouma back but we shouldn't expect miracles straight away, it was a shocking injury and he's been out a fair while, I have no problem with Shorey and can't understand MON's reluctance to play him.
Hey Damian we became friends 3 hours ago!
I agree with Hector, that is probably the last we see of Osbourne unless we get a lower division team in one of the cups.
With a bit of luck Laursen will be following Bouma back to fitness very soon.

Willie B coming hopefully will give us a boost! and a bit more natural shape. Cant wait for laursen back too, there'll be no more confusion infront of our box, ie knight and davies against everton in the cup!
I'm betting a virtual pint Osbourne finishes his loan and at the end of the season gets sold to someone like Preston.
osbourne is a disgrace. him and his chin need to leave the club and go to a smaller club
bouma is a leg-end
wasim
why is he a disgrace? i'm sure you've said that for a response - but why?
damo you like your posts this week
it was priity quiet over the england week now theres 1/2 a day
i feel spoilt lol! completely losing where my last comments were but heyy.
might want to add on that Hesk is injured with his ackilies heal (cant spell)
Reply to wasim:
he hasnt been given a chance to prove him self. he's only played 3 games with 2 satrts. how can anyone prove them selfs.
i think that osbourne needs to move on to another club. whenever he has been in a uefa cup game where he was given a chance he has played poorly. he lacks upper body strength and is muscled off the ball too easilly.
nobody disputes the big chin part of my post though
Reply to wasim:
the chins right, but i just think with this loan he will come back so much better.
Hopefully better then sidwel (not hard)

how can you say this.. Osbourne still is only not old, he is looking to seek for first team footbal and in a club like nottingham i think he sees a chance!
M'ON obviously sees him as useless at this time but hopefull this lon spell will put his confidence up very high so he will get good
also i have seen a picture of him... his chin is huge!! UGLY MOFO :p
please excuse my english..

I don't expect Wilfred to contribute much to this campaign, if he does it's an achievement because he has a lot of ground to make up. Cuellar has got to be put down as one for next season, like Petrov turned out to be. My only problem with him is he seems so similar in style to Davies.
Although a lot of people have slagged off the whole Uefa thing you have to accept that is gave us the opportunity to test certain players, not least Osbourne - and they were found wanting.
gr8 to see bouma back in action hopefully he'll be back for the spurs game. as for isiah this could be good for him he needs some games. could the loan lead to a permament move ?
bring on the city im goin for 1-0 villa with carew scoring again !

Sorry Damo slightly off subject!

I know King Carlos won the SPL players award, but i for one have not been overly impressed with his performances at rigt back. So hopefully playing at centre half will improve him. My biggest concern has been his distribution. A good example of this was the Stoke game where he just hoofed the ball up field following their first goal. In my post match comment i referenced our(but actually meant his) inwilingness to hold the ball for the final few minutes, but perhaps that is exactly the job of the full backs. They receive the ball from the centre and distribute effectively. We shall see, but KK is not yet ahead of zat and curtis.Any comments?

I know this is a blog and I've seen a fair few ridiculous comments in my time but this has to be the dumbest one I've ever seen! (the first part of it that is)
King Carlos is an out and out centre back. Imagine Steve Bruce or Tony Adams of old trying to be versatile anywhere else on the pitch. He was immense for Rangers because he played regular football in the same position.
I'm hoping by the time we play Spurs on the 15th, Freddy will be fit enough and Luke can slot back in at RB. Good news about Bellamy and Robinho if true, they would cause us chaos at the back. Citeh defence is shocking at times and can see Gabby giving them the run around and possibly scoring?

are they out like? i heard someone say it but i cant find it any where the club saying it :S
going off topic for a minute Blues have signed Ulysses De La Cruz ha ha.
McLeish wont be happy until he has an entire team of old Villa players - the Blues fans must really hate him for it
I hear he has put in cheeky bids for Derek Mountfield and Kevin Richardson and is keeping his fingers crossed!

Good luck to Osbourne but I don`t think he`ll be here next season although I hope he gets his head and chin down and proves me wrong.
My untouchable would be Luke Young LB RB good on the ball, links midfield and some of his tackles are immense,
Damian is that £1.50 stream link showing the game tonight and is it good quality?!

oh who the hell they going to play up front ? becuase they always play 451 dont they?
not really followed man city new really seen them play but they only score sometimes because of robo of bellend.
reading that and seeing how we played against stoke plus Villas out to prove a point we have this in the bag 3-0 Villa !
maybe 3-1.

i have been on the web site and the fantasy football one all day.

Just the fact they have lost 3 there 1st team players,

Maybe 0-0 1st half but after that there lower team is rubbish so 3-0 Villa.
Vassell to play? bugger, always nets against the Villa
Reply to Ipbopmalik:
Yes, yes, and yes. Playing Carlos Cuellar out of position is in my opinion O'Neill's biggest blund this season. If anyone saw any of Rangers performances in the UEFA Cup last season then you would know that without Cuellar there is no way Rangers would've made the final.
Great news on Bouma, do you think he will play in the reserves again before the match with Tottenham?

The problem is that Daruis always scores against us, however Man Citys defence is terrible so I see us scoring a couple. We have got that great away record as well (touch wood

I think we'll need to win on Wednesday though as barring a miracle, Arsenal will win tonight at the Baggies. My bet is on Arshavin to score 1st goal in a 2-0 win.
Reply to KG2008:
arsnal will win tonight no matter how much we pray it will be 2/3-0 only thing we need to worry about bar winning Man C is that this wont spark a ars revival.
If liverpool lose tonight we could level with them
goin to man city tomoz.....be my first away match...looking foward to it hope we win...2-0 carew x2

Thats the thing, the position we've got ourselves in now means that we only have to worry about our results.

I hate to be negative but depite the hype King Carlos has been terrible since he joined although mainly paid out of position. Still, rb should be a piece of piss for a decent centre half if you aren't expected to be too adventurous.

I admire your optimism and hope you are right. Look at Man Citys record at home though - it is excellent. Prior to this season they have also been a bogey team for us so I am pessimistic but hope this is just me being a miserable bastard. Today is 1st time I've been able to come on this site since Stoke and have been avoiding papers and Sky as well. I know I'm ating like a 10 year old but I felt physically sick when we lost that game and I've not been able to face anything football. Ok, my exile has only been 48 hours so no exactly showing much by way of stamina but still pretty miserable

LINK here for the Arsenal West Brom game if anyone else is interested. 1-1 Already, great free kick equaliser for the brom after conceeding a pathetic first after 4 mins.
WBA 1 - 1 Arsenal and only 7 minutes gone. looks like a good game
Just seen Arse first goal. Carson is pants and to think liverscum wanted 10mill
Good luck to osbourne i always thought he'd come good but sadly hasn't had the chance due to our healthy stock of midfielders. and we'll beat Man City as our away form is shit hot this season, i also hope it is bojinov that hughes pick as the guy can't do a warm up without snapping a ligament somewhere.
I Think we should bid for Gerrard on the basis he's english and he's always wanted to play with Barry, make of that what you will.

Arsenal 3-1 up now, West Brom are absolutly pathetic in defence, look quite good going forward but have nothing to back it up at the back. It's going to be 5+ for Arsenal by the end of the night I would think which stuffs our goal difference up too..
If the gap gets down to 3 points tonight I fear its over. The difference between us and Arsenal is they have been here and seen it all before. That idiot Wenger has and will continue to use mind games to get above us.
Someone said in one of the papers last week that no side with 51 points at that stage of the season has finished outside the top 4 in Premiership history.
Watch Villa become the first.
Reply to Jimbo Daventry villa:
oh well at least we will have achieved something this season then
West Brom beating Arsenal was never going to happen. We just have to concentrate on our own game, and with Bellamy and Robinho out we really ought to be okay tomorrow.
Wins for Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea.
Watch us crumble under the pressure.
Watch the so-called fans crumble under the pressure, more like.
Who cares what Arsenal do...Our destiny is in our own hands, and if 4th slips away, then the team AND Mr. O'Neil have only themselves to blame
Keep the faith boys, a win tomorrow night and everything will be well with the world again
i hope we beat man city 2mo, but do you guys realise how shit of a record we have against them at there gaff...the best we'll get is a draw..we've already crumbled under the pressure, lets get this right we're not used to be in this position challanging this late into the season for the champs league..good ridence to Osbourne, awful footballer..i hope he never gets chance to wear the villa shirt again
Reply to clevelandvillian:
Spot on, it's completly up to us. I think Arsenal may well catch us and move ahead but that we will run away with it after the utd match. Their fixtures are a lot worse than ours. Come on Boys do the business tomorrow so we have a bit of positivity going into the next 4 fixtures!
last sat i was at the matt skelton fight i saw agbonlahore there untill at least twelve oclock the night before an incredably important match also at the after party at a well known pub in bham aka the dubliner isiah osborne was there till 4 in the morning my point is with arsenal within three points of us now and a tricky away game tom how serious are we in securing cl next season
Reply to vogra:
How exactly have we crumbled under pressure. We lost to Chelsea (who are a better side) by a marginal goal and completely outplayed Stoke (as expected) and were silly to concede so late on.
Citeh have far more to lose than we do, and for this reason I believe they are more likely to crumble. I don't buy in to bogey teams, that's just weak mentality. We will beat them because we have a better team, and we will be up for it.
Stop the pessimism, we are well in contention. Just because other teams around us have won for a change, doesn't mean that we will capitulate. We have more reasons to be cheerful with the impending return of JC, the impending return of Bouma and the scintillating form of Petrov and Barry.
Apologies, above should read, the return of JC.
Bouma will be a bit rusty, but he'll be back in no time. Osbourne I also feel is on a make or break mission, but regardless he is in dire need of some competitive matches. Two positives imo!
untouchables are luke young ashley young laurson and petrov. milner is touchable by gardner barry is touchable by gardner (just about) friedal is touchable by guzan, all the strikers are touchable by each other and davies knight and cuellar are all touchable by each other. definitely just the 4 untouchables at the minute i reckon
Iv just had a look at the upcoming fixtures for Arsenal and Villa.
Not only do are they still in 2 competitions, sure to qualify bringing at least 5 more games... but they have a pretty difficult set of games too.
Ok so villa have man u and liverpool, they do too... AND CHELSEA. cant see them getting more than 4 points if they are lucky there. Towards the end of the season they will be playing these Big teams, fighting for their champions league lives, AND if they go far in the cups, which i really hope they do, playing their asses off against world class teams, maybe even to extra time! Not only that but we have 3 points on them AND a game in hand!
If thats not looking good then tell me what is?!
ARSENAL ARE ON THE UP EDUARDO AND ADEBAYOR ARE BACK 4 THE FA CUP AGAINST BURNLEY ON SUNDAY AND WALCOTT IS SUPPOSED TO BE BACK AGAINST ROMA FABREGAS AND ROSICKY BACK IN THE FIRST TEAM IN 3 WEEKS INTERNATIONAL BREAK IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS SO FAB AND ROSICKY ARE ONLY GOING TO MISS BLACKBURN IN THE PREM NOW THEY SHOULD BE BACK 4 NEWCASTLE IF NOT THEN THEN 100% MAN CITY ARSENAL WILL FINISH 4TH THEIR GETTIN ALL THEIR TOP PLAYERS BACK.
Reply to 2pac:
I hope you're suggesting that you'll be beating either Chelsea or Liverpool to 4th place cos it wont be us. How is London 2pac?
Every time i watch Cuellar play his pass selection is poor, when you have players like barry and Petrov in front of you just give it to them and let them do their job, instead of giving it away which happened alot in the stoke game.
When team's come to villa park to put 10 players behind the ball why not try Heskey and carew up top?
As for untouchables Brad Friedel must be in there, he's the difference between last season and the current season, when it's backs against the wall who would you rather have Carson or Friedel?
Reply to 2pac:
2pac - Not a wind up, serious question. Do you think all these players coming back will instantly hit top form, or be any where near the levels they were before injury?
We have Bouma coming back after a long long absence, a dislocated and broken ankle. I would love to think he will walk back into the starting 11 and be as good as he was for us last season, but i'm guessing this will take time. The same will go for Laursen when he returns in 3 weeks (with luck!)
I wouldn't get carried away about any huge input these players will have on your side in the coming weeks. It's perfectly plausible that playing them would actually detract from what you currently have.
I just had a little browse to see where this blog started and this was one of the first posts ever added to this blog - LINK - on 23rd May '05, and I think it's perfect reading for some of us
Lets not get too down about things whatever happens tonight! Lets just support our club and get behind the boys in their final push for 4th or better!
I really don't care what Arsenal do, they where always going to beat West Brom. what does it mean that they did? It mean that they are still 3 points behind us and have played a game more. Thats what counts.
I've said before that Villa need to concentrate on our own games and forget about anything else. If we can get through the next 5 games relatively unhurt and get 7 points we'll be in a great position.
And for all those whi are saying we have blown it because we have lost 1 in 15 league games then I suggest you get a life. The only thing that counts is where we end up after 38 games and i for one believe that we will finish top 4!
Lets all get behind Villa and not sulk like little girls when it doesn't always go our way (which it won't, but thats life).
UTV, 3-1 victory tonight!
It sucks to see people at Villa Park booing and reading so much crap on the net and such. We are having a terrific season and the one thing that is for sure is that our team will go out and give 110% every match.
Thanks to Martin we seem to have a team full of players with real heart and soul. We may be guilty of having too small a squad or at times not enough quality or experience, but you cannot deny the spirit and drive of the team. We are a team in every sense of the word, and everyone plays (Often out of position) for the team. It is something that we have grown accustomed to, but there are times where we should just stop and get some perspective to where we are and where we have come from.
The remarkable qualities that our team has shown throughout this season is something we should not take for granted. Because not many fans can say that about their team. utv
There was an undercurrent of booing at the end of the Game amongst the normal applause possibly from the Holt
I do not think we should give an crendence to the Rags that reported it by siasing it here
