Wilfred Bouma back and Osbourne out to prove himself with competitive football at Nottingham Forest

Tuesday, 03 March 09, 05:09 AM · Comments (121)

Wilfred Bouma played his first ninety minutes of competitive football since buggering up his ankle in the Odense match at Villa Park in July and will, I have no doubt, be knocking on the door of the manager very soon, asking for his place back.

It's fantastic news and by all accounts it was a fantastic match up against a Chelsea team not short of quality. With Bouma hopefully back soon, it will hopefully mean we can see Luke Young back at right back with Cueller moving into a centre back position.

In other news, which I quite fancy is make or break news, Isaiah Osbourne has signed for Nottingham Forest on a two-month loan deal.

Now, this happened yesterday, but I've had time to think about this and with all the competition for first team football at the club, especially in central midfield, you've got to fancy that his really is make or break for the player.

There is no doubt he's a very competent player but it could be a case of he just needs regular football and that Martin O'Neill wants to see him in more competitive surroundings. No doubt we'll be kept up to date.

So, with no more news, I'm off into the garden. If you've got anything interesting that I've missed, post it below and if you haven't already, click here and let us know who your Aston Villa untouchables are.

I think it'll be good for Osbourne, he definately needs first team experience. Whether or not he is good enough for the Premiership I don't know, I sorta feel he would be better off in the Championship with his older brother Isaac who plays at Coventry. But it's loans like these that give him the oppurtunity to prove himself. Its not as if we're short on central midfielders, and he'd have a hard time getting ahead of Barry, Petrov, Reo-Coker, Gardner and perhaps even Sidwell ;)

Slightly funny though, when both clubs announced the loan deal, the links on each club's respective website led to error pages. I was reading a blog by a Forest fan who said that even the internet couldn't quite believe Forest had actually made a signing.

Cueller moving into a centre back position.??

Not sure he should be moving anywhere except the bench!
He just has not filled me the confidence whenever or wherever he has played so far and he cant pass for toffee!

Didnt think i'd ever say it but I think i'd rather stick with Zat until Laursen is back.

Bouma coming back is a god-send, lets hope he can get fully fit in the next couple of weeks and makes a come back in the 1st team soon.

I feel a bit sorry for Osbourne, when I first saw him in the reserves when he was first coming through he looked excellent, and his first few appearances for the 1st team also looked good, however he hasn't pushed on and finds himself way down the pecking order. I wish him well at Forest and hope he comes back the better player for the experience, he's definitely got the talent and he's still young at 22.

Damian I think you're quite kind refering to Osbourne as competent, I doubt very much we'll see him in a Villa shirt again, and I think it's questionable whether he'll shine even at championship level.

As for Cuellar, has to be given a go at centre half before we know what he's capable of, I think the run at right back has really knocked his confidence.

Great to have Bouma back but we shouldn't expect miracles straight away, it was a shocking injury and he's been out a fair while, I have no problem with Shorey and can't understand MON's reluctance to play him.

I agree with Hector, that is probably the last we see of Osbourne unless we get a lower division team in one of the cups.

With a bit of luck Laursen will be following Bouma back to fitness very soon.

i think that osbourne needs to move on to another club. whenever he has been in a uefa cup game where he was given a chance he has played poorly. he lacks upper body strength and is muscled off the ball too easilly.

how can you say this.. Osbourne still is only not old, he is looking to seek for first team footbal and in a club like nottingham i think he sees a chance!

I don't expect Wilfred to contribute much to this campaign, if he does it's an achievement because he has a lot of ground to make up. Cuellar has got to be put down as one for next season, like Petrov turned out to be. My only problem with him is he seems so similar in style to Davies.

Although a lot of people have slagged off the whole Uefa thing you have to accept that is gave us the opportunity to test certain players, not least Osbourne - and they were found wanting.

I know King Carlos won the SPL players award, but i for one have not been overly impressed with his performances at rigt back. So hopefully playing at centre half will improve him. My biggest concern has been his distribution. A good example of this was the Stoke game where he just hoofed the ball up field following their first goal. In my post match comment i referenced our(but actually meant his) inwilingness to hold the ball for the final few minutes, but perhaps that is exactly the job of the full backs. They receive the ball from the centre and distribute effectively. We shall see, but KK is not yet ahead of zat and curtis.Any comments?

King Carlos is an out and out centre back. Imagine Steve Bruce or Tony Adams of old trying to be versatile anywhere else on the pitch. He was immense for Rangers because he played regular football in the same position.

I'm hoping by the time we play Spurs on the 15th, Freddy will be fit enough and Luke can slot back in at RB. Good news about Bellamy and Robinho if true, they would cause us chaos at the back. Citeh defence is shocking at times and can see Gabby giving them the run around and possibly scoring?

Yes, yes, and yes. Playing Carlos Cuellar out of position is in my opinion O'Neill's biggest blund this season. If anyone saw any of Rangers performances in the UEFA Cup last season then you would know that without Cuellar there is no way Rangers would've made the final.

The problem is that Daruis always scores against us, however Man Citys defence is terrible so I see us scoring a couple. We have got that great away record as well (touch wood ;) )

I'm convinced we are going to lose against City. But we will qualify for Champs League, this is just going to be one of those games I believe, part of a bad patch with a strong finish. Still, I was convinced we'd beat Stoke, I was right for 90 minutes! Still sulking about it if I'm honest

Yes, yes, and yes. Playing Carlos Cuellar out of position is in my opinion O'Neill's biggest blund this season. If anyone saw any of Rangers performances in the UEFA Cup last season then you would know that without Cuellar there is no way Rangers would've made the final.
Great news on Bouma,...

I hope so, he needs the match fitness although I think he will slot in comfortably. I'd like to see Ash play a free role similar to Ronaldo and Gabby to use more width as he's quite capable of making some decent crosses.

going off topic for a minute Blues have signed Ulysses De La Cruz ha ha.

McLeish wont be happy until he has an entire team of old Villa players - the Blues fans must really hate him for it :)

I hear he has put in cheeky bids for Derek Mountfield and Kevin Richardson...

Ulysses is a great man who sends money back to his village and has bank rolled bring the entire village up to a decent standard of living - clean water etc despite being on a modest wage (by premiership standards). He always gave his all even if he wasn't the most gifted of players

Despite my hatred of Small Heath I wish him well

Just the fact they have lost 3 there 1st team players,
if we lost 3 of ours we wouldnt cope thjat long.
Maybe 0-0 1st half but after that there lower team is rubbish so 3-0 Villa.

I admire your optimism and hope you are right. Look at Man Citys record at home though - it is excellent. Prior to this season they have also been a bogey team for us so I am pessimistic but hope this is just me being a miserable bastard. Today is 1st time I've been able to come on this site since Stoke and have been avoiding papers and Sky as well. I know I'm ating like a 10 year old but I felt physically sick when we lost that game and I've not been able to face anything football. Ok, my exile has only been 48 hours so no exactly showing much by way of stamina but still pretty miserable

How exactly have we crumbled under pressure. We lost to Chelsea (who are a better side) by a marginal goal and completely outplayed Stoke (as expected) and were silly to concede so late on.

Citeh have far more to lose than we do, and for this reason I believe they are more likely to crumble. I don't buy in to bogey teams, that's just weak mentality. We will beat them because we have a better team, and we will be up for it.

Stop the pessimism, we are well in contention. Just because other teams around us have won for a change, doesn't mean that we will capitulate. We have more reasons to be cheerful with the impending return of JC, the impending return of Bouma and the scintillating form of Petrov and Barry.

Not only do are they still in 2 competitions, sure to qualify bringing at least 5 more games... but they have a pretty difficult set of games too.

Ok so villa have man u and liverpool, they do too... AND CHELSEA. cant see them getting more than 4 points if they are lucky there. Towards the end of the season they will be playing these Big teams, fighting for their champions league lives, AND if they go far in the cups, which i really hope they do, playing their asses off against world class teams, maybe even to extra time! Not only that but we have 3 points on them AND a game in hand!

If thats not looking good then tell me what is?!

Every time i watch Cuellar play his pass selection is poor, when you have players like barry and Petrov in front of you just give it to them and let them do their job, instead of giving it away which happened alot in the stoke game.
When team's come to villa park to put 10 players behind the ball why not try Heskey and carew up top?

As for untouchables Brad Friedel must be in there, he's the difference between last season and the current season, when it's backs against the wall who would you rather have Carson or Friedel?

2pac - Not a wind up, serious question. Do you think all these players coming back will instantly hit top form, or be any where near the levels they were before injury?

We have Bouma coming back after a long long absence, a dislocated and broken ankle. I would love to think he will walk back into the starting 11 and be as good as he was for us last season, but i'm guessing this will take time. The same will go for Laursen when he returns in 3 weeks (with luck!)

I wouldn't get carried away about any huge input these players will have on your side in the coming weeks. It's perfectly plausible that playing them would actually detract from what you currently have.

I really don't care what Arsenal do, they where always going to beat West Brom. what does it mean that they did? It mean that they are still 3 points behind us and have played a game more. Thats what counts.

I've said before that Villa need to concentrate on our own games and forget about anything else. If we can get through the next 5 games relatively unhurt and get 7 points we'll be in a great position.

And for all those whi are saying we have blown it because we have lost 1 in 15 league games then I suggest you get a life. The only thing that counts is where we end up after 38 games and i for one believe that we will finish top 4!

Lets all get behind Villa and not sulk like little girls when it doesn't always go our way (which it won't, but thats life).

UTV, 3-1 victory tonight!

It sucks to see people at Villa Park booing and reading so much crap on the net and such. We are having a terrific season and the one thing that is for sure is that our team will go out and give 110% every match.

Thanks to Martin we seem to have a team full of players with real heart and soul. We may be guilty of having too small a squad or at times not enough quality or experience, but you cannot deny the spirit and drive of the team. We are a team in every sense of the word, and everyone plays (Often out of position) for the team. It is something that we have grown accustomed to, but there are times where we should just stop and get some perspective to where we are and where we have come from.

The remarkable qualities that our team has shown throughout this season is something we should not take for granted. Because not many fans can say that about their team. utv
