Young, Wright Phillips, Baros and Bellamy

Tuesday, 09 January 07, 05:03 AM · Comments (11)

At about 10pm last night I put on disc one, season seven of the West Wing. Six hours later I went to bed and I've now been up for just over an hour so maybe, I've got this all wrong but it reads like it could be an interesting week.

A lot has been written about Ashley Young as of late and according to one of the papers this morning we've had a bid of £6.9mn. for the winger turned down.

I like the idea that even the papers are calling him a winger and to be honest that's all I need to know. If he's good enough for Martin O'Neill and he's a winger and worth tabling an offer of £6.9mn. then let's go for him. The thing is Watford are saying it has to be £9mn.

Now, I'm all for splashing the cash but £9mn. for a player about to get relegated and with one good half season in the Premiership? Hell, it's not my cash; go forward and spend Mr Lerner. You'll certainly make a few friends doing it and you'll be indirectly making your intentions clear, one way or the other.

Other players linked today are Shaun Wright Phillips and Craig Bellamy. I'd like to see Bellamy at Villa but I seriously can not see Liverpool letting him go unless they know about a potential jail term that they're not telling anyone.

The player however might want out simply because he's not getting games and he clearly deserves it from the way he has played when given a chance.

Shaun Wright Phillips is also linked. While I think he's got potential and if Mr Lerner is going to splash the cash, then great, but what has he actually done? Sure he had a good season at Manchester City but we've had players have good seasons and then nothing.

Chelsea would have paid £20mn. for me last season if they thought Manchester United were after me; the high transfer fee and the fact Chelsea wasted money on the player doesn't, for me, warrant all this hype.

Still, like I said, it's not my money but I just have a sneaky feeling he won't score goals like his father and probably won't create that many either. Although I hear he's quite quick, just like another player we have who is slightly off the boil.

Last rumour of the day. Baros is off to Spain. Fell asleep before I got to the end of that one.

Given the choice between Young and Wright-Phillips, I'd take Young. Wright-Phillips didn't impress me at Villa Park last week at all, and Ashley Young has a reputation as a striker and goalscorer as well as a winger. Also, I'm not that keen on Big 4 clubs using O'Neill as a nursery coach for their younger players, and SW-P is known to fancy his future at Chelsea so long as he can get games under his belt

If the rumours are true 9 mil for bellamy he is an overated player who has a high opinion of himself. Personally i would like to see the money go to a proflic striker as this is what villa need as we cant buy a goal at the moment.

I think Young is a must. As for SWP - Like most players if you don't get regular 1st team chances then it will affect your game/confidence. This is why I think we didn't see the real SWP when we played them recently.

Get them both in & Robbie Keane

Up the Villa

What about a keeper? Sorenson is not world class anymore, and out back up isn't worth fielding. Thanks for coming Kiraly but you can sod off back down south again now thanks. I hear Kahn is thinking hanging up his boots in 2 years, that sounds like a Villa player to me!

Is the West Wing any good?
We are at the stage where clubs will stick a couple of million on what a buying club is willing to offer for a player, they know Martin O'Neill has a sizeable wad of cash to spend, so they want to screw what they can out of him.
Is Ashley Young worth more than what's been offered? I think it's a lot of money at £9m for an untried player, however good he looks, and he looks very good, if O'Neill thinks so, he'll pay it.
SWP has never had a chance at Chelsea, they're killing him there, a new start at Villa would work wonders for the bloke, well worth whatever they want for him.

ashley young, s w phillips (loan) craig bellamy. Id take all 3. At the end of the day if we dont get anyone it could be a long hard struggle.
Id like to see a left winger, a playmaker and a big centre forward like Yakubu. Also robbie keane. Anyone for Beckham lol?
