Falcao is new Benfica target

SL Benfica are reportedly planning to raid River Plate for striker Radamel Falcao.

The Colombian striker is widely regarded as one of South America's hottest prospects and his performances for River Plate have not gone unnoticed in the old continent.

Benfica are now allegedly prepared to step up their interest in the player, who had been previously linked with a move to the likes of FC Porto and Arsenal, according to sports daily Record.

Falcao, 22, has emerged as Benfica's main alternative to Luis García in case the Eagles fail to land the Espanyol striker.

The Portuguese paper understands that Benfica Sporting Director, Rui Costa, will fly to Argentina to secure the services of Falcao if talks with Espanyol do not advance in the next few hours.

Benfica do not want to meet Espanyol's €12 million asking price and could sign the Colombia international for a fee in the region of €5 million.

Benfica today ran away with a 1-0 victory of dutch side, Feyernoord. After starting pre-season with shaky results Benfica now looked like the near finished product Quique has been talking about. The first half was mainly all Benfica but at times they lacked that socring edge and clinical finishing in front of goal. Some very good performances in teh first half came from the likes of Amorim, Aimar, Luisao, Léo, Yebda and Martins.

Second half was a little calmer and both teams looked like they were looking for more possesion thatn goals, but when it mattered most Benfica went on the attack with Léo beating his man and sliding the ball to Aimar who instinctively played a first time ball ahead of Cardozo who smashed the ball into the back of the net to give Benfica the lead and the eventual win.

40,000 expected at Benfica presentation game against Feyernoord

Aimar, Reyes e companhia terão cerca de 40 mil adeptos prontos a ver, esta noite, os reforços das águias em acção. As novas caras do Benfica vão apresentar-se, pela primeira vez, ao Estádio da Luz, num palco que servirá também como estreia a Quique Flores no banco.

O adversário, já se sabe, é o Feyenoord, quinto classificado do campeonato holandês e nas bancadas vai pedir-se a segunda vitória da equipa encarnada desde que começou a pré-temporada.

O clube tem vendidos 50 mil ingressos, mas os responsáveis não prevêem que a afluência seja superior aos 40 mil, até porque, em altura de férias, muitos dos detentores de bilhetes de época poderão faltar à chamada.

As portas do estádio vão abrir às 19.15 e meia hora depois inicia-se o espectáculo, com o jogo a ter início marcado para as 20.45.

cinco estreias. Se estiver reservada alguma surpresa de última hora para os adeptos, essa não deverá passar pelo onze escolhido por Quique Flores, para este jogo com a turma de Roterdão.

O técnico deverá apostar em cinco reforços para a equipa inicial, sendo que três deles (Carlos Martins, Yebda e Urreta) estão no meio-campo, um sector onde apenas Katsouranis é um “velho” conhecido.

Na defesa, os adeptos vão ver o jovem Sidnei ao lado de Luisão, mas as maiores expectativas, para já, recaem sobre o ataque a actuação do novo 10 da Luz: Pablo Aimar vai jogar como segundo ponta-de-lança, com as últimas despesas ofensivas a serem feitas por Oscar Cardozo.
