Our Spurs Squad 2008/2009

Thursday, 21 August 08, 09:36 AM

I've returned, to give my opinions on all things Tottenham.

Things were different in my day, but I'll do my best to keep up with the new generation of "heroes" that currently wear the Lilywhite of Tottenham.

I'll start with an appraisal of our current First Team.

Bear with me, I like to rate my players openly, honestly and base all judgements on their performances for Tottenham Hotspur, not Gallic Gallopers FC.

Goalkeepers

1. Gomes - Not seen much from Mr Gomes, but what I have seen I like. Plays with a Child-like enthusiasm, involves the fans, and isn't a "stay at home" keeper.

21. Sanchez - I haven't seen this fellow play, so I really can't comment, but at his age, coming to Spurs as a back-up keeper, at least he brings experience and professionalism.

Defenders

2. Hutton - Oh I like Alan Hutton, I like Scots would you believe! He is a solid, strong defender that is slight in appearance but behemoth in spirit. Great attacking prowess and a bite that will put the wind up many a left-winger.

3. Bale - A skinny, beanpole of a defender, who looks weak and fragile but is anything but. He's had a serious injury, but he's back and will be a very important player for Spurs this year. I'd like him to be scoring at least 5 goals from left-back this season.

11. Gilberto - Oh to have ANOTHER Brazilian at the Lane. It really is just like watching Brazil. I have seen the best and worst of Gilberto, and the jury is most definately out. But like most jury's they will return and I expect a verdict soon. Attacking looks good, defending looks weak, more urgency in our own third needed.

16. Chris Gunter - He's not blessed with natural pace, or un-natural pace for that matter, but he is young and willing to learn the defensive side of the game which is a good sign. Not an attacker, but a strong guy who can close a game up if we are under pressure.

20. Dawson - Early promise has been tempered by recent bad performances. Ability is not a problem, a settled defensive partner is needed here and once this is done he will again blossom into the player I know he can be.

26. King - A Rolls-Royce of a player, with all the reliability traits of the aforementioned motor vehicle. I'm no longer connected with the club so I can't comment on the injury status of King, but I will say that a fit Ledley King is as good as any defender who has ever played the game of football.

32. Assou-Ekotto -  A slight figure, full of running and heart, positionally not the best, but a great one-on-one defender. With guidance from senior players he could become a very good player.

39. Woodgate - My kind of player, he'll put his head where lesser men wouldn't put their feet. Solid, dependable and would have been an England captain without his injury problems in the past. He's getting back to his best and is the rock of this Tottenham team.

Midfielders

4. Zokora - Not the most talented player at Spurs, but probably the most enthusiastic, which makes him a priceless possession. When the chips are down, he will rally the troops and pick them up. Fans take to him as he is the embodiment of themselves on the pitch. versatile and willing to play any position in order to get on the teamsheet and pull on the shirt of Tottenham. Would like to see him score 3-5 goals this season. If I were a betting man, I'd have a shilling on that.

5. Bentley - Talent, passion and unbridled joy for the game. A real smooth operator who can deliver pin point set-pieces and crosses. Speaks of nothing but football and wanting to improve. This he will do and I'll be looking for him to score 8-10 goals at least this season.

6. Huddlestone - A true Man-Mountain, not blessed with pace, but when people have to detour round you I guess you don't need it. Passing of the very highest order and strikes the ball with a finesse not seen for many a year at Tottenham. Needs to be more aggressive in the tackle and use his raw power to bully players a bit more. Will be scoring in the range of 5-10 goals.

7. Lennon -  Has improved greatly, finalball was lacking, but now has added that to his game, pace in abundance but lacks confidence in his shooting. Should be scoring 5-10 goals a season easily, but a conservative 3-5 is all I see him getting unless he truly believes in hmself and takes shots on more often.

8. Jenas - A box-to-box dynamo, never stops running, doesn't score enough, but helps the back 4 out by slowing attacks and pushing attackers out wide. A most underrated and maligned player to the untrained eye. But off the ball work is second to none. 10 goals is a must for him.

14. Modric - A real conundrum of a player, small and slight and yet knocks off players twice his size off the ball. Holds off challenges beautifully and has balance and body control that can only be described as balletic. Passing is direct and sharp, not a goalscorer but a goal maker, as such, I'll set Modric a target of 3 goals and 20 assists.

24. O'Hara - Spurs through and through, he may have arrived from that lot from down the road, but even the swan was once an ugly duckling. Effort and desire will never be lacking here, a sweet left foot which is among the best in the top division. May struggle to get time on the pitch, as such, I set Jamie a target of 5 goals this term.

17. Giovani - Again I'm not one for watching too much football outside of England, so I haven't seen many competitive games involving Giovani, but he seems to be a direct dribbler with the ability to change direction and pace instantly leaving defenders in his wake. A first season teenager shouldn't have pressure heaped on him, but I believe he is ready to take on the burden of hitting a target of no fewer than 10 assists and 8 goals.

Striker

10. Bent - Technically the best finisher at Tottenham, pace, power and aerial ability are his main strengths, not a great player with the ball at his feet, but an instinctive finisher with an eye for goal. 15 goals at the very least.

This is my honest assessment of the squad as it stands today. This doesn't include reserve players or players that do not seem to be proudof wearing the shirt of Tottenham, as such, I don't class the current No.9 worthy to be placed among these peers until such a time that he feels he should recommit himself to our club.

I apologise for being long winded, in future, the Bill-Nick-O-Meter will purely rate player performances on a game-by-game basis.

Thank you for reading, and Come On You Spurs!
