Luis Figo has announced he will hang up his boots after tomorrow’s match with Atalanta. “It will be my last day as a football player.” The Portuguese legend had been considering another experience in Qatar, but confirmed he has reached the end of the road.
“Dear Inter friends, May 31 2009 will be my last day as a football player,” he wrote on the official Nerazzurri website. “Together with my friends from Sporting Lisbon, Barcelona, Real Madrid and the Portuguese national team, I want to thank all of you. “The Nerazzurri tifosi have shown me affection from my first day in Milan. I am very happy that my last Sunday as a player will be, for me and everyone at Inter, a day of celebration for a fourth consecutive Scudetto.”
The 36-year-old has had a long and glittering career that included the 2000 Ballon d’Or and 2001 FIFA World Player of the Year awards. He joined Inter in the summer of 2005 and already reconsidered his decision to retire last season. “Football gave me a great deal, but above all the chance to know some marvellous people who will remain friends forever. “Among that group are President Massimo Moratti and those I came to know in the Inter squad. They will have a special place along with you, dear fans. “Having never had a problem with a single one of my teammates is the greatest trophy of my career. To all Interisti I send a sincere embrace and the conviction Inter will continue to win even more trophies.” It is not clear what Figo will do now that he is retiring from the playing field, but there are reports he has been offered a job as a director at Inter.
