Copa America

Thursday, 05 July 07, 09:12 PM · Comments(5)

copa america logoIt’s funny, but one of the biggest sports events in the continent is going almost unnoticed here in the US. The 2007 Copa America in Venezuela is on it’s way. It is the American soccer championship for national teams. By the way, the US  also participated in the tournament, but was kicked out. I root for Argentina. If you are even just a little bit of a soccer fan, you can catch the games on Goltv. Argentina is favorite to win, especially after the Brazilian team didn't show much on the first round.

All the games are on the spanish stations Univision, Galavision, Telefutura, Telemundo, and TvAzteca. GolTV and ESPN were showing the U.S. games, I'm sure thats over.

And then you wonder why the MLS and soccer in general does not have the popularity it does in other countries. Brazil, Argentina, Italy, France, Germany can afford to leave a few of their best
players home and still make an impact at a tournament. The US needs every single starter to even have a chance to survive. An American reporter stated that the US was not worried about the Copa
America because they accomplished their goal which was to win the Gold Cup. Are you serious? What kind of accomplishment is that, to win a tournamet with countries who have never won a world cup and
almost never qualify for it. I will give them credit for beating Mexico! But in my eyes I would think that making an impact in the Copa America would be more beneficial to the team and the US fans as
a goal. Maybe they should invite Argentina and Brazil on the next Gold Cup to make it worth while......

It was said that in Chicago newspapers on the weekend of the Gold Cup final (played in Chicago) there were almost no news at all about the match so how do you figure that there will be coverage of a
tournament down in SA? I had a discussion with a few americans a few months ago where I stated that no one in the US cared for soccer; that not even 1% of the population cared and they responded
"That's a harsh statement" but I don't think I'm wrong. Now we're talking about Mens National Team here..Women is a different story...
