Tim Cahill boosted Everton’s European challenge with a second-half winner.
Joleon Lescott had a header cleared off the line and Stephen Pienaar smashed a shot against the post before Phil Neville’s drive was deflected wide.
Cahill broke the deadlock, following up after Ross Turnbull parried his header , and Phil Jagielka and Tim Howard denied Afonso Alves and Mido an equaliser for the home team
