Chelsea go 1-0 down but then storm back 4-1 they suffered a scare at Roots Hall before their dominance paid dividends.
They looked suspect from set-pieces and home skipper Adam Barrett rose to nod the Shrimpers ahead from an outswinging Junior Stanislas corner.
Michael Ballack then pounced on a poor clearance to rifle home before Salomon Kalou slotted in Nicolas Anelka curled a fine finish and Frank Lampard made it emphatic
