John Carew's strike gave Villa a deserved draw in the first leg of their Uefa Cup last 32 clash with CSKA.

The visitors took the lead when Vagner Love played a neat one-two with Yuri Zhirkov before powering through and slotting into the bottom corner (14).

The hosts battled back and Craig Gardner hit the bar moments before pulling the ball back for Carew to rifle past Igor Akinfeev

Zenit St Petersburg 2 Stuttgart 1 Uefa Cup Highlights

Zenit got a good home win tonight playing Stuttgart as they won the game 2-1 Szabolcs Huszti gave the defending champion an early lead when he scored from a rebound just two minutes into the game. But Mario Gomez picked up a loose ball in the midfield and moved down the right flank to score an equalizer from the edge of the box in the 15th minute.

Zenit struggled before Timoshchuk fired the winner from just outside the box in first-half stoppage time but dominated after the interval only to waste numerous scoring opportunities on a grassless frozen pitch at the Petrovskiy stadium.

It was Zenit’s first competitive match since losing to Real Madrid 3-0 in the Champions League on Dec. 10

Ten-man Aston Villa blew the chance to top Uefa Cup Group F as they lost to Martin Jol’s classy Hamburg side.
Mladen Petric gave Hamburg the lead before Dennis Aogo crossed for Ivan Olic to net a diving header and the latter then countered quickly to score again .

Nathan Delfouneso got one back but Steve Sidwell was sent off for a second bookable offence a minute later.

Game ended yesterday 1-2 final score.Terrific win for Zilina, one for their fans to remember for years to come, and with results elsewhere having helped both sides it seems that everyone will leave happy after a great night’s entertainment.

Villa, who qualified due to Hamburg’s win at Slavia Prague, were quickly two down when Vladmir Leitner’s cross crept in at the far post (7) before Peter Styvar finished off a fine move (18).

Nathan Delfouneso’s volley got Villa back in it (27) before Leitner saw red for Zilina after a second booking (79).
