Pompey started there new start without old manager tony adams with a good win at fratton park.
City were restricted to efforts from distance, and Elano should have done better with his 20-yard shot after being picked out in plenty of space on the edge of the box only to blaze a few yards
over the crossbar.
Given had already saved a low Johnson effort seven minutes into the second half before Nugent fluffed another fine chance wide of the far post when he had been set loose by Nico Kranjcar’s exquisite pass.
Then, with 20 minutes to play, Johnson finally broke the deadlock. The England full-back, watched from the stands by Fabio Capello’s right-hand man, Stuart Pearce, scrapped his way down the right wing before cutting inside and drilling the ball towards Given’s near post.
The brilliant Ireland keeper got down well to beat the shot away but it was Johnson, following up his initial effort, who collected the rebound and despatched it coolly into the top corner.
And five minutes later Pompey were two up. Pennant won and took a corner on the right, with Logan failing to challenge the leaping Hreidarsson, who powered his header into the top corner

Villa clung on for victory after £3.5m signing Emile Heskey’s debut goal. Martin O’Neill’s now side into third place with a 1-0 win at Portsmouth. The former Liverpool and Birmingham striker raced on to Gabriel Agbobnlahor’s flick and emphatically volleyed past David James for his first goal in Villa colours.
While the hosts might have felt aggrieved to be behind, by the end of the half Villa had had several chances to extend their lead.
Heskey demonstrated his immense strength, holding the ball up beautifully before laying it into the path of James Milner, who might have done better from 10 yards out.
Agbonlahor missed the best chance of the half when he raced on to a long ball to find himself in acres of space and one-on-one with James.
Pompey debutant Hayden Mullins twice went close in the first half and Peter Crouch scooped a close-range effort over, while Nadir Belhadj got a foolish second booking for dissent.
Villa are now two points ahead of fourth Chelsea and only trailing Liverpool on goal difference, although they play Wigan on Wednesday.

William Gallas grabbed the only goal as Arsenal put their recent troubles behind them to claim a scrappy win.
Peter Crouch headed against the post for Pompey while Sylvain Distin’s last- ditch challenge denied Emmanuel Adebayor after he rounded David James.
Mikael Silvestre and Adebayor failed to capitalise on James errors but Gallas made no mistake after beating the keeper to Denilson’s free-kick.
