The Clericus Cup trophy
This morning at 11am, on the artificial grass pitch of St. Peter's oratory in Rome, the new season for religious footballers has started. Mater Ecclesiae defeated the priests of the Gregoriana 6-0. The young seminarians won at the end of the match, due to their better physical conditions. The
Clericus Cup has a very simple format: sixteen teams in two groups, just one leg for seven games, then playoffs and the final at the Marmi Stadium that will determine the winning team.
Players are native of various countries, French, Croatians, Brazilians and even a player from New Guinea. Of course the initiative is blessed by the Vatican, and it's also promoted by
Csi (Centro Sportivo Italiano), an amateur association. There's a sponsor, INA Assitalia (insurance) and the games will be broadcast by Sat2000, a satellite TV of the Catholic church. Matches will be of 60 minutes, and at the end in case of a draw, there will be a penalty shootout: the team that wins the sootout will have 2 points, the other team has just one.
The media interest on the Clericus Cup is great, but there won't be people playing football in cassock. Just people that like playing football and think that football and religion are compatible. A very hard challenge in this violence period.
