Friday, 12 January 07, 04:00 AM · Comments (2)

Today the IFFHS, the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, release the 2006 Top 18 of the best National teams coaches Selected editorial staffs and experts from 91 countries voted the Italian coach Marcello Lippi (former Napoli, Juventus and Inter Milan coach), with a big gap between him and the second in ranking, French Raymond Domenech.

Here is complete ranking, in brackets the team they lead:

1. M. Lippi (Italy) 298 pts.
2. R. Domenech (France) 132
3. J. Klinsmann (Germany) 123
4. F. Scolari (Portugal) 84
5. G. Hiddink (Australia) 47
6. J.N. Pekerman (Argentina) 28
7. J. Kuhn (Switzerland) 22
8. O. Blokhin (Ukraine) 20
9. R. Dujković (Ghana) 19
C. A. Parreira (Brasil) 19
11. H. Michel (Ivory Coast) 15
12. L. F. Suárez (Ecuador) 12
13. M. van Basten Nederland 9
14. K. Brückner (Czech Rep.) 7
15. S.G. Eriksson (England) 6
H. Shehata (Egypt) 6
17. L. Aragonés (Spain) 5
L. Beenhakker (Trin. & Tobago) 5

Marcello Lippi comes after Carlos Alberto Parreira, winner of 2005, and Otto Rehhagel (German coach that led Greece to a surprising European Title) who got the prize in 2004. The 58 y.o. coach born in Viareggio also won the "World's Best Coach Club" award -always from IFFHS- in 1996 and 1998. The prize is really deserved by Lippi, as he led the "Azzurri" -honestly, a strong team without a top star- to win the World Cup, proving to be one of the best in strategy and to able to isolate his players from the rest of the World in a delicate period, after calciopoli and a couple of friendly match before the beginning of the World Cup that didn't satisfy Italian fans and journalists. In 2005, Lippi ranked fourth.

As you can see, top four coaches ranked in the same order as their teams after World Cup (Raymond Domenech, who lead France to second place in Berlin, is a newcomer). Only one coach in the Top 18 (the Egyptian Hassan Shehata) didn't take part to World Cup, but he won African Cup with his National Team.
The 18 coaches comes from 14 different nations, as we have three Dutch (Hiddink, Beennaker and Van Vasten), two French (Domenech and Michel), two Brazilian (Scolari and Parrerira). Newcomers are, other than already mentioned Domenech, Serbian coach of Ghana, Radomir Djukovic, and Guus Hiddink.

Lippi is a great coach, but I think Scolari is equal if not better than him.

I would have really liked to see him get that England job, because his personality would really have upset the media and seen some big surprises.

Scolari didn't call Quaresma to the WC...i think this was a wrong choice...
